Or, designated marksman's rifle. I'm feeling the need for one, and I have the funds for one, but which one? Criteria as follows:

1) Reliability. When you are facing hordes of undead, it really has to work!

2) Accuracy. Only headshots count! (prefer <2moa)

3)Hi cap mags/fast mag changes . The Undead don't give time-outs for ammo fumblers!

4)Suppressable; I don't want to wake up more of the dead than I have ammo to kill.

I already own a poodle shooter in AR, and I own a hair splitting Remington in .308, but I'm still feeling underpowered when the undead hordes come. As of now I'm steering toward a DSA FAL, let me know if I need any course adjustment....

The last time I killed some zombies, a 62 grain 5.56 round in the noggin took care of it just fine. Fast change of mags and a good rate of fire. Plenty available if you have to scrounge around for it.

Before some of you ask when and where I was killing Zombies, I can't tell you that... Its double super secret and I was sworn to secrecy. Just take my word that I was there... :neener:

Conventional wisdom says to use an accurate, light recoiling, high capacity weapon for zombies, because:
  1. They require headshots
  2. They are pretty soft
  3. They attack in large groups

I think this is one of the few situations where an FN P/PS90 would really shine. A 223 AK or AR would also be a fine choice.

A 308 rifle would be less than ideal because of the recoil making follow up shots more difficult and the increased weight of the ammo.

Chilean,
I've handled many guns, but I don't recall ever seeing a Sig semi or FA in .308, even at gun shows. I wish I could buy one. They are rare as hen's teeth here in the US.

If it was me I would use a 9mm Calico with a dozen 100 round mags and a red dot scope, magazines on the Calico can be changed rather quickly! Using a high calibre rifle is just overkill, and you can't carry as much ammo, and a head shot is the only way to kill them, even a 22cal could take out a zombie if you shoot him in the head. I would feel sorry if there was a zombie invasion of California, they would have a hard time with there nothing over 10 rounds magazine limit.:banghead:

For ordinary, non-armored zombies, I would choose a 9mm carbine. The low noise and high capacity would lend itself well to prolonged firing.

well, here in Chile you see a lot of sigs....but as a civilian you can´t have one, only for leos or military.(no semiautos for civilians)
I've used the sig 542 a lot (when I was in the chilean army). We use the sig 510 as a marksman weapon, and mauser sp66 as a sniper rifle. (at least in my time in the army,10 years ago). I think that currently the army use Sig 540 (5,56x45).

Before this gets closed-down, I'll play.

Ruger 10/22 with good 2-4X scope, 2 dozen mags and a pallet of target ammo. And a rooftop.

You will need to put down hundreds of them and still be able to use your loading-thumb and shoulder. A .22LR will do the job if you only do headshots from inside of 100yards. Fast, low recoil and easy follow-up shots.

The Ruger 10/22 with a scope and a big truckload of those Butler Creek 25 or 50 round mags....plus one other Human with the BC crank loader to keep the mags filled...

 :D  :D

LOL A ruger 10/22 with a scope was my last gun purchase! You're making justifying a new gun harder!! Am I already adequetely equipped to fight the hordes?

Dan

The BC crank loader works like a champ! Have one and am planning on wearing that thing out. :)

I said FAL...nothing like a 308 to spray the leftovers out.

good thread! i just watched '28 Days Later' last night - great movie.

if ammo/loaded mags aren't a big issue, this could be useful:

10/22 Gatling Gun!

Well you have to keep in mind that the zombie's natural predator is the double-barreled shotgun.....

But seeing as how this is a rifle forum, I would have to go with the FAL or the Saiga (in 12ga or .308). With both the FAL and AK action, reliability is hardly an issue, even after the rifle has been caked with zombie gook.

While 5.56 is more than sufficient to take out the brain with a head shot, .308 or 12ga is more likely to cause structural damage to the body and slow them down if you miss the head (a zombie with shattered shoulder-blades is going to have a hard time grabing you).

So, while shot placement is key, there is somthing to be said for having the biggest baddest boomstick on the block.:D

Give a a .22 mag in any semi auto action and a 3-9x32mm scope. Lots of ammo and a couple guys reloading. Zombies? What zombies?:D

I'd take an accurate enough 5.56mm rifle (AR-15 and credible competitors) over a .308 rifle for zombie killing, personally. Plenty of thump to crack a skull, and you can carry a whole lot more ammo. The usual zombie scenario does not include a shortage of targets . . .

The guys who suggested .22LR and other rimfire rounds may be onto something as well, for zombie defense. All you have to do is scramble the brains, and Hollywood does teach use that anywhere else don't do a thing (a bit silly, I admit . . . ).

M249 SAW. Drum only, no mags

Machineguns are just a waste of ammo. Why hit a zombie with a burst when all it takes is a single aimed shot to the head? Even if you shot a zombie's body to pieces it would still try to come after you. The only way to truly stop a zombie requires destruction of it's brain.

I'd vote for an AR/M4 in .223

But I'd be curious to see what a .17HMR can do to a zombie! :)

Why so quick to violence?

Have you even tried talking to the zombies?

The undead need hugs too!

Sincerely,
"Bub"

Isn't halloween over?

Poodleshooters shine here. 223 AK or AR + varmint rounds. Zombies aren't thick skinned.
