Wild Hogs

Well, I'll be in Colorado county, just down stream.....two or three hundred miles...:D The Colorado cuts across 90A between Altair and Eagle Lake. Lotsa hogs in them woods and I have a few acres there with the house, enough room for the trap and a box blind/feeder. I'll probably tote my 5.5" '58 Remmy some and maybe shoot a pig with it at some point. :D That thing is accurate and toteable. The ROA is a bit of a brick on the hip. All my BP stuff is in storage at the moment except for the guns which I've kept with me. I haven't gotten to shoot a front loader in 2 months, mostly just .22s, but I like my .22s. :D

My 100 yd range is 25 ft from my door , have a 500 yd range 5 miles away! My Remington shorty s are m. O. H. Minute of hog up to 100yds
Sand bags of course , only actually shoot hogs at 5 to 10 ft no sights just wait till they turn and charge And boom! Drops em like a rock, .357 mag required 4 shots so like I said it stays home now

My pair of shorty s are always loaded but so is my 51 sheriff , walker , combat commander, Kentucky pistol, ....
Now if I'm hunting or scouting my remmy is on my hip my Stevens 311 is in my hand! 18.5 " barrels night time might be 13" barrels

Thanx Noose, i figgered there was smokin involved in there somewhere.
I've tasted non smoked pork before and, well, there jist wernt no flavor to it.
Suprising that yer chops were tough. That area of an animal is the tenderest meat.

I bet bore huntin is a very exciting undertaking.
'specialy with a soot maker :D

Hmm, shot a buncha hogs with .357 and never needed, but one. The wounding is impressive. Heavy bullet for hunting. The little one in that pic I shot with my carry load, 140 grain Speer JHP bullet and from the 3" barrel of my carry gun, about 600 ft lbs. I load it over 17.0 grains 2400. It's hot. The pressure from it in that pig's head blew out his right eyeball 3" out of its socket. Kinda gory, didn't take the pic of it's right side. One thing about that little 3" carry, its sorta hard on the ears without hearing protection, but I guess if your life depends on it, I can get over the ringing eventually. LOL But, that's a price to pay for the horsepower. I don't even practice with .22s without hearing protection, though.

I've got a 180 grain XTP load pushes 1403 fps out of my 6.5" Blackhawk for 785 ft lbs. I've got a .45 Colt Blackhawk, too, that pushes a 300 grain XTP to 1120 fps for 800+ ft lbs from a 4 5/8" barrel. I need to kill one with that. I've shot a few in the trap with a cast 255 at about 950 fps, less than impressive compared to the .357, but it killed 'em. I'm sure the hot load will work better, just normally don't carry that load.

Then, I've shot 5 deer with my .30-30 handgun, a 2x scoped Contender. That one will put 1000 ft lbs on target at 200 yards and is 1.5 MOA accurate. My old eyes need the scope for that sort of precision. I'm not averse to modern technology, but I do like my black powder stuff. I will do more with it when I get settled. I have been thinkin' about killing SOMEthing with that ROA for 30 years and just haven't done it. It's a bucket list item, though.

McGunner and Noose,
You guys can be makin yer own black powder very easily and far cheaper than buyin it.

Yeah, I know, have several spots bookmarked. But, I'd rather just buy it...or a suitable substitute. The ONLY thing I don't like about the subs is that they're tougher to ignite. I won't even GO there with Blackhorn 209. Takes a blasting cap to torch that stuff. I know, I know, clean out the breach block hole, NAH, rather shoot 777 anyway. Can see absolutely NO advantage in the Blackhorn 209. 777 is accurate and powerful and goes bang without the hassles.

If I could easily get BP, I'd shoot it a lot due to the ease of ignition, so long as it was accurate in my gun. I would probably still hunt with 777 in the iinline, but I'd shoot BP in lieu of Pyrodex in my sidelocks and my revolvers. Where you can get it, it tends to be a little cheaper, too, but the ease of ignition is the deal with me. It performs no better otherwise. Caps torch Pyrodex just fine in my revolvers, but in sidelocks, it's an iffy deal. I converted one Hawken to fire number 450 magnum small rifle primers. THAT did the trick. :D The other, I just pull the nipple and dribble a little powder under it, insures ignition. With 2F, I wouldn't have that problem. But, I ain't drivin' to Austin just for powder. I mean, if it was 30 miles away, I'd avoid the traffic. Besides, I'm an Aggie, am allergic to that town. :D

Once I get out there in the woods and if'n I get real bored, I might mess with the BP synthesis thing. I can probably find willow along the river somewhere. One can order KNO3 and Sulfur online for the production of BP, high purity. I know about the feed store sources, too. I don't have any sieves, would prefer to screen it for proper granulation if I got into that. I've found sieve screens on ebay for about 40 bucks. Yeah, I've researched the subject.

You can jerk anything but you had better be sure it is COOKED or brined well. Pork is famous for tapeworms and trichinosis. Cooking kills the parasites.

Tapeworms and tricky noses ??

on the subject of black powder availability, someone put a link up recently to grafs and sons, that had pretty reasonable prices for real BP. plus if you were to order a few pounds at once it would lessen the impact of the hazard fee since they only have the one charge. i believe it was around $10-12 a pound for their BP. i kinda want to order me a few pounds as i have never shot the real stuff :(

I shot plenty of BP back in the day when gun shops kept it on the shelf with the other powders. DuPont was mostly what I got back then. I don't really notice ANY difference in BP and Pyrodex EXCEPT BP ignites more easily and that's kinda a big deal in a sidelock. A FLINTER of course, MUST have the real stuff for proper ignition.

Yeah, I've thought about ordering it. I might in the future once I get settled and the UPS guy knows where I am, only house 2 miles down a dirt road off the highway at the end of the road. No one has found it, yet. Well, we finally found an electric company to hook us up that has serviced the house for the previous owners. LOL Suffice to say, when I get there, I'll be able to shoot my BP stuff on my own range whenever I want. :D THAT will be way cool. I might have to get me some 2F for my CVA caplock rifle. I like shooting PRBs in that gun. :D

Oh, and I'll have some acreage with the house and the woods are infested with hogs and deer. :D
