Fair Winds, Following Seas

As of Saturday, 5 November I'll be retiring from the Navy with 30 years of service. The ceremony will be on the flight deck of the USS Midway (our longest serving aircraft carrier, and now the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum). Flags, color guard, Navy Ceremonial Band, lots of friends & fellow service members.

The 4 brothers in my family all served in different branches of the armed forces. We have always joked that if we had a 5th brother, he would have served in the Coast Guard. All of us strong patriots and committed to freedom.

Thanks to all my fellow veterans, now and in the past.

Had to sign up for the draft in '79 or '80 because of the Iran hostage crisis. But I was never drafted. I had a good job at the time and did't want to quit for voluntary service but a lot of my friends did. I would have gladly went. That's the closest I came.

Nine years and a week at the moment, but still going.

97E3P in the 1st Cav (going on seven years at my first permanent duty assignment now  ). When it was disbanded, I was the second-longest continously serving soldier in the 312th MI Bn (another guy from my Arabic class had been there two months longer because he had a shorter AIT). Did OIF in 2004-05 and will be headed back next year. I also did three rotations to Kuwait before OIF and a tour in Bosnia back in '99. I'm now in the 1st Cav's Greywolf Brigade.

Well, I'll bite.
I'm currently waiting to go off to basic for the army reserve. When I've done that, I start training as a combat engineer. I was sold when I read they get to make things go boom.

Volunteered out of high school in 1968-USAF. Preferred a bunk to a hole in the ground or rolling on a ship.
