So this evening I was almost caught with my pants around my ankles, figuratively of course. I stopped into my favorite watering hole after a long day at work to have a Guinness before heading home and had a potential dangerous encounter. The bar is located in a very dark and quiet neighborhood and being Sunday night there was hardly anyone out. I parked my car down the street from the bar and took off my ccw since we can't carry in bars here in New Mexico.

As I was walking up the street I heard a voice call out to me and I turned to see a most unsavory looking Hispanic man dressed all in black walking towards me from out of the shadows. I kept walking and then he said "you have flat tire" I stopped and turned to my car and then as he came up he said "just messin' with ya" and then lifted up his sweatshirt and began to pull something out from underneath. A sudden rush of dread filled my head as I was gunless to defend myself. He then proceeded to pull two full bottles of alcohol out and showed them to me. He asked if I wanted to buy them and I said no and started walking away.

He followed me but I made sure he was in view so I kind of walked next to him not letting him get behind me. I didn't trust him one bit and he started asking for money and I kept telling him I only had a couple dollars. He followed me into the bar and then told the bartender I was getting him a beer. I told the bartender I wasn't and the guy got agitated and the bartender asked him to leave. I met up with a buddy of mine and had my beer and left. I was a little worried the guy would be waiting for me outside so I left with my friend so he could watch my back.

Anyway I feel pretty angry about this whole thing, I know its State law that you can't carry in bars but I could have easily been a statistic tonight. Supposing the guy had pulled a gun or knife on me instead of some bottles, which themselves can be used as weapons I may have needed to defend myself. I had my hand on my Spyderco the whole time ready to pull it, but still a knife to a gunfight isn't exactly a fair fight. I'm also a black belt in Karate and have been doing Aikido for more than a few years, but still if he had pulled a gun I would have been pretty defenseless.

Well I thought I'd share this experience with everyone since it got me a a little rattled. I don't plan on breaking the law and carrying from now on to bars but now I'm really wishing the State would relax its restrictions on this law. It really would have been crappy to become a statistic fifteen feet from my car where my ccw had to be left behind because I was walking to a bar:(

Then again maybe I'm just being paranoid:eek:

scary story but it sounds like you played everything right.
Not much you can do if they wont allow firearms into a bar.

You could encourage the bar owner to have a "check at the door" option, if such is legal in your area.

If I were trying to avoid trouble, I would not select a dark, quiet, lonely neighborhood to frequent at night for a drink.

Good point about the counter-productive restriction on CC, but are you willing to repeat this experience (or worse) or would it be prudent to find a different bar?

Your got it right btg3, avoiding the situation which creates the potential
hazard in the first place is the best course of action.

Pay more attention to what you already KNOW.
a very dark and quiet neighborhood
That way, you tilt the field in your direction when dealing with the inevitable "surprises" that come with self-defense in a world of predators. Glad everything went okay.

You're not. The thing that stood out for me in your story is something I have trouble with myself.

I heard a voice call out to me and I turned...unsavory looking man...walking towards me...I kept walking and then he said "you have flat tire" I stopped and turned...

When I first read your post and got to this point I admit I was thinking, "Maybe a little paranoid - the man was just being helpful and wanted tell him about his flat tire."

He knew from plenty of street experience and instinct how to "disarm" your "spidy sense'. I too have found myself listening to BS designed to do the same thing.

I'm not sure what the answer is. You can't walk around paranoid - and you can't let your guard down. I guess somewhere in between is the definition of "condition yellow". Still - I find myself occasionally empathizing with a good sob story, or reacting unguardedly to what appears to be an offer of help. But I'm learning....

Sorry but I have zero tolerance for someone that would drink and carry/use a gun. When the alcohol comes out, the guns get put away.

I'm glad you are now safe, in the future you may want to find a better place to hang out.

I've always wanted to say this since I see it all the time regarding gun laws:

You should move to MA where you can carry in bars!

(of course, should you actually have to use your firearm, you will probably be getting arrested)

Dope

What about pepper spray? Or TASER? ASP? Second place to firearms, but,
A) Will the local law allow it's posession in a place that serves open alcohol?
B) What is the law about use of said objects in self defense in ANY state of impairment?
I think I remember reading about a cop who had to use deadly force after half a beer about 2 hours prior, and almost lost his case due to that. I may misremember that one - anyone heard that story?

Glad you're Ok, scary situation. Where in Santa Fe were you, if I may ask? (Note: Santa Fe has "light control ordinanaces" that limit how and how much light may be used in a given area, got to have that "old world charm", don'tcha know -)

When we moved to Santa Fe from NoVA among the things I did was research the local crimes stats, which are pretty mild compared to the DC area. What I didn't realize is that while SF has a population of ~68,000 (vs a million plus for Fairfax County), it's a much smaller area, but when stuff happens, it happens pretty close to home, even though we're in a 'nice' neighborhood. There's not that many lowlifes here, but given the pop. size and more compact geographic area, the likelihood of meeting a few is pretty good. My wife used to be somewhat ambivalent about me CCWing, now she encourages it . . .

I disagree. Having a drink or two doesn't turn everyone into a drunken, irresponsible, irrational lout.

I've learned that it is hard to run out of a back door when an enraged husband is running through the front door after being caught with your pants down.

Biker

While having a beer or two seems reasonable, I would rather no one drinking carry, especially in bars. Too many idiots that get too wasted to be trusted.

We are very lucky to live in a country where, on a daily basis we are only committing multiple minor infractions in the "LAW".

People need to start thinking what they will do when the laws are a LOT more strict, and the "danger" is much greater, as it is coming.

I love the term "Law abiding gun owner", that really cracks me up.

The simple solution here is to not stop at the bar for a drink.

If there's a local crowd you hang out with, that's one thing. But it seems like you were going alone or meeting one friend there.

For the price of a single beer at a bar, you could buy a 6-pack and drink at home. Turn off the lights, light a dozen cigarettes, and have your buddy pee on the floor - voila, just like the bar!

No skanky wimminz to take home and bang like a helmet wearin' retard on a cheap drumset, though.

Wow, what kind of bars do you go to? My local bar has $1.25 pints of domestic beer (including Yeungling!) all the time. Can't buy anything other than a 24oz Natty Light for that.

As for the encounter, I've made a habit of stopping people at a distance verbally. I don't know them, they don't know me, we have nothing to talk about. Sure, I come off as a rude person sometimes. I don't lose any sleep over it.

OP disappeared from this thread. Think he was looking for a different response.

Lots of alarms going off here ... him seeing where you parked (re: flat tire comment) and there being a firearm in it is not the least of which.

Get yourself some mace or a taser that you can carry when you can't carry a gun.

A good knife if you have the training.
