I gave my choice of the marlin 30-30 asuming you meant life goes on as normal. I have ARs and Fals I would choose from in A SHTF situation. For any thing else The 30-30 Is A good hunting round, good for home defence. and light weight. Plenty of parts avalible. Easy to find ammo. If things go bad it is still A viable weapon.

I also like the M1A, hi-capacity, accuracy, reliability, simplicity, versatility, ruggedness/durability and in .308win. a very potent combination.

The COBB MCR (multi-caliber rifle) 400 in 300 RUM. High accuracy, Fairly easy ammo to get, can take down anything (in north america)

I must have read the question wrong. If you could only have ONE RIFLE, and ONE caliber, what would IT be. Not one lower and 15 uppers!!! The M1A would be a good choice along with the AR15, but the parts give me troubles. It may be different where some of you live, but if my M1A or AR breaks, I can't run down to Walmart and buy replacement parts. That being said, I would have to go with one of my AKs. No parts break and a better caliber then the .223.
Some of us are lucky and have ADCO firearms right down the road so getting AR/M1 parts takes as long to get as it does to get to walmart. I don't know what you are breaking on M1/AR but it isn't like they fall apart. Better caliber is only relevant to the use. There are a lot of situations where the x39 is lacking.

Mine would have to be a bolt, because If I can only have 1, I don't want it to break, and want to make storing parts a minimum. Probably a sako or cz.

It'd be in .308 or 30-06, in that order.

I consider the "AR with multiple uppers" to be cheating. The question of "one rifle" to me implies a single whole weapon that fires only a single caliber.

In that case I would want a weapon that was accurate, box magazine, large enough caliber to hunt with, easy to reload, easy (at least kinda easy) to find ammo for, all around good gun. My first choice would be an M1A in .308, second AR10 in .308.

I'm not a fan of .223 for hunting but I wouldn't cry about using an AR in .223 if it was what I had. I'd prefer one in 6.8 even though the ammo is harder to find.

Other options that I'd consider depending on circumstances include;
AK in 7.62
Lever action 30-30
Lever action .357, 41, or 44 mag (Seriously. Don't underestimate these)
12 Gauge shotgun

Having something to take small game with like .22, .22 mag, or the 12 gauge would be nice also.

My 1951 vintage M70 30-06. no ifs and or buts. when you own a gun for 30+ years and have taken a boat load of game with it it becomes a part of your arm. And as far as SHTF[what ever that may involve] you can learn to work that bolt mighty fast.

In what situation is a 7.62x39 lacking as opposed to a .223??? I will always take a .30 caliber over a .22 in any situation. Drag your M1A or AR through some mud or lose your oil bottle/cleaning kit, and you end up with a club.

I agree with those picking some type of M14, but I also agree with those choosing a 7.62 AKM.

one long gun

I guess I'd pick a 20 bore[62cal]Flintlock.I could use shot, roundball, and make my own powder if necessary. That is,if it's only one gun ,100 rds,and then you have to find more.If I can have only one ,out of all I own, with ammo,.22 rf.

Any rifle of the Armalite family, either an AR-15 or AR-10 because I am familiar with the operation, maintenance, and shooting of said weapon.

Likely I'd say an AR-15 with a 20" barrel, bipod, back up iron sights and a variable power telescopic sight for both close shooting and long range (400-600 meter) engagements. The reason I'm going for a 5.56 is ammunition commonality. If **** does hit the fan and there are dead federal/security/police types, they're liable to carry 5.56 and thus reloads...

30.06

Without a doubt a 30.06 if you could only have one rifle. It is the most effective, utilitarian rifle caliber ever made. You can drop varmints to the largest game in North America with it. If it could only be one it would have to be the 30.06.:)

PTR91 with the 22 conversion kit.

One rifle.

Two calibers.

Both readily available ammo.

Great optics abound. Easy, modular, design, easy to clean up after.
