This thread isn't about "why open carry" but "why did you pick that gun over some other gun for OC." I'll start.

I OC a 10mm Witness automatic. I picked it for myriad reasons; I like manual safeties, it is surprisingly accurate, feels good in my hand, has VERY manageable recoil (my biggest concern getting it), and I like 15 fullhouse 10mm rounds for bear defense.

I know what my favorite OC pairing will be,a model 64 smith&wesson and special purpose Mossberg 500E.

My reason is because well even though it's just a .410 it's still a shotgun, and that alone trumps most handguns in a defensive encounter, Plus I figure I would already be open carrying a shotgun so why wouldn't it make sense to carry a handgun as well?

For OC I usually go with my Glock 23 or old Kimber BP Pro .45
I'm more accurate with the Kimber than the Glock...and for OC I would prefer the Kimber. Problem is, I don't have a very good holster for the Kimber and can't seem to find one.

Sadly, we don't have OC here in Florida. But if we did, I'd OC a full-size USP 45.

Since size/concealability wouldn't be a factor, the USP is rugged, has good capacity, and has the control setup that I'd like for carry: DA/SA, decocker, and manual safety. I know Sig has the same control setup, I'm just not a Sig guy.

I carry a Kimber 4" 1911 concealed now. 1911's are still my favorite shooters, and its nice and thin. But if I didn't have to worry about concealing, I'd probably not carry a SA-only gun.

I OC either a Ruger Vaquero in 45 Colt, a S&W 66, or a Ruger Sngle Six in 22 LR/22 WMR. The only times I do so is when I am walking the property at either home or the cabin.

I carry the Single Six to pop critters while ambling about at the house, ground squirrels, gophers, skunks, raccoons, and the like are its normal fare. I do a fair bit of plinking "targets of opportunity" with it too, dirt clods are always fun as one gets to see a reaction with them most of the time.

I carry the Vaquero or S&W at the cabin in the very unlikely event of a problem bear or wolf but more importantly, it is a long ways and time for a deputy to come if a people problem should develop. And it will only be one deputy for a long time as they are few and far between. So far I have been fortunate as the dirtballs down the road have left me alone but it was a close thing when the one kid shot and killed his stepfather, we were there that night and the kid ran through the yard to hide in the swamp behind the cabin. Oh, there was a 20+ minute time difference between the kid running through our yard and the siren of the first deputy passing the cabin.

I pick these guns to open carry for one reason, belt holsters are all I have for them. Pop them on a gunfighter or duty belt and one can take them off easily when necessary. Otherwise, I carry concealed, even at the above places much of the time.

Depends on the situation...

If I need something small and unobtrusive, a KelTec P9.
If I need something more formal, a 1944 Hi-Power.
If I'm just grabbing a gun in the morning, probably a replica Colt Bisley in .45 Colt.

Stoeger Cougar 9mm, Speer Gold Dot 124g +P. Accurate, feels great in my hand, and has a safety and hammer (carried hammer down, safety off).

No OC here, but if we did and I chose to OC vs CC, it would be a Springfield Range Officer (modified with tritium front and a Harrison Extreme Service rear sight). I like the 1911 and currently carry an STI Shadow as my daily CCW. If I were to OC, I'd go with the full size instead of the compact 1911 for the extra round and the longer sight radius.

With my black kilt, I choose a coordinating colored gun.

Mainsail...two comments:

First, good move on getting a retention type holster for OC. (If I'm correct, that's a Serpa, isn't it?) Minimal trouble with the draw, but will prevent the casual snatch.

Second, where do you keep the spare magazines? If they're in your pocket, that's not really an ideal spot. Got a mag carrier?

Maybe they're under the kilt?

Sometimes I strap on a G17 in the same holster as the fellow in the kilt. That really is a good rig for fast draws and comfort. Other times, open carry for me is simply the removal of the concealment article of clothing thus exposing the G29 IWB. I never feel undergunned with that one.

I sort of "hybrid carry" where I try to conceal, but if the wind blows and it shows, I don't really care. Sloppy perhaps, but within the law, and believe it or not, most folks are so oblivious to what is going on around them I seldom get second looks.

I rarely OC, basically only when taking a short trip and I don't feel like CCW'ing. I OC what I concealed carry...typically a glock 19 or 26.

why did you pick that gun over some other gun for OC.
Because I already have it and it puts sufficient sized holes in bad guys in hopes of stopping them...and because I can't legally carry a rifle, nor would it be comfortable. Instead of buying a gun just to wear, I'd rather just carry what I have and spend more money on ammo.

I've OC just about all of my pistols. I've carried my Dan Wesson .357 several occasions into public on my hip, as well as my P95, P11, RIA 1911, and S&W 22A.

Second, where do you keep the spare magazines?

I can carry a spare mag on the left side or in a pocket (the kilt has plenty of those). Nonetheless, if 15 rounds of DoubleTap 200gr 10mm doesn't solve the problem, it's unlikely another 15 will. ;)

1) Mainsail, are you a Utilikilt Employee?

2) if so, thanks to your company for custom-making my extra-long workmens' kilt for my 6'5" lanky self.

3) if I'm dropping into OC, (rare but it happens) I tend to go for my Schofield. If it's going to be seen, I'm carrying the one that looks like a museum piece. ( I have it in a really strong clamshell holster, can't draw it without a good forward rip)

I might "have" to OC with the kilt this summer.
