So I've got a little story to share this morning that I hope will be of some benefit to all of us that accept the responsibility to legally carry a firearm.

Recently, for some reason, my jeans have begun to shrink to the point where they are starting to get uncomfortable. When I IWB carry, my perfered method, they get really uncomfortable. Rather than give in to "the next size up" I've decided to pocket carry until the shrinking jeans thing gets "worked out" (pun sort of intended). For years, I've carried my wallet in my right front pocket. Since I'm right handed, I'm carrying a Taurus TCP in the right front pocket now (wallet in the left). The pocket holster I use is about the same size as my wallet. I've been doing this for a few days now.

So yesterday morning I go into the gas station to buy some bottled water and fruit (instead of a 44oz big gulp and donut) and as I'm pulling out my wallet (from its traditional spot in my right front pocket) I have an "Oh S&*!" moment when I realize that its not my wallet but the grip of my pistol thats just starting to clear the top of my pocket. Immediatly I shoved it back into the hoster and the clerk was none the wiser. My heart was racing as I realized that I almost accidently robbed the Quik E Mart!

I guess the moral of my story is this: If you're going to change your method of carry or switch firearms, be sure you train yourself thoroughly for your new carry condition. Those of us who accept the responsibility to legally carry firearms have a duty to ourselves and those around us to do so as safely and competently as possible. I can chuckle at my little story now but it could have ended up a lot worse (and I'd be sending this from a little 5 X 8 private room).

Good point.

As a suggestion, it's not necessary to change your carry location when IWB becomes uncomfortable due to, uh, shrinking pants. Simply wear your IWB holster between your belt and pants; this is known as "inside-the-belt" (ITB) carry. It does require, however, as long a concealing top-garment (shirt or jacket) as traditional OWB-carry does.

I was never comfortable carrying IWB, and carried ITB for years before switching primarily to OWB-carry.

I am right handed so I have always arraigned my pockets so, other than my firearm, nothing heavy is on the right side of my body. Wallet is in my back right pocket, pocket knife clipped in front pocket, gum and a small multi tool. When I do pocket carry, which is rare, it feels much heavier so I definitely know there is a firearm there. Because its different than normal.

I have been contemplating changing the layout of my pockets to accommodate a magazine carrier. Takes a bit of thought considering Ive had the same pocket layout since about 5.

My eyes widened as I read the OP

An oh shhh moment indeed.

They say some holsters are so comfortable you forget the gun is there. Well, as carriers, we should all be mindful of where our buddy is at all times. It's only fair to be as tactical as...Well...At least knowing where our gun is.
