What Made You Decide To Carry?

911 I realized that if good people were allowed to carry on a plane it would never have happened. Bad guy gets up 10 people point their guns at him he sits down!! I know its extreme but my thought was if it works in that situation it would work in others.

this has always been my thinking. it started way back when hijacked planes were a daily news headline back in the 70s and 80s

" Why I continue to carry " The closest gas station to me and that I use was robbed twice in one week last month in the day time.
All or most of the banks in the area have been robbed multi-times.
Several neighbor have had break ins over the years. My wife was chased in her car at night on the way home from work. She pulled in the a police station.
I had a man approach my car asking directions instead of rolling the passenger window 2" it went down 6" or so and he stuck his whole body through the window. Being Gods chosen left handed gunner my hand was on my gun. In a very loud threatening voice I demanded him to remove himself I think once he saw my posture and demeanor he left rapidly.
There is not a place that I can go that has not had violent and or gun crimes in my town.

And the list goes on.

One more reason today in my town.............

While I'm 66 years old and reasonable good health I am no match for any bad guy unless I have a protective weapon
( unless he was 77 and in bad health)

I stay alert, avoid situations, walk away from danger, but as a final and last resort ...

Why?

The Luby's shooting put the thought in the back of my mind. My Father, before he passed away, was pushing for me to get my CHL when they became available.

I didn't really put much thought into getting my CHL until I was harrassed by a co-worker about 8 years ago. His showing up at my 'work area' wasn't as bad as the repeated phone calls. I could very easily hear and see anyone coming into my area (zoo keeper) and was able to move about the enclosures with ease as opposed to those unfamiliar with the daily care of the animals (several of the animals wouldn't tolerate 'strangers').

The phone calls would happen about every 4-5 minutes for hours, call, hang up. Call, hang up. I wouldn't answer, the doofus was dumb enough to use his home phone (Caller ID is the GREATEST!). Tried to broach the subject with employers, he was a long-time employee and the son of a long-time employee, apparently I was misunderstanding things. I was more worried about him showing up at my apartment (back side of the building with a street access gate that sometimes worked). Research at the time showed confronting this type of person (or having someone-boss, LEO talk to them) did 1 of 2 things: either stopped the behavior or it escalated. 50-50 odds aren't great in that situation.

Not long after, he was fired for refusing a drug test and then died in a drunk driving accident.

I now have at my disposal, a Kel-Tec .380, Glock 9mm, and my fave a 2" snubby .38.

That's my story.

jk of course. The truth is a combination of things. 9/11 was my first day in college and turned my world upside down. I was on the London Underground during the actual bombing and the second attempted bombing (and was probably on the circle line train that blew up and transfered off just in time - which particularly freaked me out). I was assaulted on the side of the road one day by a bunch of unfriendly looking guys with dreads and gold teeth.... and some 400 lb jerk threatened to rape me (and I'm a guy! ). He actually started to unbuckle his pants and unzip his fly. What a freak. That last incident was actually the first incident and the order of these incidents is jumbled. I was 17 when that guy threatened me like that. I ran.

Now I carry..... always. I figure that I don't want to push my luck, so I need to be proactive.

I initially only became interested in getting a carry permit because I was incensed to learn during a hunter safety course that in MA it was UP TO THE POLICE CHIEF WHETHER YOU COULD HAVE ONE!!! This made me nuts as a rights issue!!! I have since been carrying whenever I can since I learned so much since then. It was like that bubble burst in the movie; "The Matrix" and I genuinely started to take in the ramdom acts of violence that were occuring daily and not just to "gangbangers" and the like.

My friend was attacked and about to be stabbed when he pulled out his .45. He'd only been returning from a Red Sox game! The church shooting. The mall shootings. The elderly couple who were beaten in their homes in my middleclass neighborhood in a "wilding" incident.

The antis say WE are paranoid! They believe that bad things only happen to other people etc. I also must confess however that I just plain like to carry as an excercise in a "civic pride" if you will! I am NOT one of those "weekend Rambos" who dress in SWAT regalia checking "exit points and shot angles" who are alert to any old lady with a shopping bag as a potential Uzi carrying terrorist! Y'know, the ones who carry concealed and look for any opportunity to let anyone know they carry! Those guys creep me out too!

I believe I've posted this before but here we go again for posterity's sake. In 2002 my wife and I were newlyweds and recent college graduates moving to Baton Rouge, LA. At that time Baton Rouge had a serial killer (Derek Todd Lee) on the loose killing young women whose description my wife roughly matched. I had grown up shooting and hunting, so my attitude toward firearms was already positive, but I had never owned a gun of my own at that point. So I decided that it was time to buy a shotgun, "just in case".

So I got a Benelli Nova 12 ga. figuring that while it wasn't perfect for self defense purposes, it could do double duty as a hunting gun. It was kept loaded by the bed, "just in case". One thing led to another and after a couple of years I purchased my first handgun, a CZ 75 P01, and applied for a concealed carry permit, "just in case". I have carried ever since, but now I primarily carry a Sig P229R with Crimson Trace grips, "just in case".

Fortunately for both us, Mr. Lee and I never had the opportunity to make one another's acquaintance.

If I felt like doing the searches, I could post links to at least a dozen shootings and homicides within the last year less than 2 miles from home or work.

Back home in western NY, 99% of the violence was in the ghetto. But in Vegas it spills over into every town. Even the nicest suburb, which is where I live.

I always carry my .45 and two spare mags. Actually yesterday I also had my PSL Dragunov in the car with me because I went to the range for lunch. That one's not listed on my CCW though, and I'm not sure how I would fit the 26" barrel in my pants.
