Hey all,
Seen it mentioned a few times but no thread directly addressing this.
All ammo prices are high right now as we all know, 30-30 seems to be especially high and in great demand. I can understand that there are a lot of deer rifles that may be the only gun someone has and they want some cartridges . it seems like the old traditional cartridges would be somewhat less affected but I'm seeing gunbroker prices of well over $100 for a box of 20 and there are bids on it. Seems the 30-30 ammo prices exceed many others that I would think would be more in demand.

What's going on with that?

Only 1 LGS to me has it and it was $60 for a box of PPU soft points. Glad I bought up all the .30-30 Federal HammerDown I could get locally
I would have a hard time supporting that LGS in the future. My dad was at an auction this morning and 30-30 went for $62 or $63 a box for Core-Lokt. $100/box? That’s the same price as Swift A-Frame 375 H&H. I don’t care if there is a panic. That’s just dumb.

I got some Federal 30-30s a little while back at Dunhams for $23.99 I think. I saw 308 and 30.06 reloads sell recently at an auction for $40 a box.

A $1.15 to $6 per round....there is a lot of silliness going today

Looked again just now and the cheapest was $2.50 a round which is what it was when last I checked several days ago. If I were in need of 30-30 ammo I'd have jumped on less than $1.50 a round. Looks like someone did!

The ammo problem is what finally motivated me to start casting my own bullets. My casting bench is finished and if it weren't rainy today I'd have started. Maybe next weekend.

Before this craziness, I had made the decision to shoot up all my factory ammo this hunting season and go strictly to my reloads for hunting. Glad I made that decision to reload all my hunting ammo. I'd be pissed right now to have to pay crazy prices or not find any to hunt with!

With the scare being that this that and the other will be banned it’s almost like some folks are stocking up on what they think is safe from legislative actions.

And that almost doesn't make sense, but it almost does. (And if you can make sense of that statement, you win the internet for the day.)

You would think that people would be buying up all the semi-auto ammo they could (they are), and leaving stuff like 30-30 alone. On the other hand, if legislation is inevitable (and I'm not going to go into that discussion), then one might be buying up all the 30-30 and 38 spl one can find predicting that that is where the next run/shortage will be.

Good thinking, just loaded 150rnds with a lee 170gn fp for only a few cents each.
Crazy prices for factory, part of my initial interest in 30-30 was that a box of factory ammo was only $15, guess those days are gone.

You gonna take the jar of peanut m&ms that the kids ate the chocolate off of, or are you going for the mystery deal behind curtain number 4?
Curtain #4 is a 20 round box of ppu 30-30 in a bizarre weight for $35 per round!!! A winner! Lol
Definitely taking #4! That’s $700! Unless you mean I have to pay for it. If that’s the case I’m just gonna take the “win” and go home.

I just took a load of orphan ammo to LGS. At breakfast a buddy was wondering if there was any 30-30 to be had, and I went to the truck and got him a box of new Federals. I had paid $17 for them in 2016, but had traded the Marlin 336 they were intended for. He had found (!) a 30-30 rifle in a hay field and had no ammo. He owes me a box of 308 or 45-70 when prices settle down a bit. We'll get by with a little help from our friends.

Would like to know how that bullet will perform on deer.
While I have plans to I’ve not had the opportunity to try l but I have read good things from others who have used it successfully. Seems that softer alloys are recommended for those applications.
I’m hoping to get a chance to shoot some small game with them soon. I think they will punch a .30 cal hole in a rabbit without much meat damage.

I grabbed up a bunch at Walmart back in the summer. Good stuff, still prefer Hornady Lever stuff though and I reload as well.

The .30-30 is probably the most popular rifle cartridge in the US and hunting season just ending. I bought a couple of boxes of Winchester just a week or so ago at Gander for pretty much the regular price, $24, premium ammo. I expect the ammo companies will try to catch up on the pistol/revolver and bulk ammo before returning their attention to rifle hunting ammunition.

That’s quite a find. Sucks someone lost it. But it happens.

Last 30-30 I bought were Leverevolution 160 gr for around $25.00/box. I was in the hospital recovering from Covid, found and paidonline, and my wife picked them up from Academy. That was in October.

As tempting it is to sell off some 30-30 for a tidy profit, who knows how long it'll be before it's in stock again, or what new prices/taxes/bg checks/internet sales limitations might be in place.
Guess I'll just hold onto my 100+ boxes for now.
