I m looking into buying one, and, I am really confused, I guess this is the fun part of buying anything.

Cheers,

It is kind of hard to answer without knowing what features are important to you. I had a Ruger SP101 and did not care for it. The double action trigger was terrible. I now carry a Smith & Wesson 640 and like it very much. I have shot a S&W 37 but the light weight does not agree with my arthritis.

For pocket carry the concealed hammer of the 640 and 642 is very nice. For holster carry I would like something like the S&W model 60.

You don't say what you want to do with the gun, but from the available choices, I'll assume you're looking for a CC piece. I recommend a 2" M10 or M64 S&W. Much easier to shoot than the smaller guns. If you're looking for a pocket gun, then the M640 or M60 would be a good choice although I do pocket carry my 2" M64 on occassion.

I think...

the most important factor for me is reliability and quality.

Pocket carry?

If so, consider the weight issues. The Smith is a lightweight revolver, and won't cause noticeable snags like the Ruger. The Taurus comes in regular and lightweight versions, and I can't vouch for anything on the Rossi.

If for holstered carry or for a "car gun," then weight is less an issue. Personally, I would look between the Smith, Taurus, and Ruger, with preference going to the Smith & Wesson.

Ruger SP101

If you want a quality, durable (built like a tank) revolver with NO internal trigger lock or any other sort of built in lock.
Some complain it's too heavy. I carry mine IWB crosdraw and in my jeans front pocket and don't find it too heavy. In fact, a little bit of weight is a good thing to lessen recoil when launching full-house 357 loads.
The DAO (spurless) does NOT snag on anything. That's why I picked that configuration so I can carry it in my jeans front pocket when I don't care about the print.

I voted other, only bacause I posted a similar question between the S&W 442, 642 & 637.

I purchased a 642.

Depends what you want. That list mixes apples and oranges, or at least oranges and nectarines.

Pocket snubby: Taurus 85[UL] or S&W 637. Lightweight alloy frame and small size.

If you inspect the particular Taurus with care before purchase and make sure everything's tight and straight, I think it may actually be the superior snubby. Mine has a far better trigger in DA and SA than any recent Smith & Wesson J-frame I've handled, and this is a common finding. I also like the Taurus grip better. But Taurus QC can be spotty at times. Inspect before you buy.

Belt snubby: Ruger SP101. Steel frame. Solid, shootable, compact magnum revolvers. Handsome too. Lots of customization and carry options. Not a featherweight, though.

Love the SP101

The SP101 is for me. I can see why someone wouldn't want to carry it IWB and certainly not in a pocket... it's heavy. But OWB on the hip I've got no probelm with it at all. I'm 5' 7" and 160 (small build obviously) and carry all day without a problem. Very concealable with a decent pancake hoslter. The Galco Speed Master is a decent, not top of the line holster that will work fine until you can get into a Del Fatti or some other good make. In .357 with the 25 oz. weight, it's very controllable. And loud. And makes a big flame. And loud. Defnitely fun to shoot with a Hogue uni-grip. Not only that, you can feed it the highest powered magnums you can find for life and the thing will never break... it's the tank of pistols.

If I was going to pocket carry I'd go with the S&W Airweight or the Taurus. I've never shot either but know several that have and love them both. I'm considering either one in .38 for a comfortable IWB carry for myself when the OWB isn't going to work. My only concern would be second shot line up with the dramatically lighter weight, but in .38 it shouldn't be a huge problem. A 14 oz. .357 would be a handful and I can't imagine that it would be terribly comfortable to shoot.

Either way, best advise after all that is to go find them all and shoot them before you make a choice. It will be a matter of which gun wants you that will finalize the decision.

Check out the 642. The 637's hammer spur isn't real usefull considering the gun's intended use.

The concealed hammer of the 642 lets you get a higher grip to better controll recoil and they usualy have nicer actions because of less internal parts.

The SP-101 is a great gun if you're going .357 instead of .38spl. Kind of heavy for pocket carry though.

S&W N-Frame with 2-3 inch barrel. Choose from 45 ACP, 44 Magnum/SPL and 10 mm.

There is also the 586 L-Comp. It is chambered in 357 Magnum, holds 7 shots, and includes a compensator. It is a Performance Center gun, you get a trigger job and front night sight.

My first two purchases this year.
The SP101, 3", OWB with .357 loads and,
the 642 for pocket with +P.
I love both of these.

I have a taurus snub and can vouch for its quality. The M85 is about $100 cheaper in the ultralite version than the smith 37. If you're buying a snub, my advice as an owner of a steel snub is to buy an aluminum frame gun. You will carry it more than you will shoot it. Once you get to the concealed or shrouded hammer models, there is less of a price difference, and in that case I would go with the smith. Check out budsgunshop.com It's a really good site to compare prices. I have purchased from them as well and they were very good to deal with.
If you're going to IWB it or pocket carry it, go for the shrouded hammer. But if you're going to use a thumb break OWB, the exposed hammer has better holster choices.
Peace Out! :)

For frequent shooting: Ruger SP101 or S&W 36

For belt carry: S&W 60 (stainless version of 36)

For pocket carry: S&W 642 or 638. I'd avoid the 637, as it offers no advantages over the 638 (both can be fired single action), but increases the chance of snags.

FWIW, I have a 642 (solid steel, shrouded hammer), and it carries just fine on the belt.

I don't see a lot of advantages to non-pocketable snubs - if I'm going to carry IWB/OWB, I can take along a compact pistol with longer barrel and superior sights.

So my vote would be to the 638/642 first - I'd love a SP-101 or one of the many S&W steel snubs, but they would be 'fun' guns IMO.
