UNDERWOOD Shipping Mistake?

Doesn't look like a big deal at all to me, OP. You received one box of 9mm with the Extreme Defender bullet instead of the .380 hollow point that you ordered, and it looks like the price for the one you received is actually higher than what you ordered. I'm sure it's an easy mistake for the order-picker to make, grabbing a box of the wrong stuff, perhaps previously tossed back into the wrong bin by another employee. I'd be thrilled if Underwood offered to send me a free box of ammo and let me keep the wrong one, but I would not EXPECT it, and I don't think Underwood is obligated to do so. Therefore, Underwood's proposed options seem fair to me. I'd definitely do what you did and let it go because it would not be worth the trouble to switch them out.

I've never gotten the wrong ammo, but anytime I have received the wrong product, or extra, the company always wants it back.

I don't see the harm either, I didn't pay for it and they cover shipping, so I'm only out the inconvenience of dropping off the package. Maybe I would have an issue if the nearest shipping place was way out of the way, but that's not my case.

I'm not sure how I want to take this???
I placed an order for 13 boxes of ammo from Underwood last week to take advantage of a sale and get some defense loads that I needed. I also ordered over $200 to get free shipping.

I was looking over my order and discovered a mistake. I had ordered 3 boxes of 380acp 90 grain hollow points but only received 2. I had also received a box of 9mm 90 grain Xtreme Penetrator that I didn't order. The rest of the order was correct.
I thought that I should let Underwood know that they made a mistake. I called them and while talking to the Customer Service Representative (I use that term loosely) she said that she would send me a box of 380 that they shorted me, but If I wanted to keep the 90 grain 9mms she would have to charge me for them. Or she could send me a mailing label to return them. I told them to forget it, and just keep the 9mms instead of what I ordered.
Now I take the time to call them about their mistake. Then they want to charge me for the product that I didn't order or take more of my time to ship it back????

I have ordered from Underwood in the past. And will probably do so in the future. This just left a bad taste... where is customer service and keeping customers happy????

How do you like the 255gr +p 45 Auto ammo??

I was under the impression that ammo was not returnable -- or it was such a risk to accept returns that no one would do it...

For example, food isn't returnable. When my credit card once was compromised, I received a large order of expensive gourmet coffee that the dirtbag ordered but was shipped to the credit card billing address rather than the thief's address. I contacted the company to return it, and they told me it was not returnable, and to enjoy it.

When I buy something, I expect to get what I paid for, nothing more, nothing less.

I'm not surprised that someone might make a mistake. But I don't expect to get something for nothing. I just want them to make it right.

Sounds like that's what they were trying to do.

If someone wants to give me something for free out of the goodness of his heart, I won't turn it down. But I don't expect it.

I'm surprised they would ask for the box back. How much does it cost to ship 1 box of ammo? How much does it cost for them to make 1 box of ammo? I'm guessing their cost to make a box is less than the cost to ship 1 box.

I do like the 255gr +p 45acp hardcast loads. I have seen the coating chip a little from being loaded into the chamber from the magazine several times.
I like all of the loads that I have purchased and tried so far from Underwood.
I ordered 45acp +p 230 hp, 380acp 90 hp, 9mm 124 hp to try in the order I received Monday.
I will say that the 38 special +p 158gr hardcast is an impressive load. In the snub nosed J frame the velocity is down to about 1100 fps compared to 1250 advertised.
But that is still 424# of energy from a revolver that weights less than a pound.

Nice! I wonder how the 255gr hard cast coated bullets would do in a suppressor?? Cause that would be great suppressed for more oomph on targets.
P. S. 158gr at 1100 is still better than a 147gr 9mm!

I don't know Underwood's motivation, but if it were me I would want to first make sure OP was being truthful and an extra box of ammo was sent.

With the box in hand you could check for lot/age of the ammo, and make sure it wasn't counterfeit or old ammo trying to be passed off.

Then you could look at how the mistake was made. Probably a packaging mistake, but maybe the box was loaded with .380, or went through the .380 flow/production area incorrectly.

So ideally they use it to improve QC in some way, and then they could always disassemble the components (bullet/brass) and sell them to offset the loss.

The CSR asked for the item number which I gave her.

So...you want them to send you the box of ammo you paid for but didn't receive, but don't want to send them back (at their expense) the box of ammo you received but didn't pay for? And then going on an internet forum to complain that the company didn't give you free stuff and apologize profusely?

Welcome to 2023 entitlement mentality...or "1st World problems".

underwood ammo is a premium product. Jacking around over one box of ammo is stupid. If buy something I expect to get what I paid for. He didn’t get what he paid for. He shouldn’t have to worry about dickering around with packaging and shipping a box of ammo back to them. Any smart company would eat the few dollars and make the customer happy.

Yes, and with the box in hand they can confirm the number and product inside.

The thought wasn't meant as an attack on you OP. I don't doubt what you've said here, but there is no shortage of scammers out there, so Underwood would be wise to confirm things.

I didn't take it as an attack.

I did mention that I have made many purchases in the past. And we reviewed the order together.

One thing that is just wrong about the request to return the product.

A friend just ordered 2 boxes of ammo from Midway USA. And he screwed up. Ordered 300WM instead of 300wsm.
I don't know of a company or retailer that will accept ammo for a return. Midway won't, Wal-Mart won't, Cabela's/Bass Pro won't.

Seems like the liability with the return is higher than asking a customer if they can use the product they sent by mistake.

I just got my second order from them. 7 or 8 different rounds, all of them I got the right stuff.

I'm starting to think that maybe caliber coverage is a bad idea and I should consolidate everything into 9s...

They could be asking for it back for liability reasons.

Probably a blanket company policy to insure no customer has ammo they didn't intend on ordering. In this case perhaps not a big deal, but in some cases incorrectly sending ammo could potentially be dangerous to fire in the wrong gun. And in our litigious society, firing say an overloaded .45 Colt that damaged or blew up an old Colt SAA would likely bring a lawsuit, even if the customer wasn't charged for it. "I didn't know, I didn't even order it"!

OP, send it back. Ask for a call tag if it's too much trouble to take it to a UPS drop off.

What's the big deal... slap the shipping label on the box and put it in the mail.

Seems like many who sing the blues when a good vendor or gun shop goes belly up, are quick to add to their demise by smearing their name online for an simple mistake, or demanding that the vendor lose money on the transaction, even when they've offered reasonable accommodation.

I'd really like to see all the sea lawyers and belly achers run a business and experience first hand how extremely difficult it is to float the boat.
