Ca and serial #s on bullets.....

Where is the bullet etched? If it's along the side, then the etching will be erased when the bullet strikes the barrel. If it's along the back, will it be able to survive the extremely hot gasses that propel the bullet in the first place?

Is it done in terms of lots, or is each bullet etched individually? Lots would make much more sense, given the sheer number of bullets fired.

What makes the politicians think criminals won't purchase bullets out of state? What about Internet retailers? Are they screwed as well?

I see nothing good coming out of this idea.

I usually loathe this kind of solution, but the best way to end the nonsense coming out of places like California and New Jersey is to have the US Congress pass a law or resolution.

Said law would say that through legislative findings of the founding of the Consumer Products Safety Commission, the attendant exemption of firearms and tobacco from regulation by the CPSC, and through various legislative efforts such as outlawing the production and sale of "cop-killer" bullets, and "undetectable plastic firearms," the AWB, and other laws such as importation bans, that Congress has established the intent of federal pre-emption of state authority in regulating the field of firearms manufacture and the production of ammunition that travels in the stream of interstate commerce.

Overnight California and New Jersey's forays into gun design are totally invalidated and their efforts to extend their authority to the production or sale of ammunition is ended.

Write your Senator or House Rep today. If you live in an anti state or district, write Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho.

In further news today, CA has halted the legislative backing of requiring serial numbers on match heads in order to expedite the prosecution of Arsonists.

Seems the test lab kept catching on fire - that last fire was a doozy.

What is that show they do crime stuff...CSI - yeah - just let Callie look at the bullets - she can tell you who, what, when - even the color of shorts a fella had that fired it...

Has anyone given any thought to the part the manufacturer may have played in all of this? The way I read the article, only one ammunition maker has the setup to do this, at a cost of $350,000 to $500,000 per machine. Perhaps they think they can get a return on the investment by making sure only they can sell in that market. If so, watch out- they'll try to expand it nationwide ASAP. Just a thought.

interesting take on it- and yes, sounds about right, if they make it happen here , it will most likely be able to spread.

y'all need to move the heck over here already and help stop this before its too late.
oh well. Hitler wouldnt go past Czechoslovakia right?

Wait a second.

Isn't US Congress the one who's supposed to regulate interstate commerce?

I understand that wet/damp/dry states are specifically governed by a amendment of the Constitution (can't remember which one right now, sorry), but isn't this a unConstitutional law? For that matter, isn't CA's ban on "hi-caps" and their importation into the state also unconstitutional?

Well, the "market" in CA may still be lucrative for ammo manufacturers, but if any of them did what Barrett did, I'd stop using any other companies products. I would support that company with every ammo dollar I spent. The same holds true of rifles, shotguns and pistols. Were I in the market for a high end AR, there is no doubt that Barrett would get my business over the others.

Ya know this stupid bill hasn't passed the full Assembly or the Senate and
who's to say Conan would sign it. Now that the Drats have brought more gun
banishment bills up front, we who survive here in Kal will have to man the
phones and mail to get our point across. We may not win, but if we don't try
we might as turn in our weapons now and let the criminals and gangs do
what they will. Not to say they don't now, but we for the present, still have
a fighting chance.

Dems are no friends of the gun front. Bottom line.

Question...

Where does it need to go further to become law? I am not sure on Cali legislative process law. Does the Governer need to sign it? The point being is can he dodge this or will he have to face it (which I know he would dread).

Ravensforge has a web page - they make "skateboard solutions" - they are "the pioneer in eliminating damage caused by skateboards". Nothing at all about bullet etching.

So...I went to the Patent Office. The only patent I could find issued to this company is this one. It's for "A protection device is for restricting an object from sliding along an edge formed by a pair of surfaces of a structure." There's more in the abstract, but it has nothing to do with bullet etching. The two fellows who came up with this idea are Ford; Russell H. (Seattle, WA); Knickerbocker; John H. (Seattle, WA), and the only thing that I can find that maps into the posted article is they and the company named Ravensforge are located in Seattle.

just think of the mountains and mountains of paperwork to keep up with it. didnt someone try a similiar experiment that said every time you buy 22 long rifle ammo, you had to sign your name in a book? I remember doing that years ago then the folks got tired of all that paperwork so it stopped. etching a bullet is ridiculous...its not going to fight crime but I guarantee it will force ammo manufactureers to raise the cost of ammo because they are going to have to spend more money to make it...and this will stop drive by shootings?

..someone please explain how making ammo very expensive is going to deter crime? actually, it could create a black market like tobacco has done, some things never change.

gm:

The purpose of this legislation is not to reduce or deter crime, but simply to raise the cost of owning and shooting guns in CA to prohibitively high levels, thus effectively banning handguns in CA.

They can only pass so much gun control, and now they are going after the ammunition.

Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying to your face.

The TEXT of the bill.

High points:

1. Ammo to be marked in lots of no more than 50. Every fifty found unmarked is a new offense; A brick of .22 could put you in prison for life.

2. Handloading will be illegal except with bullets bought already marked, and the handloads have to remain in your possession.

3. No importing ammo from other states.

4. No private exchanges of ammo.

5. Doesn't apply to shotguns or rifles, just to "pistol ammo". As I read it, frangible ammo WILL be illegal.

6. Government employees are exempt, of course.

Almost missed this one:

7. Local governments are specifically invited to add their own requirements.

They should just set it up so the retailers have a machine that laser imprints your name on them at the time of purchase : "This bullet belongs to Billy."

And to think I moved out of California. What was I thinking?

I hope they track how much ammo I have bought so that I can be forewarned if my supply is approaching an 'arsenal'. I want to make sure I am still one box short of having an 'arsenal' just to be safe. [/]

I can't believe the govt is spending my tax dollars on this asinine BS. I am paying the govt to strip my freedoms, what joy.

Ravensforge, a Seattle company which has developed a bullet coding system
Time to do a THR group buy on their stock and dump their board of directors. THAT is the modern Boston Tea Party.

I'll do a little research and get back to ya on this...

Here is a little article on the subject.

The company states that they can recover serial numbers on as little as 20% of the bullet and that they can uniquely identify up to 637 trillion bullets and up to 744 trillion expanding the number of identifiers.

Brilliant-sick but brilliant...stock takeover...

I'm going to have to add to my nightly prayers and to grace at meals:"Thank you, God, that I don't live in California."

You have my sympathy, Californians, you're living in an asylum that the inmates manage.

Is the AG elected? Y'all need to move heaven and earth to get rid of this idiot.
