This afternoon, I had my first interaction with law enforcement since applying for my CHP. Nebraska is a must notify state and the CHP database, while unavailable to the general public, is cross indexed with the DMV for motor vehicle stops.

Yeah, I did kind of roll through that stop sign. Since I have do not actually have my license as of yet, I did not say anything. He came back to my truck and gave me a warning ticket. I thanked him, and then told him that I had applied for my permit but it has not yet arrived.

He said that I showed up on the database, and that I should be getting it in the next couple of days. He also said that he was very pro gun and that we permit holders as a group were very law abiding.

Maybe my CHP has just worked in my favor, tipping a moving violation into a warning. I thanked him once again and went on back to work.

I've had 3 similar incidences in the past year. Can't keep my foot off the floorboard. All 3 times they knew about my CWL before they got to my window. First question seems to be "Do you have any loaded weapons with you today?" So far 3 out of 3 were yes. No hassles just a soft warning and a request to drive slower. All 3 did ask me what I was carrying and odly enough they all asked why I was carrying. Just told them it was for my own protection and they just said okay.
Once in Idaho, once in Washington & once in Montana. They never issued tickets to me either.
Stay calm and follow the rules and it'll go well most all of the time.

Friend gearchecker,

I am sure that, had I been in my Jeep, the officer would have asked me when he first approached. I was driving my company truck, so I did not show up as the owner.

An added note to this story: about fifteen minutes ago, my wife called and said my CHP came in the mail today.

Here in NC we have a duty to notify the officer, as well.

I've been stopped or forced to interact several times and I've never had a negative experience or been asked to surrender my weapon for the duration of the stop.

It typically goes:

I turn on the interior light and put both hands in plain view on the wheel. I think that right there has gotten me out of a few tickets. LEO's look to your hands for signs of aggression, and if they are in plain view they feel safer.

As soon as the officer stops talking after initially walking up...I state "I have a concealed handgun permit and I am carrying" before I answer whatever question he may have asked.

Is it loaded?

Yes.

Where is it?

Holstered on my right hip.

And that's usually the end of any firearm related talk. Maybe I've been fortunate, but I've yet to run into an LEO who was bent on disarming me or harassing me for carrying. So far they were all either pro-gun, or paid it little attention.

Hey, buddy, slow down. That's one of the 'rules,' as well. They've kindly reminded you of it three times in the last year. What aren't you getting here? :)

Yeah 3 warnings for speeding in the last year. Heh heh

You have been lucky my friend. It's used up now, so best slow down.

Am I one of the only people who doesn't get pulled over? Seriously, I've pretty much only used motorcycles for a couple years ago, recently upgrading to a Ducati, and I STILL haven't been pulled aside for a chat with Johnny Lawman. Maybe I'm just incredibly luck?

I've had my conceal carry for a few months now. Haven't been stopped by a LEO yet. I'm sure that statement just ended my lucky spree. Oh well.

My previous interactions with LEO's is I always get a ticket...so I'm sure I'll end up being disarmed. I'm always respectful though. Just unlucky.

I feel bad for the LEO that does pull me over though. My car is registered to my dad (still getting my learning on...it never ends), so he'll be a little surprised when I tell him.

xcgates,
If your Ducati is like mine was, the speedo reads so optimistically high, that you probably aren't speeding after all! When mine read 80, the actual speed was 72. Of course, Ducatis being what they are, your speedo could be dead-on accurate, who knows?

Isn't that what those radar things on the side of the road that show your speed are for? To see if your speed matches the radar? :D

xcgates, your not alone. I haven't been pulled over in 20 years and I drive alot, but some of that just has to be luck because I'm not perfect. I just keep it mellow and don't do stupid stuff.

On the HWY I just always make sure someone is going faster than me. :)

True, I don't really look at my speed a lot, but go by the other traffic. really should check it with my gps, that is as soon as I button her back up from checking the valves.

(That must be why I don't get speeding tickets, my vehicles spend more time apart than running!)

Iff'n I'm on my gray sport tourer, I'm apparently under the radar.
Iff'n I'm on my ZX-6R (and if it's a Kawasaki, it just HAS to be lime green! :D), I can't make it outta the neighborhood without picking up an escort to the city limits!

Good LEO Experience

I have not been pulled over but I did get behind a drunk driver one night coming home. I called 911 and followed the driver for 20 miles before LEO caught up to him. He wanted to get my information in case they needed me to testify against the driver. The first thing I did was show the officer my CCP and tell him I had a gun on my right hip. His response was "Thanks for telling me but I am not worried about that." I was very pleased at his attitude.
