Can a pistol Under $600 be worth trusting your life on?

There are plenty of good reasons to stay away from used weapons in general. Ever been to a range? Take a look at the way some people treat their firearms.

You never buy used cars or appliances, either? Because there's a lot more that can go wrong with them, and they are often things you can't detect, even with a thorough inspection. Guns, OTOH, are pretty simple, and potential problems usually very easy to see just by working the action and field stripping them.

Besides, most used guns are fairly lightly used. I've bought so many that may as well have been new I can't even count them anymore. I just know I let the first buyer take the hit on depreciation and ended up with a nice gun for less money.

The majority of the Glock line is slightly over $400 LE pricing. As a majority of the agencies today use that handgun, I guess the question lacks some validity.

there is no pistol that cost under $600 that you can trust your life with
Sounds like a very ignorant comment.
There are TONS of quality handguns out there for less than $600.
Mine cost $120.
Too me it's a factor of whether or not the gun works and whether or not I am trained with it.
I've outshot those newfangled self loading shotguns on the skeet range with my old single break action.
Compensating lack of skill with better equipment just makes you look foolish, unless you practice practice practice and actually perform well with it.

My brand new KT pf-9 was 240 dollars , May brand new cm9 kahr was 409. charter UL was 325 and sigma 269 glock 17 505 new. Heck I don't even own a retail price handgun that would cost over 600 dollars new. Those office buddies are someone to avoid at all cost unless you going to out shoot then with a cheap trouble free handgun.

I carry a $500 .40 M&P that functions flawlessly.

My wife's is a $300 Sigma 9mm, much maligned, horrible trigger, but it's been running without a hiccup since the wife stopped limp wristing.

CZ 82, Model 10 revolver... all 180-250 or more, great used police guns.

Your friends might not be insane, just lacking exposure to the real world.

Taurus are hit and miss, Your luck may vary, and others here have had stellar experiences with them. I have not.

If your range is $600 or less, you have a huge world of grips to grope... find the one that feels natural in your hand.

Aside from HK, some 1911s and a few Sigs there aren't many auto loaders that can't be had new for under $600. And some for well under that price.

I have a Ruger P95 that has NEVER failed. It sits in my nightstand w/TLR-1 light and Hornady TAP ammo. Gun-$350 Light-$100 ammo-$25 the whole setup is $475 and I trust it with my family's life! Nuf said.

Used appliances? No. Never even considered doing that...

Used car? I did as a teenager. Never bought a used car since... I learned my lesson that time :)

Hell, I've had some nightmares with new cars, but at least they got fixed under warranty

heck no.

i am soon to buy the ruger lcp. for $300 new. i am doing a lot of research, even joined a forum based just for the lc? series rugers, focusing more on the lcp. from this site, that site, and a few other sites. as well as talking to a couple people in a few gun stores. the lcp, lc9, and lcr are all great guns.

infact, it seems most people buy these guns just for consealed. some as a primary, some as a secondary. i have yet to find someone that didnt trust these guns (that owned it).

the same goes for the kel-tec p3at. i have yet to find someone that said "yea, i had one, but i didnt feel i could trust it will my life if a SD came about, so i sold it/stop carrying it.

i posted a thread here about the S&W model 10's that j&g sales has. there police issued, used, but there $225. i have decided i wanted something smaller to carry, but i dont believe one person in that thread mentioned it to be a bad gun. a lot even said it they could, would, or do carry it.

these are just afew examples. honestly, if you have a local range that lets you rent guns, go rent a few and shoot them, see what has the size, comfort, feel, reliability you want.

i know around were i am at, we have shoot straight, that you have to be a member to rent guns from (however, you can do $35 for a one month membership) and rent any gun for $10 (an hour i think)

When I couldn't afford a new car, sure, I bought used cars in the past. I also haven't bought a used car that I didn't know the original owner personally. My last "used" car was a 2003 that I bought from my brother in 2004. Oh and on a new vehicle, depreciation means little when you shop around and wait for the right time to buy.

Appliances? Definitely not. Most people don't maintain their appliances/electronics at all, let alone the minimum. I rarely buy anything used honestly. You just never know what people are hiding. I've bought 2 houses in my life, one "used" and the other never lived in. Guess which one gave me issues? The one where they decided they didn't need a permit to build an enclosed porch on the back of the house. My wife and I were young and eager to own a home, and it was a valuable lesson that I learned from.

Now for guns, I don't have a problem shopping around and waiting for a good deal on new, and paying a few extra bucks for peace of mind. A firearm is something I'll likely keep for the rest of my life, so I'll pay the extra to know exactly what it's been through. I do own used guns, but they were all passed down to me and cost me nothing. They were also all bought new by members of my family.

Moral of the story? Buy used all you like, but don't act like I'm crazy or ignorant because I choose not to. :p

I agree. Often times, used items are nothing more than you doing someone the favor of relieving them of their headache.

haha that is funny and ignorant. i got a new Gen3 Glock 19 a month ago for $450 after my LEO/MIL discount. Even without that, you'd be looking at right around $600 OTD for a very popular pistol

I would probably go ahead and stop having any conversations with somebody who would make such a comment...after I was done laughing at them

I don't own a single handgun OVER $600...... I also used to carry a Glock 19 as my side arm at work, trusted my life with it everyday.

When I'm out with my family around town or even camping I have a Glock 22 with me.
It goes everywhere with me.
Cost me $540 of my hard earned money.
And I don't trust just my life with it, I trust my family's life with it.
My wife carries her GP-100 out in the woods with her when she's hunting.
Cost me $520 of the same hard earned money.
And she trusts her life to it.

yes...

my Beretta 92FS Inox cost @ $550...flawless for over 1,000 rounds

my Ruger P345 cost @ $475...nearly flawless for over 750 rounds

both ger rotated in-and-out of rotation for HD, camp 'chore' work, and vehicle gun
