Would you give up your gun if.....

its a large insect about 6 inches long with pincers that many people who conceal carry hide in their socks to throw at people when they run out of ammo.
:neener::what::D
yeah, its a backup gun

this is one of those funny things, there were once members here who claimed to be lawyers. Let them peruse their copies of the laws of their states to see if anything concerning this topic actually exists.

Lets assume..
1. cop comes up and demands your gun
-most cops are allowed/encouraged to carry a gun all the time, even when off duty.
2. You give the gun up
- your now defenseless
- the cop has no legal requirement keep the robber from cutting your throat with a mason jar lid because teh supreme court says he has no legal requirement to save you.

Some places (CA) you're required by law to surrender your CCW to any peace officer who asks for it.

Not saying that's a good thing.

I'll use this thread as an example to address many, many others I've been reading too....

Personally, I'm getting sick of these "cop bashing" threads and stories on THE HIGHROAD....IMHO

Seems like a new one sprouts up every damn day. (The cop did this, the cop did that, blah, blah, blah). Can't you find another forum somewhere else if you want to do this?

Yes...this particular post is very "tame" compared to some others, so maybe it's just the straw that is breaking my back, but where does it get us, really??

Maybe a few people should be researching "THE LOWROAD" instead.....

This is a forum is intended to foster the LAWFUL and SAFE use of firearms, promote LEARNING and SHARING INFORMATION to BENEFIT ALL OF US. Think about that the next time you post nonsense. Learning from experience....I've done it myself.....but c'mon guys. Enough is enough....or go somewhere else.....

In many ways it seems that the cop bashing has died down around here lately. I remember seeing a bunch of it when I first started posting on this site, so I can appreciate your concern!

As an LEO myself, I would probably not encourage anyone to hand over their gun in such a situation. This mostly stems from the fact that if the scenario played out like that, I'd question the validity of the badge I was just shown:

1) Badges do get stolen. One of my shift partners had a badge and gun stolen from his house about a month ago.

2) A lot of cops carry off-duty; I always do. Plus, in my experience, the cops who don't carry off-duty usually don't carry their badge either.

3) If the person in question was concerned enough about being armed in an emergency, they should have had a gun with them in the first place!

Ultimately, if that unlikely scenario ever played out you'd just have to make your decision based on the circumstances you are given!

It would be interesting to see how that would play out in a court room if someone was actually in the process of defending his life when the officer demanded it.

'Some guy' showing me a shiny yellow shield in his wallet. doesn't make him an officer of the law. There is a lot more involved with regard to providing credentials. LEOs usually have no problem proving their status if they are in plain clothes, unmarked vehicles, etc.

You and the wife are squeezing the bread deciding on which is the most fresh when you hear two shots and some screaming. Two seconds later I take Deb to a place I can defend. As we pass some people (shots were on the other side of the store) I tell them to folllow us. There are about six or seven of us when a guy crouch steps up to us, sees my semi-auto, flips out a local LEO badge and informs me that he left his gun in the car and for me to pass him my gun.
Too bad he wasn't prepared. I was, so I'll go ahead and defend myself. If I have a BUG I'll loan it out, but I don't usually have a BUG. Besides, I know I can shoot well. A badge doesn't do much to convince me that he can.

but the whole scenario is pretty silly

indoorsoccerfrea: I honestly don't see this as a cop bashing thread at all! I see it has a situational study, as in what would people do in this situation Thank you

As for this thread I think the scenario is outlandish , I can't imagine a bunch of people hiding in the back of the local Safeway while a robbery was going on, nor can I imagine one lone cop being dumb enough to try to clear a grocery store on his own.

David E : I'ts not a cop bashing thread. Someone is wound too tight. Thank you

I see this entire scenario as being , well...stupid

"The liklihood of the scenario related ranks with "If the Mothership landed on the interstate in front of you would you open fire, leave the area immediately, or welcome our visitors?"."

Oh please. This thread isn't bashing cops. CoMoRo Thank you.

But, yeah, this is kind of an off-the-wall post.

I would like to express my thanks to you who have encouraged me to develop another scenario. Or continue posting on THR. At 67, I have had a number of friends back in WV and a number of them are/were LEOs. I am personally acquainted with the Superintendent of the WV State Police. I have hunted with them, partied with them, and have shot with them. Some officers can get pretty base but they do it around their own. I have set in boardrooms with a number of LEOs including the FBI, Postal Inspectors, State, County and City lawmen. We negotitated the approach desired if my bank sent an alarm to the authorities. And there has been more than one bank.
I have had shoulders of pork catered/cooked at my house and had the whole force come by as they could.
I have never had a police officer disrespect me as you have.

I'd tell him no. It would leave you and your wife defenseless, and that is your top priority.

Not a chance would I hand my gun over.

I bought that gun for me and nobody can have that, I don't care who you are. What I would do is tell him to get the hell out of my safe space, And as he is leaving I would hand him my spare cell phone and tell him to call for some of his partners who might actually be prepared to do their job in the first place.

In a situation like that I am under no obligation to give up my firearm...And even if I was he wouldn't be getting it any time soon.
