I won’t call it a “unicorn” or even a “grail” gun, but today I traded into one of those guns that I always wanted. Here, in Ohio, our deer cartridges are limited to cartridges with straight walls. Today, I traded into an unfired, still in the box, Marlin 1895G in .45-70. It’s a JM pre-crap-show Marlin....18” ported barrel. A thing of beauty. I traded a 28 gauge Citori. Dollar for Dollar, he got the better end, but you really can’t put a price on something that you’ve wanted but isn’t manufactured any longer.

I’m very happy. What’s your bucket-list gun?

At a point about 10 or 15 years ago, a Marlin .357 was so hard to come by that when I finally got one that was kind of a "bucket-list/unicorn" gun for me. I'm glad they're easier to come by now.

That's a sweet .45-70 - congrats on the purchase! I'm thinking about a .45-70 also...

Thats a sweet Marlin! Id do that trade anyday.:)

Ive been blessed to have found most of my bucket guns. Some were giant disappointments and went down the road. Some, like the Luger and M1922 were everything they were cracked up to be. Still like to find a P7 someday and the new Python and P210 are awfully tempting......

As a fellow Ohio deer hunter here, I can think of two off the top of my head...

I'd love to get my hands on a Rossi 454 R92. Almost as much power as the 45-70, but twice as handy.

Even moreso I'd love a 458 WinMag Mauser. I'd keep loads near 45-70 power levels so it'll kill on only one side of the muzzle and maim on the other.

I know your joy!

Last month, I backed into a VERY advantageous trade of a 1989/1895 though not a *G* as I seldom contend with *brush* anymore. It'll likely displace my FR-8 for Mule Deer next year. Got a pile of ammo and dies and got rid of an excess Winchester 97.

I was all but giggling.

Fantastic! I have always loved the lever action. The first gun that I researched, saved for, and ordered then purchased on my own at age 18 was a Winchester 94/22. Foolishly traded it for a bolt gun later in my 20s. If I could ever find an unfired specimen, I’d pay for it.

I currently have two JM Marlin 336 in .30-30, an older Winchester carbine in .44 mag and a new Miroku Winchester in .44 mag.

When my Pop died - I was charged with distributing his guns - IF I cared to at all. The Winchester was an easy distribution - never liked them. Letting the Marlin go to a Brother was only moderately assuaged by it being a .30-30 but I have still regretted it since.

THEN, seeing Marlin prices climb behind Savage 99 prices and later seeing the Remlin pooh-party really disheartened me. The already climbing Marilins only accelerated in price-climbing.

All the while, I was CERTAIN one would come my way *at a price*... To no avail!

Then, I decided to take one of my extra '97s to a gun show and it magitastically turned into; cash, an 1895 and accessories.

Patience HAD prevailed.

Interestingly - as pertains to you - I only regret selling 2 Winchesters in my life; a righteous 16 inch Trapper and a 94AE .44 mag. I'd caution you to think twice about ever selling yours.

Todd.

There’s a bunch of stuff I REALLY want, but until my collection includes a cannon it is not complete. I have started down a path though in which I may legitimately end up with capability to make my own cannon in a few years.

Of the things that are in the realistic category, a K-32, a Colt Trooper, and a Marlin 336 in 35win or 32 special. A Manurhin or a Dan Wesson could stand in for the trooper, realistically I just want a truly nice .357 and I haven’t met a 686 yet that will qualify.

I recently would`ve said a Colt Python, then the bombshell announcement that they`re reintroducing them came out. Suddenly, all those people that bought them for the investment aspect just lost a lot of money.
I immediately thought about what I could trade to lessen the coming hemorrhage on my bank account (hope the wife doesn`t read this ;)) then found out that some seem to be having problems with light strikes/cylinder rotation. Bad for them but good for me as it may have just saved me strife in my marriage when she saw the bank statement

I screwed up big time. I was in a gun dealers trailer at the Illinois state ATA shoot two years ago. Among the trapguns was an OLD '94 Winchester SRC marked "NEW MEXICO STATE PENITENTIARY " . It had character. The owner said, "I've been packing that gun up and hauling it around for a year." "I'll make you a gift of that for $900".

I should have bought it. I've been kicking myself since.

I know the feeling. Last year I traded a model 81 Remington stamped Minnesota state penitentiary. It's hard to get up in the morning now.

I could fill a composition note book with guns I really want.

Yeah me too. It would be easier and shorter to list the guns I don't want. But I have only ever had one "bucket" gun. A S&W model 631 in 32 mag. I finally found one a few years ago at a price I could justify spending for it. After I got it I shot it some but frankly liked my Ruger 32 mag single sixes better and sold it with a $300 profit. There are lots of guns I like and would like to have but now I do more window (gunbroker) shopping than actual buying.

OP your gonna really like that 45-70. I had one with the 22" barrel and the first 3 shots I fired from it were all touching at 100 yards. I don't care for the porting but then again the recoil was part of the reason I sold mine. It wasn't that I couldn't take the recoil it was the fact that I started loading reduced recoil 300gr loads going 1600fps and decided I could do the same thing with my 44 mag in a lighter gun using much less powder. So the 45-70 was sold. I don't miss it.

What year? Did you check the serial number on the list?
Great wood by the way.

I have a nearly mint 1969 Marlin 336 in .30-30 (pre-safety of course) that was one of the many rifles that languished in the Marlin vault for decades and got sold off to a bunch of LGSs when they made the big move.

My current bucket list gun is a Miroku Winchester 1873 short rifle in .44-40. I found a new one that is affordable and I am buying it. I would probably prefer .45 Colt but that isn't going to happen. So .44-40 it is, paper-thin cases and all. Not a problem though, and it's the original cartridge anyway.

I will need to pick up some dies and order some cases and a custom bullet mold, but I think that I have the whole finicky process well worked out, thanks to You-Tube.
