All hands repel boarders!
Cruise liner fends off pirate attack

(CNN) -- A luxury cruise line will re-evaluate whether to offer future cruises off the coast of Somalia after pirates attempted to attack one of its ships early Saturday.

The modern-day pirates were in two small boats and carrying machine guns and a rocket-propelled grenade when they attempted the attack on Seabourn Cruise Lines' "Spirit" about 5:35 a.m. local time Saturday, Deborah Natansohn, president of the cruise line, told CNNRadio.

good luck finding

a cruise line that will allow passengers to bring their weapons on board.
Anyone know of any?

one or two phalanx systems should do the trick.. or you can cheap out and go for a couple of manual mini guns like Dirk mentioned. A Phalanx system adds a little class to any cruise ship though....

They didn't mention what their 'security' system was but I'd take something bigger than a 7.62 , At least a .50BMG or a 20mm. Modern pirates can be very well armed so you need something that can hit them at a distance.Instead of the shotgun/clay bird sport for passengers they should have a 20mm/pirate boat sport !!

No Joke. RPGs and vessel to vessel exchange of fire aside, the pirates at some point would have to board the ship to do their thing. A couple of hundred armed passengers would create a very bad day for the pirates.

All things considered...

The pirates were in 'inflatables'. A couple holes in one or two sections and the boats would be rather unmanageable.

Something as mundane as an M60 machinegun would do fine. Compared to miniguns and chainguns and 20mm cannon, an M60 would be rather economical. The effective range is about 1100 meters, which would repel most pirates with normal small arms - including that RPG.

Face it, the cruise line wants to keep costs down. Nor do they want it to appear to potential passengers that 'repelling boarders' is a common event. So the defensive weapons need to be - discrete - and the staff to man such weapons would have to be part of the regular crew.

But I'm not real crazy about the 'loud boom simulator' the ship used on this occasion. How long is it going to take for the pirates to figure that out? Today, maybe?

SS Missiles

Harpoons and Exocets have a rather long minimum range. I think that a pair of 76mm OTO Melara Mk 75 cannons and several M2 .50's would serve all pirates well.

If the 76mm's are too expensive, then just recomission the old 3"50cal twin mounts that used to be so widespread in the USN. Inexpensive, and designed to tear apart Japanese kamikazes with one hit.

We used to go diving in the Bahamas every spring break on a 65 ft. liveaboard - the Capt. said there was 'significant firepower' on board but we never did see exactly what they had.

He said they've been approached a few times in some of the more remote areas and that they had to keep a constant lookout.

I can see 'modern' pirates going after a containership...kinda ballsy going after a cruise ship.

Well, they could hire the Russian Navy as escorts, I'm sure the lads would like the warm weather and regular pay.

Geoff
Who likes to see the Navy gainfully employed.

I wonder if incidents like this could pose for change in cruise-ship's conceal/carry policy? Speaking of which, what are the regulations for carrying in international waters? Dang, I wish we could start to work on "national reciprocity".... carry in Jamaica/Netherland Antilles/costal Africa would sure be nice, and necessary.

But then again, I'm in Canada, and still hallucinating from last nights dreams of liberty and sweet southern BBQ.

You don't really need fire power, just need to express it.

I mean, I don't know why people think Piracy is so outrageous these days. Speed boats, Smuggled weapons, miles from anything resembling assitance, all you need is a radio, hunt down a cruise ship spend maybe 30 minutes looting, and then just take off to any near by country of your choosing.

I think if they had fire arms on a cruise-ship it wouldn't be as relaxing, it'd be realistic, but not relaxing. But whatever, I think this just proves more so that people should be allowed to carry fire arms more easily so.

For pirates an ARRRRRRRR-15 should do......
Galdangit! A feller has got to keep a case of keyboards handy if he hangs around this stinkin' forum! :p

Pirates? Why the origional Mississippi cure should take care of that....just stick one of these in the gut of any captured pirate and sooner or later...word gets around.
:D

In the Straits of Malacca the Malaysian pirates regularly take over unarmed supertankers and container ships who by company policy can only keep all their lights on to illuminate the sea around and use firehoses to try to keep the boats off.

The pirates are almost always outnumbered and often only armed with machetes but the crews are by policy unarmed. The ships' safes get rifled, personal items (cigarettes and electronics, piddly stuff) are stolen and the crew, much like 7-11 clerks, are ordered not to resist.

So we have supertankers with tied-up crews blasting down a narrow channel choked with other shipping and reefs due to company fears of liability. :banghead:

Or an old Civil-war Parrot gun.

Years ago some cruise ships had shotguns on board for shooting clays off the stern. I wonder if that's still done, or have they gone to bio-degradable airsoft pellets.

It's an interesting question. A cruise ship typically docks in 3 or more different countries, so how can you outfit a boat to resist pirates without violating the laws of those countries? I think MGs/RPGs are out of the question, so at best we're limited to semiautos or maybe pump/bolt actions. If docking with any guns at all is illegal we're screwed so I'll ignore that possibility.

I'd say the best choice would be 308 or 30-06 loaded with AP bullets. We need a fast bullet because the boats are going to be moving around and there won't be time to calculate drop, and AP because we may need to shoot through the walls or rails of a speedboat. Also, keep some shotguns in reserve in case they actually get on board.
