Rimfire Prove It *Reboot*?

For those of us who don't usually shoot iron sights (me, if nobody else), how do you know when your aperture is too big/small, and how does that relate to your front sight and target?

So the aperture I was referring to was the front. Personal preference, some like a small white ring around bull some like no white edge. My Rem 541T has a front 'sight tunnel' that holds changeable aperture disks. For target shooting the rear aperture is usually the smallest that let's enough light through.
My competition pellet rifle has iris adjustable front and rear. Like a camera lens I can dial either to a range of openings. The front is clear with a black inner ring the rear is just a regular peep opening. Depending on lighting I can use the rear adjustment as a focus for the front.
These ain't your Daisy bb gun iron sights.

I’m headed to a family funeral tomorrow but still gonna try to squeeze range day in. I need to shoot at least one. Great shooting so far all, I’m betting none of our eyes have improved since last go-round.

Range was empty at 8 so I got a quick chance to shoot.

Wowzers! As I was packing up from my range session today I was wondering if anyone had posted a perfect score yet. Pretty darn close there.

I had a ball with my Remington Model 514. I bought it in college (way too many years ago to contemplate) for $75. It has been used almost exclusively on soup cans although I did shoot a few squirrels with it back when I actually worked in the woods instead of behind a desk. Never really knew what it could do, but today I got some idea. Not a great score, but I was pleased nonetheless given I've always considered it a minute-of-Campbell's gun. If I could substitute one of my sighting targets I'd up my score by 10, but that would be cheating. Plain old Remington green box High Velocity ammo shot off my portable shooting bench and homemade front and rear bags with the factory open sights. I may try to better my score next weekend.

FINALLY, I got the chance to shoot this after the range closed (I was RSO'ing) today. DSCN2797.JPG
Shot the 4 rifles I'd selected back in #47. Only difference is that the Rem. Model 5 didn't get the bore-snake treatment as it was catching on something in the chamber and fraying and getting stuck. Guess I need a new one. Never the less, I pretty much followed the plan: sight in and "season" with the RWS Rifle Target ammo, then shoot the 12 shots for score. I was pleasantly surprised that all of the guns pretty much like the ammo during sight-in.

Tried the two autoloaders first. The "FrankenRuger" shot well until I knocked it off the rest after group #2. That obviously knocked the cheap scope reticle off and I didn't compensate enough. Didn't help that the crosshairs are thick enough, even at 9X, to cover the 10 circle. DSCN2799.JPG It shot great groups, showing it SHOULD be able to shoot a clean score, but not today. The Marlin 7000T did pretty well, too. I haven't shot that in YEARS, so I'm pretty happy with that result.

Then I moved to the 2 bolt-actions. The old Marlin 25N only has a 4x scope on it and the crosshairs pretty much covered the white dot in the center, so I'm overall happy with that one as well. I did to some trigger work on the Rem. Mod. 5, dropping the trigger from 5+ lbs to just over 3# right before I shot this target. I believe it helped. Overall, I'm happy with today's effort.

I went out & shot this yesterday. I'm not posting the targets because I am frustrated & embarrassed. I am getting my wife to make me an eye appointment. It appears to be time for some glasses. I shot my 2 iron sighted .22's at 25 yards. Didn't do the greatest but oh well. Then I shot a few rounds through my model 60 with a 4x scope at 25 to check zero. It stacked 3 rounds dead center. I moved out to 50 & the target circles looked like blurs through the 4x scope. I was good at 50 yards with this scope when I put it on the rifle 9 or 10 years ago. I did something similar to this for another forum where I participate then. The target was slightly larger but it was shooting from field positions. I may pick up a higher power scope to put on at least one of them but I believe it is time for some glasses.

More fine shooting! I may have to go borrow my 802 back from my buddy and try this again lol.

Usually when I notice i need a new contact prescription it's doing something with the a rifle, It's often worth asking the optometrist to take that into account.... At least in my experience.
One of the more annoying effects of having a minor astigmatism in my right eye is that unless I specifically ask them not to, as often as not optometrists will prescribe a slightly more powerful lens for that eye than is necessary. I found the messes with looking through magnified optics

Eyes are tough.
Had right eye cataract corrected several years ago with a corrected lense. My eyes are very bad -7.5 so they corrected it but slightly under 20/20 so I could still read. My other eye I wear a contact in. For iron sights, targets were blurs. Talk to my eye doctor and she gave me a .75 contact for my right eye. Now I can shoot irons but need reading glasses for everything but loading the gun.

I do have an astigmatism in my right eye. I have also been a little near sighted for years. About 15 years ago I started using readers to be able to read prints & the labels on ductwork. My wife had made me an appointment to go a couple of months ago but I had to cancel because I had to go out of town for work. I may pick up a inexpensive 3x9 scope to put on the old Glenfield model 25 & try again with it & the Marlin model 60 with the 4x32 scope. The Glenfield 75C I really don't want to scope as it is short & handy. Seems like it would spoil it. The problem is the rear sight on it moves so easily in the notch it makes it difficult to adjust properly (I try to move it a little, it moves a lot). Besides I want at least one of them I can use to work with the kids on shooting iron sights.

I'd like to get the 82G back out and shoot a clean target.
But ... I've got a week and a half of work before 17 days in Alaska. We'll see if I can squeeze in one range day.

Late to the party but I was in the middle of moving. Still unpacking but will dig out the .22s first. Planning to shoot my 10/22 with 4x scope and my Remington model 34 for my iron sighted entry

Good shooting!

That Henry did pretty well! The one my buddy has is a blast, But it's not horribly accurate..... Or at least an our hands it's not horribly accurate lol, yours did much better.

I am not handicapped and as long as my health allows me to shoot offhand, I will continue doing so. I had not done serious offhand shooting for almost a year and it showed. I shot two Anschutz mil trainers offhand at 25 yards with Aguila SV and enjoyed it despite the poor results. I will practice again and see that I can keep the shots in the black in a few months. Humbling results.

Shot my 10/22 carbine with Simmons 22mag 4x scope. Completely stock rifle apart from some light polishing of trigger components. Not sure I’ve ever actually shot it off a bench before, it’s a good one. I feel like I could get a perfect score on this with more magnification so This has made up my mind that I need a more powerful scope and a better trigger group.
Shot it twice

No fancy target rifle, lol. JC Higgins Model 31, Federal Auto-Match ammo, 25 yds. Hot day, couldn't keep the sweat out of my eyes. Hot babe on the next bench; no excuse tho. :D Score 110.
