I had got a new job! I absolutely need this job and and that's the reason I am working until 12-1am. Naturally, it's in the restaurant business and they forbid conceal carry on your person or in your car. I live perhaps 3 blocks from the restaurant, and of couse, my piston rod in my car broke. This is not the roughest part of town, but it is on the out skirts of a rough neighborhood

So....

I am walking home at 1am, I have concerns with this. Since I need this job I won't carry a weapon (pepper spray for sure) but I am thinking what should I do? What would you do. Just last night a man was shot riding his bike for no apparent reason...

Since I am a cook, I am thinking about some IIA bodyarmor... Thoughts?

Doe your workplace have lockers for your personal items? If so, carry the gun to work in a fanny pack or similar and store it locked in the locker. Its not your employers business whats in your bag. Its your safety that's at stake.

Nuh-uh. No dice. Not that you couldn't try it, but I bet they have a clause in something you signed that allows them to check those lockers. (Or, there's a judicial precedent somewhere.)

Do they check the lockers regularly? If not, I don't know about you, but here's how I would think about it.

Chance of gun being found = will loose job.
Chance of being assaulted while unarmed = will loose life.

Which is more important?

If you must walk unarmed, I would recommend that you become very familiar with the routes between your work and home, and to wargame scenarios mentally each night as you walk home. What fences could you jump? where could you run? If you run, are you running into a lonely area where an attacker can assault you unobserved? If you did run, where could you hide? Are you safer in the dark unseen, or in the light where someone else sees you? Where along the route can improvised weapons such as sticks, bottles, etc be quickly obtained? This mental wargaming cuts your reaction time in the event that you face a real threat.

If you are not in good physical shape, you might consider jogging (I won't suggest walking since your car broke down, you probably already do enough of that.) Most importantly, keep your head on a swivel, and be alert.

This sounds like a variation of the "tried by 12 -vs- carried by 6" argument.

If it comes down to it, is this job worth dying for? Anybody else there you can catch a ride with until your car is repaired? :(

I'll agree with 545Days' comments - while you are walking home, keep alert - look around, stand up straight, walk briskly. All those sorts of things will convey to anyone who may be watching you (and judging whether or not you are a worthwhile target) that indeed you are not worth attacking, since you're not oblivious to your surroundings and slouched over like a meek little creature.

Other than that, carry a cell phone and maybe a can of mace. Even if you don't have anyone to talk to, talking on the phone (while still maintaining alertness and strong posture) makes it harder for a bad guy to effect an attack, since you've got a connection to another person who probably knows your location and can summon help.

If you do go with body armor - I'd suggest that you not wear it while you're working - from one kitchen slave to another, you know how hot it gets when you're in the weeds and pushing orders out. Body armor degrades easily when exposed to heat and moisture, so you'd just be lessening the life (and effectiveness) if you were to wear it all night. If it were me, I'd wear it to work, pop into the bathroom and change into my work gear, and stow the vest in a backpack or something. When shift's over, back in the bathroom, put vest back on, and head towards home. That way, you get the most life out of it as possible.

That's a tough one. I agree with 545days but if you really feel you need the gun do what you need unless it can get you in criminal trouble.

Would a decent sized pocket knife be allowed or not noticed? Pepper spray etc.. ?

Even if you have a gun, someone could jump you if you were not paying attention. So paying attention, staying alert, and not acting like an easy mark are the first things to do.

+1

In addition, I wouldn't care about what my employer thinks, however I would make every effort to be unnoticed. Perhaps something tiny like an NAA mini in .22 mag, Seecamp, etc. would do nicely. These wouldn't be my first choice, but they'll sure clear a bg's sinuses.

hmm, you're a cook, get good chef's knife put it in your backpack and rig it for easy access. Good shoe leather will serve you better than bodyarmor in this case.

Also plan alternate routes too and from work, someone might notice your routine...

Walking home-Always be armed!

Howdy!

Being self employed as my wife and I am, we are always armed with at least a Keltec P32, not that that would make a difference to us. I also carry a MAK 9x18 or a 1911, depending on dress and weather.

The P32 is in my pocket all day-every day, and I never notice it's there, as it's so light weight and small dimension.

Do they search your person at work?

Enough people have talked about variations of "Can you carry/have a gun despite it being against policy?" that I won't get into that.

I'll assume that you decide to forgo the gun.

There are other options for defense. The first, and most useful, is being prepared to run. Run like he[ck]. Whenever you walk home, make sure you're wearing shoes that are good for running in. Also make sure that you aren't too weighed down, like with a heavy backpack and pockets full of junk slapping against your legs as you run. Also, be sure to wear a good belt, one that will hold your pants up tight while running. Simple, but important.

There are weapon options, too. It's important, though, not to carry such a variety of weapons (mace, stun gun, cane, knife, kubaton, flashlight, kitchen sink) that you're weighed down when you need to run. Pick one or two things that can be carried securely in your hands or pockets. Make sure whatever you do carry is something you're comfortable using, and if possible, have some training/instruction with.

Leave valuables at home. Don't carry an expensive iPod or something with you. Minimize the amount of cash you carry with you. Consider making up a fake wallet, stuffed with a few single bills, fake credit cards, whatever. Put your real wallet somewhere hidden on your person, and carry the fake wallet where your real wallet normally rides. If you can't run, giving up a few dollars and your fake wallet is better than fighting and maybe getting killed, as long as the mugger doesn't mind leaving a witness/victim alive.

Wear dark clothing. It makes you harder to see at night, and may give you an extra second or two to spot a would-be mugger before he sees you. Also, if you have to hide, dark clothes will help. Similarly, forgo jewelry or anything shiny, or that jingles and makes noise when you walk. Low-profile is your friend.

Above all, stay alert, and watch your six.

Hope this helps.

Edit: As for body armor... you have to weigh pros and cons. It will probably stop anything you're likely to be shot with, as long as they shoot you in the chest. On the down side, it's expensive. Worse, it weighs you down, makes running harder. I'd probably do without the armor, personally, unless you think you're more likely to get shot in the chest than to be able to run away.

Good points by Foxtrot. One thing I will add, and it probably goes without saying, but - if you are forced to fight, FIGHT DIRTY. Kick, scratch, bite, knee in the juevos, all of that. Carrying a knife or kubotan is great, but if all you've got is your bare hands and feet, well, you better get creative, and quick.

It's not fighting dirty it's fighting to win. Do what has to be done by any means necessary. I second a can of mace, good situatuional awareness and a new pair of running shoes.

It's just me, but I would most likely find a way to carry, like a CC jacket with a pocket built in to the lining so it didn't seem like I was carrying because I had nothing to carry with. You wouldn't be wearing it while cooking, and if they actually did search you or your stuff for some reason, you'd have a better chance of them not finding it.

FIGHT DIRTY
You forgot eye gouging and the throat ;).

Weapons are not magical.

Your first line of defense is situational awareness. Don't just look 10 yards up the street - look to see what vehicles are approaching.

Darkness is your friend - if something looks funky, hit the shadows.

I've forgotten about my Kel-Tec P3AT on more than one occasion. Little tiny thing.
