Anyone change their minds on the .45GAP

When the .45GAP first came out my first thought was "why". I like .45acp and didn't see the point. If I want smaller I am more than happy with either .40S&W or 9mm. I also had concerns that the new caliber may go the way of 10mm pretty quickly.

However, I am starting to wonder if maybe Glock had more in mind than sheer vanity. Several other manufacturers now offer guns in this caliber so I'm starting to think it may stick around. I've been reading in gun mags (dangerous I know) that accuracy and power are up there with .45acp levels (the .45GAP is basically loaded to +P levels to reach it).

So, I'm wondering. Is there anyone out there who was at first opposed to the .45GAP who is starting to have second thoughts?


PS- anyone that owns one, how is the recoil? I find 9mm to be a short, sharp shock, but easy due to being pretty light. The .45acp is much heavier, but easy since it is a much slower push. The .40S&W is kind of the worst of both worlds as it is heavy and a sharp recoil (but in most guns it isn't anything near uncomfortable- just a bit so in comparison to .45acp or 9mm). It seems to me that being a high pressure round like the 9mm or .40S&W and a heavy round like the .45acp the new .45GAP may do this even more. I'm sure in medium sized guns it would be quite comfortable, but how is it in the smaller guns it was designed for?
 
I wasn't opposed to it - I just didn't see much point to it. However, I've changed my mind on that. It allows more compact guns to have a full-power .45 load when they'd be too small overall for the .45 ACP, and that's a Good Thing, IMHO. I'm looking forward to seeing the Springfield XD in .45 GAP. Should be very interesting!

FWIW....my experience with the .40sw was similar to yours, based on that CZ40. However, after shooting an SA XD-40 I'm starting to rethink my opinion on that cartridge.

The .40 coming out of that gun was very pleasant....no sharp recoil whatsoever
 
I still see little reason for the 45 GAP other than to market it in areas where military calibers are illegal.

45 GAP, 40 S&W performance with one less round in the magazine. :scrutiny:
 
The purpose of a defensive handgun is to stop an attack. The 40 is so dang close to the .45 and .357 that the purpose of a .45 GAP is moot. I am not a subscriber to bigger bullet = more stopping power. So in my view, the GAP is not needed.
 
I didn't change my mind. I am still not a fan of it but I am hoping that Springfield changes their mind. Here's hoping for an XD in 45 ACP :)
 
I have always wondered why Glock can't reduce the size of their grip. Robar will reduce the grip, so why can't Glock build them that way. :confused:
 
i've been pondering a similar question.. finding a compact .45.. And i have been wondering also if the .45 gap will yield a sharper recoil than the acp, which i would rather avoid.

Can someone please explain what Sabre meant about Robar's grip.. i am not familiar?

and if anyone knows when a new springfield might be available soon, i might consider waiting.
 
As long as I'm not "mixing" brass with someone on the range, the GAP works, after all, it's just a shorter ACP. I doubt it will ever sell that much, but who knows. It works for Glock using their existing frame and they sell enough guns to "muscle" a new caliber/gun combo.

Apparently Kahr is coming out with a 45 ACP, so that's not exactly a "vote of confidence" for the GAP. I suspect they will sell lot's of those.

I've read that Springfield is introducing a micro 1911 in GAP. It would be interesting to hear Tuner's thoughts on whether the shorter case could/would/might improve the relibility of small 1911's?
Or, who cares. ;)
Double stack GAP 1911 might be a nice "grip feel", i.e. Highpower like!? :)
 
From what I've heard the Kahr has been under development well before the GAP came out.

I can think of no good reason that Glock would not release their next gun with an interchangeable backstrap a-la the Walther P99.

They need to do some catch-up to the other mfg's IMHO. Do the backstrap thing and angle off the square slide at the very least. Enlarge the trigger guard slightly? How about going to metal mags and slimming the whole gun down?

There has got to be a next-generation Glock in the works that has at least some of these features.
 
I can't imagine the XD in GAP will be any different in appearance than any other XD. The grips will still be as wide, just not as deep. My mind isn't changed. All it says is that Glock is conceeding that 9mm size bullets can't do the trick (or, trying to play "me too!" in the invent your own cartridge game).

Not exactly. The ACP can be pushed much harder than any factory ammo you can buy. Look at midways manual and there's a lot of upside to the ACP where as the GAP is already there. Think of it like the .45 Colt. Most is underloaded greatly.

That said...
If I could get a pocket gun (think Kahr PM9) in a .45 GAP, I'd buy it and change my mind on it. I know Kahr is coming out with a .45 ACP version, but it won't be as small as the PM9 - but with the GAP it could be.

And they probably won't since Glock is their biggest competitor.

No more so than their decisions to chamber guns in 10mm, 40S&W, 45ACP, etc. All it really says is here's another Glock to buy.

In the end guns are like any other product. If they think they can make money off of it, they'll do it.

It's just like saying someone is a professional. It doesn't mean they're any good at what they do, it just means they're paid for it. ;)
 
According to the Feb 05 issue of Guns Magazine, Springfield Armory is bringing out a 7/8 scale Officer's Model 1911 in .45 GAP.

Did they say how much it'll weigh? If its under 21 oz, I may be in.
 
Yes I did, I used to think it was pointless,

Now I understand the point, so the local range can sell more ammo for their rental guns, and so I can spend time seperating it from the GOOD .45 ACP brass. when I buy the once fired brass from them :barf:

Now in addition to picking out those useless .40 S&W cases that sometimes get stuck in the .45 acp CASES i HAVE TO BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR .45 crEERRRRRgap.

Did I mention I hate this caliber.
 
If you have a .45 acp revolver that uses full moon clips, you can shoot .45 GAP in it. Lighter bullet=less kick. People with bad wrists, the reduced recoil would make such a rig a good choice for them.

Love .45 acp, but can see also the potential advantages of .45 GAP.
