So with the climate today somewhat tense in America and many firearm and Ammo shortages, I have noticed something interesting in the firearms trading sites such as Armslist. At least around here, it seems like a very high percentage of people are specifically looking for Glocks and they are selling for almost 1.5x the cost of new. I don’t see that trend for many of the other firearms, at least not as much of a increase. Now maybe it’s something to do with Glocks are less in stock than other brands, but I don’t think so. I think we’re seeing that when people truly do think there may be a real SHTF event the answer to the age old question of what gun do you want is a Glock (for many). I think we are seeing strong evidence of that right now. I am solely talking about handgun. I know there are fanboys and haters and I get both arguments, but I myself switched to Glock about a year ago because of their simplicity and aftermarket and because many pdw carbines and pistols use Glock mags. Interested in others’ thoughts related to this.

Hard to argue with that logic. When facing the prospect of civil unrest, potential reduction of law enforcement services, volatile economy, an election that could have a profound impact in the near future, pandemic, etc., who wouldn't want a handgun that is simple, reliable, accurate enough, easy to operate, and easy to fix?

I understand the appeal of Glocks. I've owned several over a 30 year period, and still have several. They aren't my favorites, but they seem to fit the needs of the times now, more than ever.

It's the Honda Civic, the classic Timex, the Chevy Nova of striker fired guns. It has name recognition, appeal and a good price point, hence there's an active market for them. A good bit of the public would be hard pressed to name another semi-auto brand. This has nothing to do with whether they are the best. They take a licking but keep on ticking.

It could also have something to do with name recognition. There are a lot of new buyers right now and if you know little to nothing about guns you will gravitate to names you have heard. Everyone has heard Glock but if you mention a CZ to them they might not have a clue what you’re talking about.

For many people any polymer pistol is a Glock. Other than that it's all in the advertising.

There are much better, IMHO, polymer pistols out there than Glock, and they cost less.

My shooting buddies son just HAD to have a Glock...because that's what his buddies had and that's all he knew. He grossly overpaid to get that Glock. He could have gotten an XDM or a Canik at a much lower price. But the social pressure to have that Glock was intense.....to him.

This is what I was thinking. So many people think a black pistol is a "Glock" in the same way that a facial tissue is a "Kleenex".

I've been watching quite a few crime shows lately. One was a murder using a handgun. Firearm pictured and called "40 caliber Glock" and being myself saying "that's a Walther." Glock is synonymous with plastic pistol to the less informed. I have had my schedule full of students the past few months and I have had to explain this more than once.

I agree with those who have said that a large part of this is probably new gun buyers ("new buyers," not "buyers of new guns"). Their knowledge of brands is limited and, if there's one thing they've heard, it's that a Glock is reliable.

My LGS just told me he sold an online Glock gen.3 model 19 with NO MAGAZINE to a customer in California for OVER 800.00 .

That speaks volumes to me,I am happy I have what I hope I do NOT need !

I too have notice the selling prices of Glocks going through the roof on Gunbroker and Armslist.
There's a lot of folks building Polymer 80 (Ghost Gun) Glocks now as well. Glock parts kits (complete slide and frame parts) are selling for big $.

I have somehow wound up with 7 Glocks in my collection.

My LGS always has Glocks and they appear to move very slowly compared to almost everything else except 1911's. The 1911's he has are fairly expensive but the Glocks are not. I notice the Glocks on the way over to the Sigs

Glock has brilliantly maintained brand recognition, despite perfectly equivalent products from M&P & XD.

Whoever's doing their market strategery better be raking it in, because they are winning big time.

"Just get a Glock." No wonder so many people are.

Remember that sequel movie to The Fugitive, with Wesley Snipes, Tommy Lee Jones, and Robert Downey Jr? Jones talks about his Glock and how it will run wet, full of mud etc. Then he says "Everything else is just a nickel plated sissy pistol!"

It always drives me nuts, any black pistol is a glock and apparently in the movie "end of watch" any third rate piece of crap knife is a "spyderco tactical knife". Smh.

My LGS had a stack of a dozen Glocks behind the counter while his display was looking pretty sparse. I asked him why he didn't put them out and he said it was because he was getting flagrant and obscene money for shipping them out west, Oregon, Cali, Washington, etc...cant blame him.

I chose glocks because I grew up and around people who regarded them as junk, old timers, uncle, etc... once a game warden who was talking with my dad was complaining about his absolutely hunk of **** Glock 9mm. Said that the Glock was awful and the 9mm was useless. When I used to browse through gun mags as a kid I always dismissed the Glock articles and Ads, Just blind adherence to the grown folks, then I was at a gun show, a lil older, a lil wiser, and I saw a table full of just Glocks. For some reason that table spoke to me, I went against the grain and picked up the Glock and never looked back.....

It is interesting for sure. Over the years, if I was ever around anyone that new nothing about firearms and for some reason they asked me what my hobbies were, If i mentioned I like target shooting, they would always ask me the same thing. Do you own a Glock? It makes sense. So many military contracts, security Guard Contracts etc for so many years. and for many thousands of shooters learn from only this one Pistol. That's all they know and they spread the word. I doubt the average Joe, could not name three other Pistols. I think the top brands sold to new shooters would be the Glock and any Taurus. In a military town, I would say Glock or Sig.
Not to mention that every time I walk into a LGS, and just want to look around, some new Clerk will try and show me a Glock.

Glocks were popular in the gang/street culture mostly due to rap music spreading the name and image.
LE adoption dispelled the myth that the Glock grip angle was unnatural.
The popularity of the Glock in movies and TV have replace the Beretta 92 (because they are easy to convert to functioning with blanks)
All the above has made the image of a Glock a mainstay in video gaming.

With new shooters entering the "gun game", it is only natural that Glock heads their list...much like Honda Civic is a popular first car with teens
