I am an old 57 year old vet, computer illiterate so dont know how to post pics, but can tellyou I own some very nice rifles, Sakos, Remingtons weatherbys but my most accurate rifle will shoot dime groups all day is a Stevens 200 7mm-08, butt ugly, cheap looking RELIABLE...nothing else to say...

what do you think i should do as far as improving my accuracy?
im a youngster. and have aloooot of trigger time behind a .22 but not too much behind hpr's. and am feeling pretty good about my groupings. but i want to do better, like my frineds dad with his .5 moa groups, because im almost sure my gun can do it, i think i need the work.

go here: http://odcmp.com/CoachingResources.htm

you will find links to people in your area who will coach you, well-written articles from the US Army Marksmanship Unit and others, and presentations on marksmanship fundamentals, mental training, etc.

My advice would be to read those articles, and then try the techniques by dry-firing at home, and ask questions here about the details of techniques etc.

Front sight, pressssssssssss. Front sight pressssssssss (or cross hairs if you're using a scope). It's natural for the sights to move around a little bit. You can't hold it perfectly still. Don't try to time it to when it's going to pass exactly where you want to shoot. Do a lot of dry fire at home. And practice when you can. If you can't get to the range, just keep doing dry fire.

Also, put a bipod on your rifle. That helps me a ton. I then put my support and at the butt of the gun almost where it touches my shoulder. Both my elbows rest on the ground or the bench. It allows me to have three points of contact between the gun and the ground, which greatly reduces the movement. And the bipod doesn't move when you breathe.

I'm no expert marksman, but when I do all of this, I shoot pretty well

My Savage 12 FV, with the varmint load I shoot in it:

This is with a factory load with the 85 gr. SGK in the same rifle:

My 10-22, with Ely Match target:

I have some hunting rifles that also shoot small groups. My Ruger 77 RSI in .308 with shoot the factory 150 SST load into the low .5's, but only for 3 shots, and the same with my HK SLB 2000 in 30-06 with factory 150 SST's.

i do have a bipod on it, just not in the picture, i own 2 sandbags, and i use one always. other for whatever.
i thought i had an ex military coach, but he has disconnected from me.
so now im looking for one. and think i've found one locally at the gun club i shoot/work at, anyway i have school tomorrow so i'll check in in the morning, thanks for the imput so far, and nice rifles, except the 22 ;) just kidding.

Savage 93 17 HMR 50 rounds=1 .17caliber hole yeah it is that good but only with 17gr TNTs. For center fire rifles my Tikka T3 6.5x55 takes the cake .75 inches off the bench at 100 with any factory ammo I have tried so far.

browningguy, that Savage is absolutely sweet.

future army ranger, it's good to see the younger guys on THR. This is about the best resource online when it comes to forums, and you seem to be a very humble young man. You will be able to learn a great deal around here with that attitude.

Here's the rifle. Home built AR-15, with 16" BCM SS410 1:8 twist 5.56 barrel.

Some groups....none of the groups were fired letting the barrel cool. All were fired with rounds being fed from a magazine and as fast as I could get back on target and squeeze off the shot. I think my barrel behaves itself very well when run HOT.

All groups were fired at 100 yards. I believe that all of the target dots were 1" in diameter on a 1/2" grid.

that AR is a monster, great groops, great shooter too.
and yes its a Howa M1500, finally broken in, i love everything about it but want a better scope eventually.

and im in McDonough, south of atl. boringest place ever. lol

I'm in Savannah, bit of a drive. I get back from Iraq in DEC, if you can't find a better, closer instructor - find a 1000 yard range and I'll bring up a few toys you can really stretch your legs with.

I do teach marksmanship, sometimes to US Soldiers, usually to Iraqi Army Soldiers.

cool, my other coach quit on me. he was a life coach too. that was wierd dealin with.
i shot a barrett .338 lapua mag bravo 98 on saturday, but it wasnt zeroed yet, and was breaking in at 50 yrds.

Kachoc, I just got me a T3 in 6.5 x 55, aint shot it enough to settle on one particular ammo and I dont reload, just bought a couple of boxes of Remington 140 core lokt, how has that worked for you or have you tried that yet, I have some rifles that hate Remington, love Winchester, etc... go figure...

If that was my AR that you were talking about being a monster, it actually isn't. I took care in choosing the components. As you see it, without the bipod, it weighs in at under 10lbs. That's lighter than some M4 type carbines I've seen.

For the tightest groups I shoot an older Savage 112FTSS .308, a Sav 12 bvss and Winchester 70 Stealth .308. I have a number of rifles and all including those without scopes are pretty accurate. These two are my 'feel good rifles'. The Sav 112 shoots the same. All out of the box with no modifications.

The best 3rd group I've shot with the Stealth at 100 yds is .094 which I consider pure luck.

Sav 1.jpg

The best 3 rd grp with the Savage 12 was .097, another luck thing. Both rifles are consistent and shoot 5 different loads about the same with no change in scope settings

Yes, but by the time you put the money into parts and gunsmithing its generally more economical to build one from scratch.

Your Howa is plenty accurate, trigger time is more valuable than any amount of money you can put into a rifle.

i like my howa, but my next rifle will most likely be a remington 700 in 30-06 or 300 winchester magnum, preferably the 300. with a heavy barrel.
im happy with my gun now, and i don't believe a fat barrel means more accuracy, i think it means more shots without cooling.
correct me please.
