What handgun surprises you that people buy?

Hmm....

You know, this is a personal opinion, but I really don't understand why people buy Glocks. First, the "trigger safety" is just plain stupid. It seems to me that not placing your finger on the trigger would be as effective and cheaper! Second, I find them uncomfortable, and third, they are butt-ugly. Now, no doubt, they are good guns, and I don't want to insult any die-hard Glock fans, but I really don't understand why people pay so much money for them.

Those single shot, bolt action pistols in rifle calibers. I just don't get it. Buy a rifle!

This mystifies me as well. I am also dont really understand "collectors edition" pistols. Now, im not talking about ACTUAL collectable pistols like vintage Colts and the like, im talking about those new-production pistols that are all dolled up and come in a wood box, they cost 5 times the price of the actual weapon and only retain their value if you never shoot them. An expensive gun that you cant shoot doesnt make sense to me.

Guys
Everything made with plastic. Proudy old fashioned guy.

Those Magnum Research revolvers chambered in 45-70 Gov. I have fired some stout 45-70 cartridges out of a Marlin lever action and recoil is stiff, I cannot even fathom firing the same rounds out of a revolver. I know one of the moderators here owns one and likes it, and I sure would not mind trying one, but I'll pass on buying one.

you know, after I complained about Glocks, I felt I had to point out the other thing I don't understand... Although, no doubt, they are fine, well made guns, I have never understood why people will spend such a godawful amount on the high end Wilsons, Baers, Kimbers, etc... I am not complaining about the guns themselves, not even a little bit. All the manufacturers I just mentioned make fine guns that I would be proud to own. I just think that the prices they charge, especially in an era where CNC machines can turn out high precision parts cheaply and rapidly, are absolutly ridiculous. Lets use Kimber for example. Obviously, there is a market for the high-end pieces they make, and its common sense to appeal to that market. But, your telling me that Kimber cannot produce a solid 1911 thats priced within the reach of a good chunk of us shooters? I can guarantee you that if Kimber (or Baer, or Wilson.. actually, especially Wilson) turned out a solid, workingmans 1911, that had good sights and maybe a slightly larger than average beavertail to guard against hammer bite, for a max price of about 700$ to 750$ (and preferably closer to the 600$ range), I, and I suspect alot of us, would buy one. Springfield is selling its GI Model left and right for somewhere around $400 dollars. If they made the EXACT SAME GUN, with the only changes being a set of good sights, they could bump the price to around 500$ and sell even more, in my opinion. Bump it up to 550$ for a beavertail, and by god, you have a winner. Additionally, I hate when gunwriters call a 1500$ gun "Affordable". Anyway, thats my rant.

What I don't understand is people who don't want to own a certain type or make of firearm. I'll take one or more of each firearm ever built thank you very much. I don't care who made it, or how little or much it costs. Even a Lorcin or the like has a place in a collection as an example of cheaply made pistols.

well, I guess it depends on what you call better sights. I had a Mil-Spec, and it was OK, and your right, the sights ARE better than the GI. However, when I said better sights, I meant like Novaks or something. Still, your right, the Mil-Spec does, by and large, fulfill what I was saying. I wish I knew what the sales numbers were on the Mil-Spec series, as I think they would prove my point.

Those Magnum Research revolvers chambered in 45-70 Gov.

That's what I used to think. But then a fellow at the range let me fire off some standard hunting loads out of his, and I was very impressed. Accuracy is excellent and recoil is long and rolling. No snap at all. It was ten times easier to fire than my old SRH Casull. Frankly if I get a hunting handgun, it will be one of those. They're real sleepers.

Just saw an ad on the back page of July 4, 2005 issue of Shotgun News for a EAA handgun called "Thor" that is available in .30-06! :what:

I don't really enjoy shooting my grandfather's '03. (yeah, OK I'm a wuss ;) ) I can't image what a .30-06 in a handgun would feel like.

Do these monster pistols come with a supply of anabolic steroids, or a free 3rd testicle?

As long as it doesn't say "Hi-Point" or "AMT", just buy whatever the h@ll suits your fancy!

Any Ruger semi-auto handgun. I've always thought they were the ugliest things coming down the pike.

I'm referring to the large caliber one's, not the Mk whatever .22s.

What handguns surprise me, that people still buy?

Glocks -
the grip angle is horrible and so is the trigger. the Glock 45s have the worst grip of any autopistol...unless you're some huge gorilla like man that thinks a 4x4 post is a comfy pistol grip.

Beretta 92s -
again, that huge grip, it is also way too big for a 9mm and has that crunch-tick, loooong trigger pull. No thank you.

Snub nosed 357s -
not comfortable to shoot at all, too much blast, too noisy and uncontrollable

Ruger P-89, P-90, etc. -
ugly, chunky and seem crudely made, horribly long trigger pull, there are better looking pistols out there for less money (i.e.: the great CZ-75 series)

Auto Ordinance 1911s -
For not much more dough, you can have a basic Springfield Armory 1911 with a lifetime warranty and a better track record.

Any of those huge, long barreled, cannon revolvers -
Raging Bull 454s, 460 and 500 S&Ws...these usually appeal to the same guys that drive jacked up trucks and have rottweilers with spiked collars (and little d*cks)

Desert Eagle 44 and 50 cal. Autos -
See the above group...yes...this is their choice in autopistols. Totally impractical and silly-looking, to say the least! Pick another way to impress your girlfriend, ok?

1911s chambered for 9mm -
Why? Isn't the idea of a 1911 to get a pistol in 45acp? Would you buy a Corvette with a V-6? Of course not! May the ghost of John M. Browning smack you upside the head for such a silly choice.

ANYTHING double action only -
Why do you want a revolver like trigger pull in an autopistol?

ANYTHING in 380 or 32acp -
Why? The Makarov is usually cheaper, more powerful and almost the same size and is cheaper to shoot. Its also all-steel, not pot metal, like most cheapo 380s and 32s.

Well, thats my short list.

Glocks. They just don't seem to be worth owning, IMO. If I had the money for a brand new glock, i'd buy a used something else. Flame suit on.

Myself personally, I think a 1911 in 9mm would be absolutely FUN!

A 1911 with less recoil, easier follow up shots, and CHEAP to shoot? In a 1911.

I personally love the 1911 platform. Its the same reason people buy 1911s in .22, 9mm, 9x23, .38 super, .40 etc etc... to experience different loads and chamberings for the 1911. If I had the money, I'd go buy each and just keep 1911s, because I love em' that much.

With the corvette reasoning, its like saying why buy ANYTHING in 9mm when the same gun is offered in .45 ACP.

Good day!

Walther PPK, why spend the money on a gun that is only almost as good as a Bersa for 1/3 the price?

Makarov, with the lousy sights, trigger and ergos, why would anyone buy one? It is also a weird cal so you have to hunt for ammo as well. The Bersa can do everything the Mak can do and do it better.

S&W 500 Mag, just what is the point of this one? I assume it is fun but other than that why?

Desert Eagle, in addition to be big and ugly, they love to jam. I guess Hollywood hype is stronger than I thought.

Here is one I changed my mind on:
Springfield XD. At frist I thought it was just an uglier version of the Glock and a cheap ploy to grab some quick sales but then I handled one. I am going to buy one soon because I feel it is probably a better gun overall than the Glock.
END QUOTE

Well why buy PPK because of the history. Why buy a bersa. 380's the size of a 9mm make no sense to me.

The 500 mag in its 4 inch version would be nice in my neck of the woods as bears live up here too.

The XD I hate the trigger. Longe reset can't stand it.

I agree on the Desert Eagle.

HK USP- Nothing wrong with them, but they don't do anything a Sig or Glock won't do except lighten your wallet. To each his own.

Highpoint- ugh!!

Holy Crap!

This thread was supposed should be about guns that surprises you ppl buy...

It looks more like an, I dont like _______, thread.

Honestly, Does it really shock and surprise you that people buy Glocks or 1911s?????? Get real

Now the post mentioning a 45-70 derringer, theres some merit to that one.
or how about that "Mexican Special" 1911 that was offered on gunbroker?

That crap surprises me.

Now I dont particularly like the feel of some SIGs but Im not surprised when people buy them.
