Happy Birthday to the club

Went to the range last night, for the first time after a trigger job.
Trigger got set at about 2.7 lbs. I also installed a Nikko Stirling scope.

Left card, shot sitting on a chair, rifle suppoted by a harris bipod at 25 metres, just for sighting in, scope set at 7x magnification.
In this circumstances you can see your heartbeat, cool.

3 shots of the card, then closer and closer. The two "10" shots were ok.
That means that the Marlin (not I, sadly) is now somewhere between 1.5 and 1 MOA with remington golden bullet high velocity ammo. Subsonic "match" ammo should get it below 1 MOA.

Right card shot offhand at 25 metres with magnification set to 4x.

factory hammer extention for a 1978 39A

Have been told that that hammer design changed in 1983.
How can I tell what the correct hammer extention is for a 1978?

Marlin 60 SS won't extract shells

I am new here so I would appreciate any help. I have a new marlin 60 SS and it won't extract spent shells. A shell mis fired in it and I think damaged the extraction device, but, I have searched and searched on the web to find a new one to buy with no luck. Any ideas?

Peep Sight for 39A

I am going to buy a Lyman Peep Sight Model 66MC for my 1978 39A
I understand that the sight will fit into the previously drilled and tapped holes in the receiver.
Will I have to change the front sight?

Help to make a Stainless 39A a reality

There has been discussion on several forums about Marlin producing a 39A in stainless. I am starting this thread with the hope we can convince Marlin to produce this gun. It has been said that letters convinced Marlin to but the bulls-eye back so maybe this will work. I plan to post this thread on Marlin Owners, Marlin Collectors, Rimfire Central and both High Roads. Please feel free to post it anywhere you think it may do some good. If you think of other places please post it. I will post sample letters that can be used as guidelines. Others can post their own letters to share ideas. We will also need names, addresses and e-mail accounts of people to send the letters to. I have never found an e-mail address for Marlin, anyone have one? Davidson’s is the first distributor that comes to mind, anyone know any others? The sales representivies are another group we need. If you are, a Gun Shop owner may be you can help here.

My thought is we start by asking for the normal 39A that is produced today only in stainless. I know the dislike of the cross bolt safety and rebound hammer comes up in this discussion. I believe we must accept them as they have been in production for over 20 years. Trying to incorporate that change will decrease our chances significantly. The same holds true for a shorter barrel. I do not know why Marlin no longer produces a Mountie length 39. Marlin must have a reason. If we only approach one change to the gun (the material used in production), we stand a better chance of success. When we accomplish this then we can start our next project a 20” barrel. Cost has also been discussed it seems everything we buy costs more than it should. I would think the cost difference would be similar to the difference in price between the stainless and regular center fire guns. When a person thinks about it, a gun takes about the same amount of machining and materials no matter if it is a rim fire or center fire.

Dear Sir

I am writing this letter as a Marlin owner and fan in the hope you will produce a 39A in stainless. I believe the success you have had with your stainless center fire levers would show public acceptance for stainless levers and that we are ready for a stainless 39A. I am sure you have someone monitoring different forums on the internet and have seen some of the talk of a stainless 39A. Please forward it this letter to the proper person capable of making this important decision. Thank you for taking the time to consider my suggestion.

Sincerely;

Dear Sir

I am writing this letter as a Marlin owner and fan in the hope you will help convince Marlin to produce a 39A in stainless. In the past, you have had success in bringing several unique variations of popular guns from different manufacturers to the market. I believe the success Marlin has had with their stainless center fire levers would show public acceptance for stainless levers and that we are ready for a stainless 39A. I am sure you have someone monitoring different forums on the internet and have seen some of the talk of a stainless 39A. Please forward it this letter to the proper person capable of helping bring this dream to a reality. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely;

i recently acquired a marlin 39 rifle with an octagon barrel not sure what kind of shape its in but i called the marlin company and they say it was made around 1924 or 1925, they didnt know because the records from that time period were lost in a fire. if i had to guess id say 70-80% over all. i paid $650 and was wondering if that was a good deal.

Not sure what the going rate is for such a rifle. RimfireCentral has some enthusiasts that appear to be collectors, and they probably could provide you with at least a good ballpark figure.

You could also maybe check some of the auction sites to get an idea - although the pricing may be "off" depending on a number of factors, provided you even find one around that old for sale.

If the rifle really is that old, then I wouldn't recommend shooting anything faster than standard velocity out of it. Or at least check around to make sure it's safe to do so first.

Congrats on your new rifle...

@flusher
Sounds about right.
I had my first weapon ( savage 24V- 22/410-this was in the 1950's )
My brother had his bottle & my weapon & went in the woods. When he came back he did
not know where he was or what he was doing--also--he did not have my weapon.
I raised so much hell that he gave me his Marlin 39A--he was not happy.
I have taken very good care of it .

All the info I can find says P is 1957. Lists on rimfirecentral in Marlin section and Brophy's book. There are some differences in the mid fifties on the lists.

Lever Play

My 39a seems to have a bit of side to side play in the lever.

How much side to side movement should I expect?

Im in

Hey Everyone, I dont have a 39 but one of my favorite rifles to shoot is a Marlin 3030, I swear I am a better shot with that thing than a AR, I am actively looking for a 39 so if anyone sees a good deal or has one for sale let me know. I am in SE VA. I have seen the new ones at Bass Pro for $499 but I dont want to spend that kind of money on a .22, I dont want a POS either, just a decent shooter to take to the woods. I am a big fan of the micro grooves so the older ones are out. I didnt read all 108 pages but from what I did read it sounds like the newer ones have some FTF FTE issues so I dont think I want a new one either.

Just to put things clear, after the first experience, I now tighen the take down screw very thight and since then no more FTE and just a couple of FTF (those were ALL because I forgot about the safety:fire:)

so not to worry to much about the new one's IMHO.

I just got one of these rifles; made in 1985, and I paid a pretty penny for it. I had people telling me at the gun show, here in Austin, that I couldn't have made a better choice for a first firearm.

Just wanted to show it off...

I'm going to the range with my pops tomorrow... so excited!

Combo Rico, nice find. I think you'll be pleased.

I bet there are a good many members here who's first firearm was a Model 39. Learn to shoot it well and there is a good chance you'll have it the rest of your life.

Combo, you will not be disapointed you did. Mine is 3 years old new and started off hand competition a year ago and is my first and only rifle. I have found the accuracy is me!

MO, I have my 50 foot Silhouette indoor paper sheet back from last Monday and still in the trunk. I will get around to taking a picture sooner or later. Anxious to head outdoors late April.

Just picked up an absolutely mint 39A made in 1978.
Not one mark on it.Still had the Marlin sticker on the front wood. Bought a Lyman 66MC peep sight now in transit.
Out to the range next week.
Still want the correct FACTORY hammer extention and an original manual for that year.
