I'll play.

Big Game - 700 in 7mm RM

Home defense - 12 ga. 870 - 18.5" barrel

Turkey - 12 ga. 870 - 28' barrel

CC - S&W Mod. 66 - 2.5" barrel (38/357)

Small game - scoped 10/22 take down

Range - 700 - .270 win.

Varmint - Ruger American 22-250

Too bad this thread is only about firearms, as I would have included a bow for small game. And although small game can be a bit more challenging with a bow, it's very doable if the bow is sighted in properly, and the shooter stays proficient.

GS
A bow is a very powerful and undervalued tool in general, but for small game it is totally overlooked. I have bagged more cottontails with a bow than I have with a shotgun. Simply because they are so quiet, and have a long effective range. Kick big ears up and watch him run. Wherever he stops he gets shot. If he stops with his buddy then both get shot, often without spooking.

-Big Game: Bow, Marlin 7-08 if I didn't own a bow
-Turkey: Bow
-Home Def: Glock 26, or whatever is closest
-CC: Glock 26
-Small Game: Birds : Mossberg 500, Anything else : Savage .17HMR
-Range: Self built AR 15
-Varmints: .17 HMR

Big Game: Weatherby V2 .30-06
Turkey: Ithaca 37 Featherweight
Home Def: Ruger P90 or Mossy 500 (if long guns only)
CC: Ruger SR9c
Small Game: Ruger American Rimfire .22
Range: AK74
Varmints: Mossberg MVP Predator .223/5.56

+1. I always carry a small game head with me when hunting deer.

Fella's;

Big game: So many choices, but the current go-to gun is a custom left handed 6.5 X 55mm Swedish Mauser with a Zeiss 3.5-10X mil-dot scope.

Turkey: I only hunt them on the internet, but it's a target-rich environment.

Home Defense: 12 gauge, short barrel, long mag, and a light.

Concealed Carry: H&K USPc in .40, which also doubles as home defense

Small game: CZ452 American in .22lr with a Nikon Monarch 3.3-10X mil-dot.

Range: Anything I want to take. Private 1000 yard range out my back door.

Varmints: Another category with a fair number of possibilities, but given a single choice - CZ527 lefty in .223 with a second copy of the small game scope on it.

900F

Big Game: 1898 30-40 Krag carbine
Turkey: 12 ga, shot gun (I envy those that can use .22 lr)
Home defense: 1911 auto-ordnance pistol
Concealed carry: Kel-tec .380
small game: Ruger 10-22
Range: All of above and below plus others
Varmints: Ruger mini-14

Actually I am some what somewhat unhappy with this list, as I often use other guns for the stated purpose.

Ill assume by big game you mean North American big game? or deer sized game?

A 243 is not adequate for my definition of big game.

Big Game: 45/70 (It is the best bet I have for "real" big game. Works for medium game too) Winchester 1892 .44 Mag if big game starts at whitetail deer size.
Turkey: 20 ga BPS w/ 3" No. 6
Home defense: Winchester 1892 .44 and Smith Model 60
Concealed carry: Smith 60 and Smith 38
small game: Winchester 75 and 20 ga BPS
Range: All of above and below plus others
Varmints: Winchester 75

Big Game: Gunsite scout in .308

-Turkey: My bow

-Home Def: AR15

-CC: S&W Shield

-Small Game: Ruger 10/22

- Range - Ruger MkII

-Varmints: 17HMR. I own a savage, so I guess that.

I answered based off what I own, but most of what I own is the result of years of shooting so it would be what I would pick anyway. Also, I could use my scout for at least 4 of those categories if push came to shove.

Some I have, some I don't, but if I did certain types of hunting and had an unlimited budget for at least one NFA item, here's what my list would look like.

  • Big game - .30/06, very suitable for leopard and all thin-skinned, non-dangerous game ANYWHERE with the possible exceptions eland and giraffe.
  • Dangerous game - .375 H&H. Perhaps a bit marginal for elephant, but it's on the right side of the margin.
  • Turkey - Target grade AR-pattern .223 rifle. (If legal - otherwise, Benelli M1S90)
  • Home defense - HKMP5SD. Legal here with the right paperwork, all it takes is patience for a pre-86 version to come on the market, and a BIG bunch of greenbacks.
  • Concealed Carry - S&W 340Sc .357 with Crimson Trace laser grips - my "always" gun. (Sometimes an S&W 1911 Sc, depending on the day's apparel)
  • Small game - Benelli M1S90
  • Range - Custom match-grade M1A.
  • Varmints - Target grade AR-pattern .223 rifle.

-Big Game: .270 bolt
-Medium Game: .243 bolt
-Turkey: 12 ga
-Home Def: Suppressed AR15 SBR with des/illum or G17 with des/illum
-CC: Bersa Thunder 9
-Small Game: 10-22
-Range: Everything
-Varmints: .223 bolt

Ok, I'm in too:
Plinking and small game- Henry 22 Carbine Large Loop Lever
Deer in OH or on base- H&R Ultra Slugger Thumbhole 20ga
Deer where rifles are aloud- 98 Mauser in .257Roberts
Varmint/Predator- Built an AR for this in .223
Long range shooting maybe a match or three- Building a .260 AR for this.
Carry gun- RI 1911
Home defense? 2 German Shephards, and any of the above oh yeah and those not listed. And of course my daughters who each have as many guns in their rooms as I do. I think I got that covered.

I'm constantly going over what my ultra-efficient gun collection will be. My thoughts this week.

Small game (flying and non-flying): The 20 ga 870 I've had for 23 years.

Pest control: Something in .410

Close range big game, non-flying small game, HD: A short barreled pump action 12 ga
with sights and/or optics ready

Big Game at a distance: Ruger Guide rifle in .30-06

Handgun: A good D/A revolver in .44 mag

light recoiling fun rifle: Undecided
