Just stating my opinion, after all it's a free country...because of the Garand.
;) Watch a documentry of a garand being fired in combat vs any other rifle of that era. Patton was right. In my opinion, the Garand was clearly superior to any other rifle in the fight. A platoon of GI's against a similar force with the Mauser or Ariska. Ask any WW2 vet. Ever hear of Audie Murphy?
But then I am American. I prefer American over say, nazi or communist.

I agree with d2wing. The M1 was far superior to any battle rifle during its time. The enfield was probably the closest in firepower durings its time if we are talking about battle rifles.

and yet the Enfield outlasted the M1 in military service, not only in it's own country but with other militaries...even contributing to the only defeat of the Russian army since WWII

:D

That's why once in a while is good to look at the gear itself and forget where it came from. :D

You could miss out on potentially better technology (that you can afford) and get some of your people killed.

Food for thought....The M256 gun on Abrams tank is made by the same company that made 30mm cannons to shoot down B-17's and the dreaded 75mm and 88mm tank guns that drilled so many of our tanks and airplanes.

...the German 88mm is widely considered the finest artillery piece

...the Russians made the best heavy tank, the JS II and the best medium tank, the T 34/75 (superceding the German Panther V)

Yes! Yes! Say more things like that!! I just took a gamble that AR's will be available for at least a while during the B.O. administration and ordered a Garand from CMP instead. There's good arguments for both, but I like to hear the Garand side validated more since I just put my money on it. :)

Shhh don't tell anyone I have a Mercedes parked by my house and a Beretta
in the gun safe.;)

I think the m1 should be #1.. It seems to be what a lot of other battle rifles are measured to. People on this forum compare new battle rifles to it in power and yards down range. Also its the first production semi auto rifle issued to everyone. Its probably why the ak was invented.

I think a very good case can be made for the Garand being #1, although personally I would choose the AK. The M1 was far, far better than any of it's general issue contemporaries and it was a superb rifle as well. It also was widely used in the greatest conflict ever and undoubtedly it's superiority must have made a difference in the outcome of some of the battles fought. Imagine the advantage a semi-auto would have over a bolt action for clearing buildings.

might you mean the M1a?...the semi-auto version of the M-14, which was a "product improved" Garrand

Its probably why the ak was invented.

the AK was the resault of the Soviet army's encounter with the MP43/Stg44...a true assault rifle chambered for an "intermediate" cartiridge and capable of effective full auto fire (something you can't say about america's solution)
