what advantage would a CCW be for me?

Have you actually read through the KY statutes for carry?

A lot of us are really good at looking this kind of stuff up, but I highly recommend going to the source. There's no substitute for this on several levels.

I'd recommend handgunlaw dot us as a start. They have an excellent summary of each state's statutes, and the format is identical on their website regardless of which state you check. So once you get a feel for the layout, you know exactly where to go for similar information elsewhere.

They keep their site up to date and, most importantly, they have links to each state's statutes so you can go straight to the source. DEFINITELY get used to your state's statute pages.

At the end of each page for any given state, they also post the date the page was last updated.

It still sounds safer to have the officer aware ahead of time that you are carrying rather than being a surprise. Not to mention it means you have been vetted already.
I keep my driver license, proof of insurance, copy of registration, and carry permit all in a plastic baggie. If stopped I can just hand the officer the baggie, no fiddling around and no awkward conversation.

i know there are things i would learn in the class that are worth knowing and i would be interested in whatever they teach. so maybe that's enough reason to do it.
There you have it. You can decide whether or not to get the permit later. Everyone should get good training. Doesn't matter if they plan to get a permit or not.

I don't worry a bit about being on some "list." I would be offended if I wasn't
There's probably a list just for folks that go out of their way to avoid being on a list.
Everyone should get good training
You'll get no argument from me there, but the 8 hours required for a CHL permit is hardly scratching the surface. In the scenario I related in a previous post, the permit class likely did more harm than good for the handful of folks with no firearms knowledge.

I very much agree. CCW/CHL/CWP classes are nowhere even remotely close to sufficient training. As long as they're taught by competent people (not all are) they're a good place to start. Stopping there would be like quitting school after 1st grade.

Officers usually request that the license be handed over separately, for their own protection..
If the officer sees the clear plastic baggie and requests that I remove the license and hand it to him or her separately, I would certainly comply.

That said, I can't imagine why they would need protection from two pieces of paper and one plastic card.

For starters, just take the class.

During the questions and answers segment, you can ask about advantages and disadvantages of obtaining your CCW. Too, the class information pertains to your home state.
Taking such classes as this do not commit you to obtaining a permit. This is brain food.

My personal opinion is that you will gather very valuable intel by taking the class. Others in the class will have the same questions on their minds as do you. Life is about learning.
.

That practice has to do with trying to hand them a wallet with the license in it. Refusing to accept the wallet protects them from accusations of either theft or accepting a bribe.
Yeah. Wallet, clip, baggie, envelope....

i live in Kentucky and pretty much never go out of state (or much of anywhere, really). we have "constitutional carry" here, so i don't have to have a permit to carry a concealed firearm. i actually have not, to this point, ever carried concealed but i think about it some and might do it eventually. but my firing range is having the CCW class in a couple of weeks and i have been told that it's well worth taking. the expense ain't much and i'm probably doing nothing that day. i've been told that having the permit makes buying guns easier - but i have no difficulty whatsoever buying guns in this state. i fill out the form, lay down the money and walk out the door with my new gun.

so, other than going to another state, what use is a CCW permit to me? i know there are things i would learn in the class that are worth knowing and i would be interested in whatever they teach. so maybe that's enough reason to do it.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

Don't be a victim. Get a permit and start carrying a concealed handgun all the time - everywhere. Hearing about all these mass shooting in the news, I believe that we need more gun owners carrying with the mindset that they will intervene and stop evil. To do that you must be carrying a handgun and train in its use.

Training is a good thing. You can always learn something new from every training class. Go in with an open mind and learn something new. Do get your permit.

Side note:
Back in May, I gave a Glock 27 equipped with fresh night sights, holster, multiple mags, and decent amount of 40S&W defensive ammo to one of my childhood best friends - Darin, who lives in Florida. He is a father of 4 boys, 3 in college, and the Senior Pastor of a decent size church. Many of his congregation carry in his church. He agreed with me that we need to intervene against EVIL when we see it happening around us.

I previously shipped another similarly equipped more or less matching Glock 27 to his older brother in California. Darin mentioned to me that his neighbor is on the local SWAT Team plus is a firearms trainer for his department. After I returned home to Missouri, Darrin messaged me saying he showed everything to his neighbor who was impressed. Texting him just now, he has shot it but it's still a work in process to get good with it.

I think the main benefit would occur after having to use your firearm. Having a CCW could reduce potential lawsuit targets and there are always lawsuits.

Another benefit is educational. I have heard a load of misinformation about when you can and cannot use a firearm from people who chose not to get a CCW permit when constitutional carry became effective in Texas.

I have had my basic State's CCW license for over twenty years. At first the reason I applied for it was to be able to carry a pistol in my vehicle that was not in plain sight, per law at that time. Then started to physically carry in a job that had me going into some unsavory locations. My state had reciprocity with a few neighboring states, but not a couple I frequented often. My state then came up with several different CCW options, but were expensive at the time.

Fast forward to last fall waiting in line for some black Friday gun deals at a local retailer I kicked up a conversation with the guy in front of me. He was in my states legislator and had rewritten many of my states gun laws. He had successfully introduced a bill to exclude any fees for CCW licenses in this State. I ended up taking the enhanced CCW course from him, and now can legally carry in pretty much any state except the RED states and New Mexico. To have reciprocity for New Mexico, I would have to get my Arizona CCW permit. The Arizona permit just requires to fill out the paper work and fee. Once I get the Arizona permit I will be able to legally carry in more than 40 States.

This statement intrigues me. Do you know the reason?

Just curious, is this because you already have a current permit in your home state? (Asking because I live in AZ and had to take a class and get fingerprinted to get my permit here.)
The paperwork includes fingerprint cards and applicants must "satisfactorily complete a firearms safety training program approved by the department of public
safety pursuant to ARS §13-3112.N". A CCW permit from another state is acceptable, as long as there was a training or testing required for it's issuance.

In Kansas my CC permit allows me to buy guns with no delay. The gun sellers also like it and usually say when I present the card, "Oh, that makes this easy." I fill out the paperwork, pay my cash, and walk out. In addition, I travel a fair amount and always have a gun(s) in my car. I always make sure I'm covered in the states I'm driving thru. Even though we have constitutional carry in Kansas and I don't need the license to carry, I keep and use my CC license whenever ID is required. It is a vetted ID that requires firger printing and law enforcement validation.

One thing that I have not seen in this thread. Here in Commonwealth of Kentucky it is a CCDW permit not as CCW permit. The D in this case means deadly weapons not just handguns. That means if I have a ASP baton, blackjack, large knife and other things that LEO's generally frown upon on me I am good to go at least within the state. I have to remember that when I leave the state

A couple of things that come to mine are it speeds up the process of buying a firearm. You still have to fill out the form but with a CCW you don't have to wait for them to call it in. At least here in Arkansas.

I've also noticed that if meeting LE as in a traffic stop that having one helps the officer to relax. It shows that you have been checked every which way that there is. That and a good attitude have gotten me out of a ticket or two over the years. Knock on Wood!!!
