Why is my brain doing this to me?

I would bet your Weatherby has a 26" tube

Yes it does...

To the OP, at least your man enough to admit the '06 recoil bothers you. It would be beneficial to shoot a few different rifles in various configurations if your able. I have a Winchester .243 that I don't really care to shoot. It's an early 70's gun and while it doesn't really kick it just doesn't fit me all that well and I can find myself flinching.

Muzzle blast will also have a adverse affect on how your perceive recoil. Best think you can do while shooting off the bench if your recoil sensitive is invest in some good ear muffs and also use foam plugs and don't be afraid to get a recoil absorbing shoulder pad while your doing bench work.

You can't really compare a 100g 6mm slug to a .30 cal 150g slug. They'll both kill a deer just fine and you can't consider the heavier slug overkill. That heavier slug will penetrate deeper on a questionable shot, chances are it will go through leaving 2 holes. A factory 100g .243 slug more often than not will not give you two holes. A premium bullet in the caliber will, but most over the counter stuff will not.

Someone that is comfortable and confident shooting a smaller caliber will be a whole lot better off than someone shooting something that their afraid of and can't shoot effectively.

Just find something you like and your comfortable with, don't skimp on ammo and be happy. If it's a sport you enjoy, than more than likely you'll get that 7mm-08 or .308 or whatever else sometime down the road.

I hardly rifle hunt anymore, and yet I have 9 deer rifles and another Rem XP-100 in .308. It's kind of a disease. Three of those have been purchased in the last year.
