I'm looking around for a handgun and I thought it would be a fun a novel idea to get a .44 mag plus the smaller guns would seem like a .22 when I got used to a .44

then I thought, what about the ammo?

What is the cheapest .44 mag ammo available?

If you're planning to get even half way competent with a .44 magnum you better learn to roll your own. Cheap .44's are a mythical beast and, if they ever existed, are long extinct now.

what i ment was whats the cheapest? not .10 cents a round ammo. I can shoot a .45 in a compatent manner.

plus i was thinking of having it as a option to handgun hunt.

From what I've seen Blazer is about as inexpensive as 44 mag comes (the kind that can not be reloaded). I picked up a couple of boxes for $20 each. They shoot just fine.

MagTec is about the cheapest factory stuff I've found. I get it online from Ammo 2 go. Once you get some, I buy 200-300 at a time, save the brass and send it to Mastercast and they will reload it for you.
When you shoot a .44M, you have a lot of choices for ammo. They range from 165 gr HP from Cor-Bon to 340 gr HC from BB. Don't forget, you can shoot .44 Specials too.
Double Tap and Buffalo Bore make 'premium' stuff for your normal hunting needs and if you want some really heavy rounds, go for Garrett or Grizzly.
Enjoy your 44M, they are the best all-around handguns out there---MY OPINION of course.

The two main calibers I reload for are .44 Mag and .500 S&W Not only are they too expensive for me to shoot without reloading, by doing so I can load everything from cowboy practice loads (.44Mag not special) to as hot as factory rounds. Where reloading really shines, is that I can also load in between loads that don't kill my hand as much as factory loads, but still have plenty of power.

Georgia Arms is still a bit slow in shipping, due to demand, but they make a great product. I believe their .44 Magnums are in new Starline brass - their Specials are. They run from $450/1000 for 200gr LRNFP Cowboy loads at 750 fps to $530/1000 for 240gr Speer Gold Dots at 1325 fps. I still use their 200gr Gold Dots in .44 Special and .38 +P 158gr LSWC(HP) loads. Before I started reloading seven years ago, I had bought >2,000 .45 Colts and many .45 ACP, .454 Casull, etc. Always first rate ammo - and clean - except for the .32 H&RMs - pretty nasty from a handgun. Nice folks, too - even if they won't visit Birmingham, <100 miles from them, any more for a gunshow. Seriously, if they make something you can use, try them - and save the brass - I never thought I'd reload, either!
