Greetings all and it may be early but here's a Merry Christmas to you all:)
For CCW here in AZ I have been carrying a Walther PPK/S as my primary. I know that many feel the .380 is minimal, myself included, but it's the smallest handgun that I own. I own several Smith's and Colts all of which are too large for concealed carry.
I find the safety on the PPK/S very unfriendly when bringing into service in a hurry. Not natural to disengage as is a 1911. I sold two 1911's to buy wheel guns as I am primarily a revolver guy. I have read a lot about people likeing their S&W 642's but I think the 5 shot limitation is kind of scary.
I am NOT of the spray and pray school, but I have been shot at by people robbing my residence several years ago and found that "fine motor skills" vanished pretty quickly during reaction time. I was unarmed at the time.
Before this rambling loses context I would like to ask,
1. Does anyone carry a Walther with the safety off?
2. I am seriously considering a Glock 19 for CCW because 15 rounds of 9mm trumps 7 of .380 any day and the G19 is not that much larger than the Walther.
Whatyya think?
Any input appreciated.
Thanks!

G26?

I carry either a G27 or an M&P340 Smith with Crimson Trace.

If you want 9mm, I suggest you look at the G26 for carry. The magazines are all interchangeable, so if you want 15+ you can have it, and they make a sleeve to extend the grip so it feels like a full size gun. I have a 15rd. .40 magazine for when it's at home, and a 9rd. or 11rd. for carrying.

Just a thought. Of course if you wanted to stay with a wheel gun, the M&P CT is nice! Or so I hope - just bought it 6 hours ago, haven't shot it...:D

I've never had laser sights, but I'm hoping it will help with that whole fine motor skill departure issue, should the need arise...

Best of luck!

Glock 19 and Glock 23 are two of the very, very, very finest carry guns you can consider. I have a bunch of great guns I could carry and my Glock 23 carrying 14 rounds of 180 gr. Gold Dots is what I rely on the most. I agree with you, these days, the better capacity you have before a reload, the BETTER! Go with a 19 or a 23 and you'll be very well set. Around the house, my G23 holds a 15-round mag, giving me a 16 round capacity of hot forty before a reload... I like that a LOT.

Carry the Walther with the safety off, it is a Da/Sa.
Just use the lever as a decocker.
Later,
Doug

1. Does anyone carry a Walther with the safety off?
Not really...Like Doug mentioned, completely safe...Just remember which way is UP...
I have a feeling this was a set-up for a Glock promo.....:)

I'd bet most folks who carry a PPK/S chamber a round, decock it, then flip the decocker/safety back up (OFF) for DA carry. Because the DA trigger pull is so heavy, it's safer to carry with the safety off than most revolvers.

I have both a PPK/S and a G19. Thickness is the most critical dimension for concealability and comfort when carrying, and the G19 is significantly thicker than the PPK/S. I'd bet most people can carry a PPK/S IWB using their normal belt and pants. To carry the G19 IWB I definitely need pants and belt that are one size bigger than normal - or else carry OWB.

I'd re-think the revolver option. We've all heard the statistics showing that a civilian is more likely to be killed by a wolverine than to need more than 5 shots in a self-defense situation.

That's what I do with my PPK.

i have a bersa .380 (similar).

when it's in a holster, on my hip, the safety is off. i do like the safety on it b/c it's an easy flip forward even when it is engaged. (i guess this drives 1911 drivers CRAZY b/c it's almost the exact opposite of the 1911)

it's a pretty heavy DA trigger so i don't have any concerns about it. holster has complete trigger coverage, too.

Glock 26 with Glock 19 magazines using an A&G Grip Adapter! I use the 10 rounder for concealment and the G19 magazine for everything else (including at least one reload).

Faulty thinking. With that mindset, statistics show that you will never need to shoot anyone in defense of your life, so why have a gun at all?

Let's face it... you could very easily empty a low capacity auto in a hot hurry and still not have STOPPED an assailant. Add another assailant or two and you're totally screwed. RELOAD? Yeah, right... decent chance you'd never even get the chance to do that. This is not to discount the importance of training, which I think it critically important, no matter what the capacity of your carry gun.

I think it makes a huge amount of sense to carry a gun with as much capacity as you can reasonably carry. Glock 19 (16 rounds on tap) or Glock 23 (14 rounds on tap) for me.

I am always looking for a new gun to carry. The last one I got amonth ago is a Kahr CW9. A truely great gun. About the size of my Bersa 380 but it uses 9mm. In fact it loves P+ ammo.

Arghh! Just when I was getting comfortable with the thought of my new SP101 as a carry gun, you've filled me with doubt. Oh well, I still have the PO1 and G19.

Nope. Not a setup for a Glock promo.:D
Like I said, I'm a revolver guy. I bought the Walther years ago and it is very reliable. I've only fired one Glock and that was a 19 that my buddy let me try out. It felt pretty good and I think with some practice I could feel right at home with it for CCW.
I like the HK's but they are way too pricey. Glock is affordable and since I am a pragmatic kinda guy it seems to make the most sense.
For anything other than CCW, I'll take a Smith or Colt revolver any day.
Thanks to all for the input. Going to the SAR show (small arms review) this weekend. We'll see what follows me home.:)

When i do carry my ppk/s i carry it with safety off . If your wanting something similar sized take a look at the Kahr p, cw , or k models ( the cw is the economy model but does not lack much from the others ) as well as the kel-tec pf9 or p11.

Check out the CZ RAMI. Comes in 9mm or .40 S&W

my current carry piece is a HK P2000 - you might also look at the Kel-tec line if you want something very small that wont break your budget - iv carried a keltec 9mm for about 4 years now as a back up gun(sometimes its even used for primary when i can't carry something bigger) - it has never given me any trouble and cost less then $250

It's going to be hard to beat a good .38 snubbie. They are very quick out of the leather/foolproof and with the proper ammo a good fight stopper. Not as good as a .45, but I can't carry a .45 everywhere.

Check out the new Walther PPS 9mm (police Pistol Slim) 6-7 or 8 round single stack mags. avaiable. close to PPK size. They are starting to arrive at dealers now. YANKEE2500

Ccw'er

IMHO I'd go w/ a G26..... Superior concealability and goes bang every time... all for less than 500$

The Glock 19,or 23 if you prefer .40,makes plenty of sense.I think the argument for more capacity these days is very valid and the 19 fits the bill.
I'm fortunate to live in a low crime area, that is low"crime against persons".
Burglaries are a frequent occurance as is theft from auto break ins, etc. Attacks against persons here is extremely rare.I often carry a 1911,and sometimes a 2 1/2 in. Mod 19 S&W,and even a single stack 9mm.
More often than not tho,I'll be found with a Glock 19. I have no trouble transitioning from one to the other but the argument for one gun,and familiarity is also valid. You won't go wrong with a G19 and good loads. It will accomplish the mission.
