Not to be a trivia nut,but Marty Robbins did not do "The Man Who Shot LIberty Valance".That was recorded by Gene Pitney.

Mention of Marty Robbins reminds me of "Big Iron", "Running Gun", "El Paso" (which I hate:fire: ), and several other old gunfighter ballads that won't come to me at the moment.:D

GunGoBoom: I hate to nitpic but I think 'The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia' was done by Vicki Lawrence (of 'The Carol Burnette Show' fame).

I don't know when Vicki Lawrence recorded it, but I know Reba McEntire did. I think that was back in the '90's.

For sure one of my faves is James' Mc Murtry's "Chocktaw Bingo"

And he stopped off in Tushka at that "Pop's Knife and Gun" place
Bought a SKS rifle and a couple a full cases of that steel core ammo
With the berdan primers from some East bloc nation that no longer needs 'em
And a Desert Eagle that's one great big ol' pistol
I mean .50 caliber made by badass Hebrews
And some surplus tracers for that old BAR of Slayton's
Soon as it gets dark we're gonna have us a time

I live just south of Tushka, love the song but the Pop Knife and Gun place is actually in Atoka. I had an old Enfield worked on there, pretty decent place probably will close in the near future, due to newer less grungy competition.

Not the best song I can think of ( since so many good ones have been mentioned already), but here's the chorus of one I keep hearing on the radio.

SUGAR, WE'RE GOING DOWN by FALL OUT BOY

"We're going down, down in an earlier round
And Sugar, we're going down swinging
I'll be your number one with a bullet
A loaded Gun complex, cock it and pull it"

Bubba Shot the Juke Box . . .

"Reckless discharge of a gun - that's what the deputies are claiming."

Bubba answered, "Reckless hell! I hit just where I was aming."

Tigerseye

May be it just me but this song has always made me think of Tanks and Armored personal carriers driving in to battle.

Born to be wild
Get your motor runnin'
Head out on the highway
Lookin' for adventure
And whatever comes our way
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
And explode into space

I like smoke and lightning
Heavy metal thunder
Racin' with the wind
And the feelin' that I'm under
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
And explode into space

Like a true nature's child
We were born, born to be wild
We can climb so high
I never wanna die

Born to be wild
Born to be wild

Am I the only one to think of this song?

Thread Necromancy!

Here's another Bruce Springsteen one - 57 channels and nuthin' on.

Red Hot Chilli peppers - Dani California

Big & Rich

8th of November

Said goodbye to his mamma
As he left South Dakota
To fight for the Red, White, and Blue.
He was nineteen and green with a new M-16
Just doing what he had to do.

He was dropped in the jungle
Where the choppers would rumble
With the smell of napalm in the air.
And the sergeant said, "Look up ahead"

Like a dark, evil cloud
1,200 came down
on him and 29 more.
They fought for their lives
But most of them died
In the 173rd Airborne.

(Chorus)
On the 8th of November,
The angels were crying
As they carried his brothers away.
With the fire raining down
And the Hell all around
There were few men left standing that day.
Saw the eagle fly,
Through a clear, blue sky
1965, the 8th of November.

Now he's fifty-eight
And his ponytail's grey
But the battle still plays in his head.
He limps when he walks,
But he's strong when he talks
About the shrapnel they left in his leg.

He puts on a grey suit
Over his Airborne tattoo
And He ties it on one time a year
And remembers the fallen,
As he orders a tall one
And swallows it down with his tears.

(Chorus)
On the 8th of November,
The angels were crying
As they carried his brothers away.
With the fire raining down
And the Hell all around
There were few men left standing that day.
Saw the eagle fly,
Through a clear, blue sky
1965, the 8th of November.

Saw the eagle fly,
Through a clear, blue sky
1965.

(Chorus)
On the 8th of November,
The angels were crying
As they carried his brothers away.
With the fire raining down
And the Hell all around
There were few men left standing that day.

(Chorus)
On the 8th of November,

41 thunderer

©2001 Dave Carter / Dave Carter Music (BMI)

in fair silver city on the blind side of fate
i grew up to manhood on the narrow and straight
but prideful i stumbeled, and foolish i fell
in the silken fine trammels of a cruel yankee belle

slender and wicked, flame in her eyes
pearl white and nickel 'round the curve of her thighs
smooth as dry whiskey, but cold to caress
she slid like a viper from her tooled leather dress

forty-one thunderer, colt repeater
she's a silver-tongued wonder and a mean mistreater
six-eyed delilah, brazen and bold
now it's stand and deliver, and fire in the hole
forty-one thunderer turn loose o' my soul

i feared not the lawman nor the thief in the night
nor angel nor devil when she went by my side
and her hunger burned blazes till it felt like my own
her wanderin' heart drove me wild and alone

forty-one thunderer...

we rode out from canaan in search of our fortune
or something' worth dyin' for, beauty or evermore
over the blackwater flats with her jackrabbits running
under a sky burnin' brimstone and reckoning
sweet for the hope of rain
and the sand in your teeth grindin' tiny white diamonds
to moments of loss that you cannot explain

so come demon lover when the long night is through
and sing me your lullaby, simple and true
for legends will tarnish and trigger will rust
and the road over glory come to ashes and dust

forty-one thunderer...

great thread!

Lotsa good choices here but for my money the winner is Warren Zevon with the likes of Roland ( the headless Thompson gunner) + Lawyers guns and money from the album "Hard luck streak in Dancing School" . Album cover features a pair of ballerina toe shoes and a pile of empty shell casings on a hardwood floor.

Powerderfinger
by Neil Young

Look out, Mama,
there's a white boat
comin' up the river
With a big red beacon,
and a flag,
and a man on the rail
I think you'd better call John,
'Cause it don't
look like they're here
to deliver the mail
And it's less than a mile away
I hope they didn't come to stay
It's got numbers on the side
and a gun
And it's makin' big waves.

Daddy's gone,
my brother's out hunting
in the mountains
Big John's been drinking
since the river took Emmy-Lou
So the powers that be
left me here
to do the thinkin'
And I just turned twenty-two
I was wonderin' what to do
And the closer they got,
The more those feelings grew.

Daddy's rifle in my hand
felt reassurin'
He told me,
Red means run, son,
numbers add up to nothin'
But when the first shot
hit the docks I saw it comin'
Raised my rifle to my eye
Never stopped to wonder why.
Then I saw black,
And my face splashed in the sky.

Shelter me from the powder
and the finger
Cover me with the thought
that pulled the trigger
Think of me
as one you'd never figured
Would fade away so young
With so much left undone
Remember me to my love,
I know I'll miss her.

"Stagger Lee" (various artists)

"...But Stagger Lee Shot Billy
He shot that poor boy so bad
That the bullet went through Billy
And broke the Bartenders glass..."

Modest Mouse's "Bury Me With It"

We were shooting at a mountain of dirt/
Well nothing was broken and nothing was hurt/
But I probably really should have been at work!

Firehouse - Reach for the sky

Ohh yeah
Well I'm an outlaw I make my living on the run
My life is lonely, but I was born to need no one
Always on my own ohh
My gun is loaded, I'm a six-shot heart attack
I pull the trigger, so you better watch your back

Looking out for #1 so you had better take this piece of advice
Make your move, stick 'em up or kiss your ass goodbye
Reach for the sky or I will shoot you down

In the blink of an eye -- reach for the sky
There's nowhere to run nowhere to hide
Reach for the sky
I got the drop on you so raise them high
Reach for the sky

Well it's a shot show down, this is what I do for fun
I got e reputation, yeah I'm the fastest gun
I'm living on the highway movin' on from town to town
You better do it my way or I will shoot you down

Looking out for #1 so you had better take this piece of advice
Make your move, stick 'em up or kiss your ass goodbye
Reach for the sky or I will shoot you down

In the blink of an eye -- reach for the sky
There's nowhere to run nowhere to hide
Reach for the sky

I got the drop on you so raise them high
Reach for the sky
Take your best shot
Oh go for your guns baby
Reach for the sky or I will shoot you down
In the blink of an eye -- reach for the sky

There's nowhere to run nowhere to hide
Reach for the sky
Reach for the sky or I will shoot you down
In the blink of an eye -- reach for the sky

There's nowhere to run nowhere to hide
Reach for the sky
I got the drop on you so raise them high
Reach for the sky
Ohh reach for the sky

Bon Jovi - Santa Fe

They say that no man is an island
And good things come to those who wait
But the things I hear are there just to remind me
Every dog will have his day

The spirits, they intoxicate me
I watched them infiltrate my soul
They try to say it's too late for me
Tell my guns I'm coming home

I swear I'm gonna live forever
Tell my maker he can wait
I'm riding somewhere south of heaven
Heading back to Santa Fe
It's judgment day in Santa Fe

Once I was promised absolution
There's only one solution for my sins
You gotta face your ghosts and know with no illusions
That only one of you is going home again

And I blame this world for making a good man evil
It's this world that can drive a good man mad
And it's this world that turns a killer into a hero
Well I blame this world for making a good man bad

Now I ain't getting into heaven if the devil has his way
I swear I'm gonna live forever
Heading back to Santa Fe
Got debts to pay in Santa Fe
It's judgment day in Santa Fe
Lord have mercy

[Guitar solo]

So I save a prayer when I need it most
To the Father, Son and the Holy Ghost
And sign it from a sinner with no name
When I meet my maker
Will he close the book on the hearts I broke and the lives I took ?
Will he walk away 'cause my soul's too late to save ?

Now I ain't getting into heaven
If the devil has his way
I swear I'm gonna live forever
Heading back to Santa Fe
Got debts to pay in Santa Fe
It's judgment day in Santa Fe

Did anyone mention Iron Maiden - The trooper?
Or Tailgunner?

This morning I shot six holes in my freezer,
I think I got cabin fever,
Somebody sound the alarm.

"Boat Drinks" -- Jimmy Buffett

Well, the High Sheriff, he shot Lazarus,
Well, he shot him with a great big number,
It was a .45, Lord, Lord, it was a .45.

"Po' Lazarus"
Soundtrack from 'O Brother Where Art Thou.'

Seven Spanish Angels:
She reached down and picked the gun up,
That lay smokin in his hand.
She said, "Father please forgive me,
I can't make it without my man."
And she knew the gun was empty,
And she knew she couldn't win.
Her final prayer was answered,
When the rifles fired again

Little Armalite:
And it's down in Kilwilkie that's were I long to be
Lying in the dark with the Provo company
A comrade on me left and another one on me right
And a clip of ammunition for me little Armalite!
Well when premier came to Belfast say's he the battles won
The generals they have told him we've got them on the run,
But corporals and privates while on patrol at night
"send home for re-enforcement's it's the bloody Armalite!"

If I had a Rock Launcher:
here comes the helicopter -- second time today
everybody scatters and hopes it goes away
how many kids they've murdered only god can say
if i had a rocket launcher...
Some Son of a Bitch would Die.

Highwayman;
I was a highwayman. Along the coach roads I did ride
With sword and pistol by my side
Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade
Many a soldier shed his lifeblood on my blade
The bastards hung me in the spring of twenty-five
But I am still alive.

The SAM Song:
Well I have been a Provo now for fifteen years or more
Of ArmaLites and mortar bombs I thought I knew the score
Now we have a weapon that we've never used before
The Brits are looking worried and they're going to worry more
Tiocfaidh ár lá, sing up the 'RA
SAM missiles in the sky
I started out with petrol bombs and throwing bricks and stones
There were a hundred more lads like me I never was alone
Soon I learned that bricks and stones won't drive the brits away
It wasn't very long before I joined the IRA

Ballad of the Green Baret:
Back at home a young wife waits
Her Green Beret has met his fate
He has died for those oppressed
Leaving her his last request
"Put silver wings on my son's chest
Make him one of America's best
He'll be a man they'll test one day
Have him win the Green Beret

The Foggy Dew:
Right proudly high over Dublin town
They hung out a flag of war.
'Twas better to die 'neath an Irish sky
Than at Suvla or Sud el Bar.
And from the plains of Royal Meath
Strong men came hurrying through;
While Brittania's huns with their great big guns
Sailed in through the foggy dew

Bad Company;
Company, always on the run
Destiny is a rising sun
I was born six gun in my hand
Behind the gun I make my final stand
That's why they call me
Bad company,

How about Charlie Daniel's "Simple Man"
Now I'm the kinda man that'd not harm a mouse
But if I catch somebody breakin in my house
I've got twelve guage shotgun waiting on the other side

Or Hank Jr.'s "Country Boy can survive"
The preacher man says it's the end of time
And the Mississippi River she's a goin'dry

The interest is up and the stock market's down
And you only get mugged if you go down town

I live back in the woods you see
My woman and the kids and the dogs and me

I've got a shotgun a rifle and a four wheel drive
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

I can plow a field all day long
I can catch catfish from dusk til dawn, yeah

We make our own whiskey and our own smoke too
Ain't too many things these ole boys can't do

We grow good ole tomatoes and homemade wine
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

Because you can't starve us out and you can't make us run
Cause we'se them ole boys raised on shotguns
We say grace and we say ma'am
If you ain't into that we don't give a damn

We come from West Virginia coal mines
And the Rocky Mountains and the western skies

And we can skin a buck, we can run a trout line
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

I had a good friend in New York City
He never called me by my name, just hillbilly

My Grandpa taught me how to live off the land
And his taught him to be a business man

He used to send me pictures of the broadway nights
And I'd send him some homemade wine

But he was killed by a man with a switchblade knife
For forty three dollars, my friend lost his life

I'd love to spit some beechnut in that dude's eyes
And shoot him with my ole 45
Cause a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

Cause you can't starve us out and you can't make us run
Cause we'se them ole boys raised on shotguns
We say grace and we say ma'am
If you ain't into that, we don't give a damn

We're from North California and South Alabam
And little towns all around this land

And we can skin a buck and run a trout line
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive
Country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

The Lights Of LA County

She left Dallas for California
With an old friend by her side
Well he did not say much
But one year later
He'd ask her to be his wife

Well one year later I left Houston
With an old friend by my side
Well it did not say much
But it was a beauty
Of a coal black .45

And the lights of L.A. County
Look like diamonds in the sky
When you're driving through the hours
With an old friend at your side

So I drove on all the day long
And I drove on through the night
And I thought of her a'waiting
For to be his blushing bride

And the lights of L.A. County
They looked like diamonds in the sky
As I drove into the valley
With my old friend at my side

And as she stood there at the altar
All dressed in her gown of white
Her face was bright as stars a'shining
Like I'd dreamed of all my life

And they kissed each other
And they turned around
And they saw me standing in the aisle
Well I did not say much
I just stood there watching
As that .45 told them goodbye

And the lights of L.A. County
Look like diamonds in the sky
When you're kneeling at the altar
With an old friend at your side

I Didn't Know The Gun Was Loaded
Hank Fort & Herb Leighton 1949

Oh Miss Effie was her name

Through the west she won her fame

Being handy with the gun

But she drove the men insane

Cause she'd whip out her pistol

And shoot most any guy

And sing out this alibi

I didn't know the gun was loaded

And I'm so sorry my friend

I didn't know the gun was loaded

And I'll never, never do it again

But one night she made a slip

Shot the sheriff in the hip

So the law it took a hand

And made Effie take the stand

And she pled, 'oh your honor

I'll know you turn me loose

When you hear my one excuse'

I didn't know the gun was loaded

And I'm so sorry my friend

I didn't know the gun was loaded

And I'll never, never do it again

I didn't know the gun was loaded

But regarding the gun that I toted

All I did was hold it high and go ...

BANG, PING, HUHH, ZSSS

I'll never, never do it again

INSTRUMENTAL

Yes the jury all agreed

That Miss Effie should be freed

But the sheriff's jealous wife

Was indignant (yes, indeed)

So she borrowed a pistol

And shot this village belle

And sang as Miss Effie fell

I didn't know the gun was loaded

And I'm so sorry my friend

I didn't know the gun was loaded

And I'll never, never do it again

I didn't know the gun was loaded

But regarding the gun that I toted

All I did was hold it high and go ...

BANG, PING, HUHH, ZSSS

I'll never, never do it again
