The line between enthusiasm for guns and an unhealthy obsession

Only 5 guns? That's like saying "I'll never need a 500 hp Shelby Mustang" not only is it un-American, it's downright suspect. ;)

Then again I've taken MORE than 15 handguns to a range and right now this very moment have more ammunition than I need... but if the zombies/werewolves/un troops/mutant biker hoardes come... I won't be reaching for a set of Arnie Palmer signature irons.

Yeah he might be a little goobery, but he's not harming anyone. Let him have his hobby. Now, if those 15 handguns were all Hi-Points... then I'd question his sanity. :neener:

I think I saw that van!

I've had "those guys" spot me 50-100 rounds of Portugese .308 when my Indian surplus was misfiring 1 in every 8, so I don't make fun anymore. I also appreciate carrying a lot of ammo to the range... Target shooting is fun. :)

In my brief time training, I've noticed that a lot of NYC people I'm teaching find themselves having so much fun shooting that they just don't want to stop, and that's really pricey with .357 magnum or .45 ACP ammo, but not nearly so much with .223. Pretty much anyone I take target shooting once or twice can't find a reason in their heart of hearts why little old respectable them shouldn't be allowed to have so much fun whenever they want, and are more than willing to sit through a painless training course and get fingerprinted for a CCW. So they jump through the hoops, and they come to love their new hobby. It's apparently frightfully exotic and interesting for a respectable New Yorker to have ever even held a real firearm nowadays. Many are desperately eager to learn how one ought to handle them, despite the fact that they can't at home.

Unless he starts talking about getting a mohawk haircut and taking out a senator, just file him under "kinda weird but generally harmless."

So you're not on board with free speech? Oops, I see you are a moderator. Nevermind. :D

Many with few hobbies may seem a bit over board about there favorite . How else could we get the likes of Tiger Woods, or Arnold Palmer, Joe Montana and Warren moon , these guy's are, were Obsessed with being the best . I don't see a obsession with firearms being any different, avid hunters and fishermen are under simular scutiny from PITA
There is a reason America is the greatist Country in the World, for now

sometimes i think i am obsessed

firearms happen to be my favorite hobby. here at my appt. i have 6 hand guns and a shotgun. i've mostly traded bought and sold to acquire my collection. i have more guns at my home in ponchatoula. sometimes i think i am obsessed, because i enjoy it so much. i feel safer with my guns, i talk about firearms proliferation and the right to bear arms. i need some rifles now though, i'm thinking about maybe an ak, or something in 308.... i'm doing it again damnit!

Hrrrmph...dude, if your family acquaintance-guy wants to burn the extra gas to haul all that ammo to the range and haul the unfired rounds back, it's his call. Personally, I've never had occasion to burn more than 1000 rds in one day - and that at a high-round-count tactical rifle class - but I'm not gonna cast the first stone.

Honestly, as long as he's still keeping a roof over his family's head, putting beans on the table, and keeping his kids(if any) in schoolbooks and clothes - without going into debt or overextending his credit to finance his guns 'n ammo - then you have EXACTLY NOTHING to say about what he chooses to do with his money, time, or possessions(TO INCLUDE guns, ammo, gear, or whatever).

In fact, you probably ought to think HARD about getting, and STAYING, on this guy's good side - not just because of all the cool stuff he has, but because you want to be one of the people he spares if/when he finally snaps and goes postal, as you seem to be implicitly worried about.

You've become brainwashed by the media...

"Arsenal
Just the thought of him driving around in a van with this kind of arsenal kind of makes you think.

Arsenal? No way. Plenty of guys have four times the firepower, and they rarely shoot. He happens to like shooting.

"Makes you think? Sure! Makes me think I had the time, resources, and friendly range space to spend a few hours.

Just come out and say it.

What exactly is your problem, instead of asking "our opinion"?

When we went to the range he brought about 10,000 rounds of ammunition, 15 handguns, 3 Ak's, and wore a tactical military vest even though he has been out of the service for a decade.

He has lots of guns. He must be a maniac. If I were you I'd report him to the FBI. And the next time you talk to him, be sure to say hello to 'ol George Bush for me. He's sure to be listening in if you report a gun toting, van driving, cammo wearing, "gun crime" waiting to happen maniac.

The last time I read about a maniac shooting up a place he brought three guns. The only three guns he owned. Wait... didn't you say you owned five??? What is your name again? Where do you live? You must be a maniac too.

"He's sure to be listening in if you report a gun toting, van driving, cammo wearing, "gun crime" waiting to happen maniac."

He already knows about Dick Cheney.:neener:

It's just guns, not crime

So that sounds like this fella's only hobby, I admire the dedication. Me, I'm all over the board, but they overlap nicely.

I have a front room full of camping/hiking and snowboard gear. I have a tricked out jeep in the garage, and a few handguns and rifles. These all mesh with the outdoor lifestyle nicely. Each time I start a new hobby I get quite a fervor for it, spend more than I should, then have some nice toys to entertain me until something else tickles my fancy.

Guns are on the hotlist right now for I am enjoying shooting, reloading and particularly like the 10mm round. It's all good, sounds like your friends a little more zealous than most, but no more harmful than your average weekend plinker, maybe just into it a tad bit more.

I guess you can classify me as in between. I live in CA, and i think about guns a lot. When going to the range, i usually take my .40 USP, my M1 Derringer, my .357 magnum revolver, my AR-15, my SIG P229, and my SKS. I usually bring and use about 500 rounds, but i dont dress in the army thing. I like some FPS video games, but not all.

The only reason i like guns so much is, 1) I like outdoor sports like hunting and paintball. 2) It gives me a sense of security. In no way have i EVER even THOUGHT about harming anyone with a gun or any other weapon, no matter how much i hated them. Guns are strictly for defense and sports ONLY in my opinion.

In a way, im sort of obsessed, but not to the point of unhealthyness.

Can someone, pray tell, explain to me how one legally acquires sufficient monetary units to be capable of acquiring and using on a frequent basis, those levels of ammo? The problem has been nagging at me for a while.

GREETINGS,

MY FAMILY WAS VERY WEALTHY IN DIAMOND MINE PRODUCTION IN MODOGOLAND, BUT THE ARRIVING OF THE BRUTAL MILITARY DICTATORSHIP CAUSED MY FAMILY TO SECURE OUR FORTUNE IN THE MODOGOLAND NATIONAL BANK AND FLEE TO AMERICA. IF, BY GOD'S GRACE, YOU CAN ASSIST OUR TROUBLED FAMILY BY ACCEPTING TRANSFER OF $25,000,000 TO YOUR PERSONAL BANK, WE WILL GLADLY REIMBURSE YOU 15% FOR THIS TRANSFER. PLEASE PROVIDE YOUR BANK ACCOUNT NUMBER, ROUTING NUMBER, PIN NUMBER, DATE OF BIRTH, AND SOCIAL SECURITY MOST SOONEST. YOUR HUMBLE SERVANT, -MV

That aside, what does a solid pallet (3 cubic feet or so?) or .22LR cost? I know for sure that we have members on THR who buy .22 by the pallet.

Incidentally I also have a van. A 1977 Dodge that I bought for a camping vehicle. It is ideal for a mobile hunting cabin, a weekend getaway, a massive grocery getter and a vehicle to haul my motorcycle when I need to.

Never have understood the worry about someone with "a lot of guns."

So he's got a gajillion guns. Big deal. He's still only got two hands.

Makes you think what? Why shouldn't I worry about a guy like you with 5 guns? :scrutiny: You could do a lot of damage with just one really.

I guess I don't understand what quantity has to do with it. I brew beer. My brewery has alot of equipment. I have at least 30 gallons in my basement right now, and thats low. Does that mean I'm going to sell beer to children, or start driving drunk because I have a lot of it?

Something becomes a problem when it effects your life in a negative way. This could be food, drink, watching tv, sex, compulsive spending, etc. If he's got the cash to back his hobby I don't see why you need to "think" anything about it.

What concernes me is a family aquantince. When we went to the range he brought about 10,000 rounds of ammunition, 15 handguns, 3 Ak's,

Wow! That's about 555 round per gun. Seems to me, he could use few more guns to share the workload. BTW I know who have that many guns but rarely shoot them. Now that's something to be concerned about.:D

Personally I have 5 firearms. I shoot only about once a month, and I don't intend to buy any more guns in the near future.

What is your opinion?

My opinion is that you're a hobbyist, and your family acquaintence is a gun nut.

He probably can't understand your lack of interest, and is bemoaning it on another board as we speak.
