Looking for some data from consumers. Not looking to get into arguments with FFLs. I am asking what are consumers currently paying to transfer guns in their state.

Please vote in the poll and then post what you pay, the name & location of the FFL. This can function as a good resource for other members looking for a transfer dealer in their area and to help people gauge if they are paying a fair price. Thanks for participating.

My usual shop charges $30.

I'm sure if I tried hard enough I could find lower, but I like supporting them. They're good people.
Call me crazy.

Not crazy... My old FFL raised his price and I kept going to him because he was a buddy and took care of me. A good relationship with your FFL is a great thing. IMHO

I voted $10 or under because I believe we shouldn't HAVE to do gun transfers. We transfer cars because it's a priviledge. Keeping and bearing arms is a RIGHT.

Most of the places here are either $25 or $50. I'm assuming the ones that are $50 just don't really want to do it. And that's fine too.

I agree with that. FFLs charging that much really do not want to do the transfers which is fine. Its their business. If their opportunity costs are high because of the time involved in transfers it makes sense not to do them.

Keep voting and please take the time to tell us where you transfer your guns. This could be a great resource for other THR members.

What would you concider to be a fair transfer price for of other Constitutionally protected items like Bibles or newspapers? This is NOT what the Founding Fathers had in mind when they included the 2A.

I agree but unfortunately transfers are a reality which IMHO are not going away.

I voted 16-20 even though my current FFL guy charges only $15
Although I have paid as much as $25 that's my limit.
I say that's my limit because I live in a state(thank God) that is not so over bearing as many others when it comes to firearms.
You know when your dealing with places that have so many hassles and surcharges just for the privledge of getting the firearm transferred to you that almost insures a transfer that is not as cheap as others.
But then we get to dealers who take advantage of this for their gain.
But I guess that's what this system of capitalism is all about and with that in mind until some dealer comes along with the mindset that there is still money to be made in transfers and starts undercutting those that charge a lot more for this service.

While I don't believe that gun sales, ownership, or transfer should be federally regulated, it is. And the time it takes to deal with that regulation is worth something, like about $10.

Never bought a gun that needed a transfer. I also have a C&R, so I don't really need one, unless I want something new.

Could have saved some money had I bought my mother's Christmas present (a Savage Mark II G) at Bud's and then shipped it, but after shipping, tax, and transfer, I felt better just having my local dealer order it straight from Savage, put on their markup, and buying it.

Then I did the math after I got it... I spent an extra $5 to deal with a shop I trust and has a very lenient layaway policy. Oh, well...

Because too many people are making money on them? We could go back to the pre-Clinton days when anyone who wasn't a criminal could get an ffl. Why isn't the NRA or anyone else pushing for this?

Most places here in north Jersey charge $50, there's one older fella whose shop is in his house that charges $25.

I voted under $10. My transfer guy, who shall remain unnamed, charges me nothing. But we do a lot of work for each other.

For me, I charge my shop rate and the average time it takes me to record all the info. My shop rate is $40/hr and it takes me about 25-30 minutes of my time to record the transfer of a firearm from the incoming FFL, the paperwork with the customer and the end transfer on the books to the customer. My transfer fees are therefore $20. There are other dealers in my AO that don't really want to do transfers and they charge as much as $150.

ETA: Oh, and my transfer fee is only on firearms that are going through my books that I'm not actually selling. If I order a firearm for a customer, I work up a fair markup but I don't charge a separate transfer fee for them.

Whoops. The topic title (what do you consider a fair price) and the poll question (what are you paying) tripped me up...

I put $11-15 because I would be willing to pay that. Most gunshops here want $30-60 and I haven't taken them up on it. The FFL listings on Gunbroker say that there are some people in the $25 range near me. Might go for that eventually. For now I am happy with used deals and C&R.

I think that is very sound logic on your part...

free for me, the ffl is a very good friend so he doesn't mind doing a free transfer for me every once in a while

Last time I transferred a gun (about a year ago) it was $50 from several places in Birmingham, AL. Then, only after I'd gotten the gun, I found a guy who will do one for $25.
