General George S. Patton also carried a very nice SAA, if I'm not mistaken. It was always shined up and pretty. Guess he never used it that much. A man with a clean BBQ gun probably doesn't know squat about real combat arms. He only thought the Garand was so great because it made that neat "ping" sound when you were out of ammo, and he enjoyed that. Simple mind, perhaps?
General Patton killed two of Pancho Via's top lieutenants, with that very same Colt SAA, in a standup fight, while taking a 7mm Mauser round through one arm from the carbine of one of those he killed. This was when he served under Black Jack Patton, and led possibly the first motorized calvary patrol into Vias command center using 1910 Dodge touring cars. His men were armed with 03 Springfields and he used that rifle himself during that campaign.

Patton didn't care much for the 1911 because one had gone off in Black Jack's holster once when Black Jack stamped his foot while cussing someone out.
Patton also carried an S&W .357 Magnum, as did Herman Goering for that matter. Though Goering was a jerk he was also a proven combat ace and earned his wings the hard way.

These old Warhorses were anything but clueless. They had shed blood and seen their own blood spilled on the ground.

Yeah what Roswell said :neener: I do feel kinda sorry for the clueless Deer Hunter :( He could easily recant what he had posted about the good General Patton and disspell any thoughts about being out to lunch but it appears the lights are on and noooooo body is home :uhoh:

Those two lieutenants were payed off to take a bullet. It was all for the media. Worked well for Patton's image. Patton was also just trying to emulate Herman Goering, when carrying the .357. Also, Patton trusted the 1911, but didn't like that it had a magazine capacity of 7. He saw 7 as an unlucky number (pretty backwards, huh?), so he stuck with his six shooters.

And then Deer woke up and realized it was only the medication for this rare form of retardation that was causing him to halucinate.

Yesit'sloaded, you made a compelling case for including the M-N on the list of 20th century combat rifles due to its long and important service life. I believe it should have made the cut instead of the M-14. Here is my top 10 list:

1. AK/AKM
2. M-16
3. SMLE
4. Garand
5. Gewehr 98 Mauser
6. FN FAL
7. Steyr AUG
8. MP-44 (STG-44)
9. 1886 Lebel
10. Mosin-Nagant

Only the first four entries reflect my order of preference.

Hmm, friend of yours? I mean, you must have known the man to know that he has no combat arms experience, right? You must have been there and watched him fumble about with a rifle to know how he handled himself. Oh you werent there? Hmm, sounds like you don't know what you're babling about to me there bill.

Your posts would suggest that you have some sort of degree in history; what are your credentials? The internet? You were a mall security guy and you read the internet after you took leave (got fired)?? You boldly attack Patton for keeping his guns clean.... ? Seeing a picture and reading wikipedia doesn't mean you know a man. IMO General Patton had gravel in his guts. More than you do, anyhow.

Do you read what youre typing before you click the post button? What is this word that you claim is yours, Truth you say? What is truth, can you define it? Your opinion has no bearing on the truth. Some of these threads are sickening, I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. YOU SOUND LIKE HILARY'S CAMPAIGN MANAGER. WHY DO YOU POST YOUR OPINION AS FACT AND POINT YOUR NOSE IN THE AIR AND SAY "NUH UH" WHEN YOU ARE REFUTED??????

K got that off my chest. But seriously, you sound like a bleeding heart liberal, you really do. Besmirching a general because you saw a picture of him, claiming the Garand was a detrement to the war, seriously. Seriously seriously think about what you posted.... sounds a lot like an opinion as opposed to a generally supported fact. Fact being something that can be proved, for example: the M1 Garand fired 30-06 cartridges. That is truth. Your version of truth: The M1 Garand led to spray and pray tactics. Now, where did you learn this, did someone else post this on some other website?? While it may sound convincing, this is infact and opinion. Wether or not you think it is truth is up to you, the reality is a fact(sometimes synonymous with truth) is that it is one mans opinion that was passed on through the ages until it was planted here under the guise of truth.

This is not the first time I've seen a thread turn from "This gun or that" into "what I think is true and what you think is bull pucky" and gone on and on and on and on. Am I a part of the problem? Maybe, but probably not.

In closing: Deer Hunter, you really should put "I think" in front of every line you type, it would make a lot more sense. Don't spout your idea's with your liberal mind set and expect us to believe you.

Why should I put "I think" in front of any unbiased, unabridged, and uncited, research work? For clarity? Why, that's almost as insane a postulation as analyzing such a work of facetiousness and going through all the trouble to write a scathing rebuttal!

Yeah! What Travis said!:neener: I thought I was being harsh but when I read your post my LCD monitor started to overheat. After all you know how those alien abductions can affect your mind and all. I think it's the deep probing that messes up your ability to recognize the rediculousness of the things you say and post online. Deer Hunter doesn't need ridicule .... he needs a nice big hug :D Oh, and as my Dad would say, who just happened to serve in Patton's 3rd army, as he would say Deer Hunter needs a swift kick in the A--!
Of course purly for medical purposes to snap him out of the funk he's in.

Deer Hunter, I've been trying to keep it light but in all seriousness the things you posted are indefensable and without merit. What's more is everybody who reads this post already knows that. You obviously don't have the hutsbah to recant or at least quit posting on this particular thread. If you really believe those things that is a sad statment on your behalf. Just give it up you are in a no win situation. Just politely let it go on by.
Travis, question? Did not Patton have an Olympic Gold Metal for I believe the biathalon which included shooting? But I'm sure Deer Hunter will tells us through painstaking research he has learned it was not really a gold metal but rather just a Hershey's Kiss with gold colored foil over it and a big red, white and blue ribbon from 7-11 and that is was not for shooting his gun but rather for cleaning and polishing his rubber band gun. Ain't that right Deer, or something close to that? Bannana Head:p

Actually General Patton placed fifth in the modern pentathlon at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. The biography on the George S. Patton website makes no mention of a wound suffered in Mexico. He was wounded in the leg in WWI whilst in command of a tank battle. I have no doubt that he was a very brave man, a great warrior and a real leader of men. There is no need to exaggerate his accomplishments or his personal valor. The factual record is plenty.

Can't tell you much about the Olympic honors he won if any. He was a crack pistol shot and used a 32 Long target pistol in some competitions and won some sort of Swordmanship competition at the St Cyr Academy for Calvary officers. He may have won the pistol competition at St Cyr.

The way I read it he was wounded in the left arm or wrist during the Mexico gunfight. The two Via Lieutenants were trying to cut out the back gate and Patton stood in the middle of the path and shot both off their horses. One winged him with a Mauser carbine.

He was also wounded when he and his driver were caught in a German night attack during WW1. They manned a listening post whose crew had been killed and called in artillery fire to break up the attack. I think his driver was killed.

Now this is from the site you mentioned.
In 1912 he represented the United States at the Stockholm Olympics in the first Modern Pentathlon. Originally open only to military officers, it was considered a rigorous test of the skills a soldier should possess. Twenty-six year old Patton did remarkably well in the multi-event sport, consisting of pistol shooting from 25 meters, sword fencing, a 300 meter free style swim, 800 meters horse back riding and a 4-kilometer cross country run. He placed fifth overall, despite a disappointing development in the shooting portion. While most chose .22 revolvers, Patton felt the event's military roots garnered a more appropriate weapon, the .38. During the competition Patton was docked for missing the target, though he contended the lost bullet had simply passed through a large opening created by previous rounds from the .38, which left considerably larger holes.

After the Olympics, Patton kept busy taking lessons at the French cavalry School and studying French sword drills. In the summer of 1913, Patton received orders to report to the commandant of the Mounted Service School in Fort Riley, Kansas, where he became the school's first Master of the Sword. He designed and taught a course in swordsmanship while he was a student at the school.

Patton's first real exposure to battle occurred when he served as a member of legendary General John J. Pershing's staff during the expedition to Mexico. In 1915, Patton was sent to Fort Bliss along the Mexican border where he led routine cavalry patrols. A year later, he accompanied Pershing as an aide on his expedition against Francisco "Pancho" Villa into Mexico. Patton gained recognition from the press for his attacks on several of Villa's men.

The information there is rather sparse. It says he used a .38 rather than a .22. The article I'd read used practically the same words except it said he chose a .32 Long, Possibly a misprint.
It gives no details of his "attacks on several of Via's men". Could be the official site chose not to use details from possibly sensational newspaper articles that may have supplied the details in the article I read.
As it says he was St Cyr's "First Master of the Sword", no mean feat in a land where swordsmanship was still a major part of a young man's education..

No, Lencac. I will not let a such a small thing as "facts" and "humility" stop me from speaking what I know is true. That Olympic pentathlon was horribly understaffed, with few actual "atheletes". In fact, many countries forgot about the Olympic games that year. They found out a few days before, and in an act of panic, they sent their best sprinters they had to run the pentathlon. As you could see, their atheletes were greatly mismatched. If they returned to their country without a metal, they were sure to be beheaded (as was the custom in "those countries" at that time. I'm sure you know which). They tried with all their might, but most died from heart attacks or blood clots (their training regiment involved ingesting 4 egg yolks at each meal) in various places, mainly their legs. The ones that paced themselves brought in the first four places. The last place was saved for Patton, since all the others had already passed on to that great Pantathlon in the sky.

But folks, we digress. This thread is about the Top Ten Combat Rifles of All TIme. My list would be the following.

1. Mosin Nagant. Superior in its simplicity. Plus I once shot a deer with it and dropped it in its tracks.

2. Springfield 1903. An amazing rifle, only second because I have never handled one because I have a Mosin to take care of that niche in my collection. A true weapon in the hands of our skilled soldiers. Forget about the 1917, the 1903 is where it's AT.

3. Spencer Carbine. The first assault rifle, obviously more superior than anything ever implimented on the battielfield thus-far.

5. AK-47. Bury it in the sand, leave it for 23 years, get it out, piss down the barrel, spit on the reciever, shake it out, load it and you're ready to show those Infadels what for!

6. FN FAL. What the M14 WISHES it could be.

7. HK 416. It is so obviously amazingly better than the M16, or any other piston-driven gas operated semi-automatic rifle out there today. It's got HK on the side! That's all you need to know.

8. Mini 14. Simply because such a reputation of innaccuracy deserves some applause.

9. Garand. First semi-auto en masse (supposably....), blah blah blah. Oooo, makes a "PING!" sound. Patton loved it, but that's not saying much.

10. M16. Aweful. Jam-o-matic. If a few grits of sand, mud, dirt, water, polluted air, gets into the action it'll jam up. 8 locking lugs? Is that really needed Mr. Stoner? It also craps where it eats, and that just sounds nasty. Sure, you can shoot the wings off of a fruit-fly at 1000 meters, when it actually goes BANG, that is.

Deer Hunter just as I suspected .... you are of course off on a different planet. But I challenge you to produce evidence of what you say. If you remember you were the one that digressed. All I did was mention a quote from the General and off you went, degrading, besmirching trying to impress an already very knowledgeable group of folks with a bunch of off the wall comments that you so far have yet to show proof of. So go ahead moron .... impress us :neener: I dare you .... I double dare you :p

Patton was pidgeon-toed?

Fine, Lencac. If you want to be closed-minded, that's fine. I'll be going now from this discussion. I'll be off doing much more important things, like watching re-runs of the A-team.

That's what I thought ........ just bail out like a big scared sissy :neener: When challenged you fold like a deck of cards. You refuse to provide ANY proof of what you say ..... why? Because you can't! So go watch the A-team in your little "deer hunter" world. You can say whatever you like about me. Be as mean as you want .... I DON"T CARE! But when you try to tear down a man whom is a LEGITIMATE American hero, who had no other agenda but to server his country and lead brave men into battle, that is where you step over the line. So go load another bong and go watch deer hunter's version of reality TV  YOU ARE PATHETIC !!!

P.S. I am closed minded. An open mind is one that has no filters and will allow anything to pass through.

I think yall are jumping when Deer Hunter tells you to. I would give the Mosin at least 5th place on the list. Has anyone ever had a malfunction with one when it was properly cleaned of cosmoline when taken out of storage. It is honestly too simple to screw up, which was the whole idea with soviet weapons. Broken firing pin? Nope. Double feed? Never. Safety not work? Impossible.

Hey guys Deer Hunter was obviously not serious , but he failed to take into account that making light of someone of Patton's statue and proven courage and ability is a much more serious faux pax than an equal poke at some political figure.

BTW
I think the article I got my Patton information from was in a Shooting Times from the late 60's, it might still be in my stacks of old magazines.

Deer Hunter, I am LOL:) Too funny!

OK- how in the world did the Styer AUG get in with "combat" rifles. Has it ever been used in a shooting war?

Has it ever been used in a shooting war?
Only if you count the Nakatomi building. :p
Seriously, the Aussies have their variant of the thing, and I'm pretty sure they've seen action in Iraq and similar places since it's inception.

horsesoldier .... not any more ........ this thread should have been done long ago .... but what the heck.
