Hey Nemo, I feel slighted. I have a 336 so marked in 44mag. That doesn't have any 3's in it at all. Ha good to see you are back on more these days

I just picked up a 336 (.30-30) a couple of weeks ago - it's a W version with the cheaper wood, but it's pretty much identical to a 336 I bought almost 40 years ago. That was my first rifle, aside from an old .22LR that my Dad had. Well over 35 years ago, I sold that gun - unfired - to one of my younger brothers. He still has the gun - and it has still NEVER been fired. He has it as a part of a pretty large collection. I've asked him over and over if I could buy that 336 back from him, but he has politely refused for several years. So, I saw the new 336W on sale at Dick's and decided that I'd just replace that old gun. And I made sure that I put some rounds through it so it doesn't end up like the first one - a virgin after 40 years!! (But probably worth a lot more than the new one).

Wonder how I missed this thread. Maybe because its only 120 pages long? Anyway, the first gun I ever bought was a Marlin 336CS in .35 Rem. I got it in '79 or '80. I haven't shot it in a long time but it's still in my safe.

Her is my baby, it is a 1963 marlin marauder in 35 remington.

Marlin 336Y with XS Lever Scout

I just picked this gun up... sort of. I bought it in October and took it out to sight it in with iron sights. I couldn't get a round in the chamber.

I took it back to the store and had them send it back to Marlin. Eight weeks later it is back despite a couple of dinks in the wood and a missing scope mount knob I like it.

I put an XS Lever Scout mount on it with a Bushnell TRS 25 red dot sight on it.

5 + 1 rounds of 30-30. I may end up putting a Skinner peep sight on it.

This looks like the same gun?? That's real pretty. Seemingly in the $450 range.

Well way back in the beginning of this thread our host started is a couple of lousy pictures of my lever. I had it out of the safe giving it a cleaning and lube job a couple of weeks ago. Took some better shots. 4X Weaver.

Is it hard to convert a 336C into a straight wood stock?

I want to go with a slightly shorter LOP than came with the 336C. I know I could just mount a youth stock. However, if I'm going to change stocks, I'm thinking of going with a straight stock (I like the look).

What parts do I need to change? Where can I get the parts?

I'm having a helluva time deciding what style of olde skool rifle is sexier. A wooden stocked bolt action (kinda like my '49 Husqy)? Or a wooden stocked 336 (kinda like my '57 Sears/Marlin)?.....

At the very least you would need to change out the stock, lever & upper/lower tang. Better to maybe find a straight stocked 336, they had one once called the "Texan" I believe.

You need the Stock, lever, and trigger plate. If you are real handy the Parts can be modified into A straight stock. (REAL HANDY )

Nem. Any competent gunsmith can chop A marlin. My local GS had mine done in 2 days for $100.
You can Have Skinner sights and A scout scope. Use QRW rings. Best of both worlds.

With all of this talk about subpar rifles after Marlin changed hands, what do you guys think of the 336 Big Loop? I think it would make a nice, quick rifle.

What do you guys know about them?

How much power does the .30-30 lose w/ the 18.5" barrel compared to the 20"?

just my observation..........Big loops are OK if you have long arms..........the bigger the lever loop the farther the throw for your arm IE longer reach.......why would you want to reach farther away from the gun...coming back is same as standard lever for your arm.
