10mm with light rail for home defense

I gotta laugh when I hear these comments about how big and bad the 10mm is. "like using a bazooka". Come on. How many of these people have even shot a 10mm let alone own one. Yeah it can be loaded to 357 specs but it can also be loaded down. With off the shelf loads. That's its beauty.

Unless you've shot one extensivlely or own a 10mm you're showing your ignorance.

Ask someone who owns 3 and reloads for them.

Ahhh, the typically BS overpenetration argument.

I hear it but when I talk to (a) actual police officers involved in shootings; and (b) shooters who own a 10mm gun, the argument becomes moot.

Bottom line, if you have to shoot the BG, as long as you are COM, most handgun calibers are going to do their job.

I have heard of more than a few stories wear layers of winter clothes stop rounds and the attacker keeps on attacking.

And for home defense, the G20 until I get here:

With slugs.

I agree, I'm a big fan of the 10mm and have two of my own. Most factory loadings aren't much more powerful that a stiff .40 S&W. Yes, you can load it way up, but few factory offerings push the original Norma limits. Even if they did, who would argue the .357 is too much gun for personal defense?

The 10mm is an outstanding personal defense round.

Locks are the best home defense and a 10mm is like using a bazooka in parking lot to get into the car you locked yourself out of.

You will most likely hurt as many as you are protecting by trying that. Not a good option imho.
What are you guys shooting? How is shooting a 10mm projectile that will penetrate 14" and expand to an inch in 4 layer denim covered gelatin anything at all like a bazooka? Its about the same as what my 9mm round does, except it expands .3" inch wider or so.

My nightstand gun. G20 with 180 Gold Dot JHP loaded over Powerpistol. Won't knock the house down but will do the job.

Glock light on the rail.

I might add that when I hear things go bump or bark in the night I don't automatically go sweeping the perimeter of my property with a loaded firearm.
I use a Surefire flashlight just like anybody with any common sense and a reduced level of complete paranoia.

If I KNOW a threat is imminent I will draw down with a weapon and use the light to disorient the threat.
I would rather have somebody stop what they are doing and leave in a hurry or better yet lie down and wait for the Police to arrive then out and out kill them.

As stated, weapon mounted lights aren't overkill and the 10mm ain't no bazooka.

Oh yeah, my loved ones that choose not to engage in any mayhem head for our safe room.
If multiple family memebers are checking seperate areas we keep in visual contact at all times, this is simple tactics that if you aren't following then you are better off leaving the checking to the Po-Po.
If you allow your family to wander around the house while you are checking on something potentially dangerous or fatal shame on you.

about the original post:

if you like 1911 platforms you should just drop a 400corbon barrel into one. in my opinion that beats shooting a 10mm glock.

A weapon mounted light isn't going to intimidate anyone, they'll assume you have a flashlight and nothing more... they'll be blinded by the light. If you're trying to intimidate someone without using deadly force, you would be better off with a light in your weak hand held high with your weapon in the other held close to your chest in a protective stance.

Every time you investigate a bump in the night you escort your family to a safe room? You never check on them while they're asleep?

LOL

Id judge "too much gun" based on the surroundings. if I diddnt have kids in the house, I would use an AK mabey for HD.. my neighbors live a mile away thru lotsa woods and over hills.

but I use a 9mm..
I also have a tac light, nothing mounted on my guns tho.. I wont do that, for the exact reasons sturm sited. I dont want to point my gun at stuff to see it.. using a tac light in one hand has more bennefits for me inside the home, you can peek corners easier, flash it easier (so not to give away position) and not make yer gun a target.. its just more practical and tactical for me to not have it mounted.

If I go outside, I carry a 3,000,000 candlepower portable spotlight, cant mount that on much... but I can se verry verry far!..lol

The fix for "over penetration" isn't a caliber or ammo choice; It's awareness, planning, and practice. Over penetration isn't an equipment problem, it's a usage problem. Knowing the possible effects of a miss or a pass-through is part of defensive shooting just as much as it is a part of hunting, if not more so. You have to know your homes layout, where everyone is likely to be, and practice taking firing positions that won't put rounds through people who are not threats.

Practicing firing positions where you might need to shoot through barriers to stop a threat before it can harm your family might not be a bad idea either. Once you've verified a threat and moved your family into a defensive position, if the treat decides to come after you, you need to be prepared for that too.

Once you trained for the conditions, you are free to use the most effective round available to stop the threat, thus minimizing the threats danger to you. If you use a marginal round, you're more likely to be injured or killed by the threat and where does that leave the rest of your family? At the mercy of someone who's just put you down. It also leaves them free to do it to another family.

My preference is a 12 guage pump shot gun with slugs and a weapon mounted light with enough spill that I can point it at the floor and still illuminate an entire room (in this case a Streamlight M3). I choose it because a long gun is harder to lose control of than handgun and generally more precise on target. It's also quick to deploy able to get on target very quickly. Your situation may be different than mine and it might not be viable for you. But that's my thinking on the subject.
