What should a non-gun owner know about guns?

IMHO: the #1 rule for safety is to remove the "mystique" or "curiosity" of a firearm. Many people say they do not like guns, but one day, find themselves handling one.

It's the same reason why kids who are "taught" that smoking is "bad" still try it. This is why you have a young kid learn to swim, even thou he "knows" he shouldn't be in the pool withotu adults.

This is why I think the best course is one where you actually take them to a range, and INSTRUCT them how to use the firearm safety [ including the Four Rules! ], and let them SEE FOR THEMSELVES what a firearm is, and what it does.

Maybe they still "hate" firearms, but at least you have removed the curiosity. And who knows, you may just introduce a new member to the sport ;-)

Basic mechanics and The Four Rules.

pax, like many here in the Midwest, I grew up in a household where guns were the province of males, and only males. I have no memories of my mother, grandmothers, aunts, great aunt ever handling firearms.

My father owns several gun safes worth of firearms, but my mother has no interest in them. This is the same for the wife of my brother and his in-laws.

However, I do remember my mother knowing how firearms operated and did know how to safely handle them. My brother has taught his wife The Four Rules and how firearms operate.

My current SWMBO, The Blonde, has no interest in firearms but since she lives amongst them she does know, 1. The Four Rules, 2. not to touch them, 3. the guns will not leap from their hiding spots and attack her.:D
