Between black coffee, and shiftn' gears
White Female, Early 60's, born without a lower weak side arm.
Lives alone in a semi rural setting.
Prosthesis is off, and stretched out on the sofa reading and drifted off asleep.
Faithful dawg on the floor next to the sofa and between coffee table.

Lights flickered...

There was a repeated banging at the back kitchen door and the crash of glass breaking.
The dawg barked the first bark at the first banging and went into full protection mode.
Lady rolled off couch and onto floor, onto knees, and eased back to the hallway.
Dawg stayed between kitchen and her, and with whispers, the dawg retreated back down the hallway as well.

Once in the Master Bedroom, all metal door locked, both bedroom lock and deadbolt.
Further retreat into what some call "Texas Style" meaning the Master Bath, then two huge walk-in closets off to the side of fiberglass shower/tub.

Both of these closets have all metal doors and deadbolts as well.
Both locked, she and dawg inside one.

Inside both are land-line telephones, and inexpensive cell phones.
In addition to other items.
She flipped a light switch, which turns on a light/lights situated on roof, as she called direct the LE of her area, and then called a neighbor.

Passwords and code words, and neighbor arrived to meet LE.
LE officers eased on up, not seeing any vehicles, approached with caution and proceeded onto property.

"Clear" was given via phone call to the lady, and she met them at the back kitchen door which she unlocked the dead bolt with key.

Hi-winds had come through, and tree limbs, and other debris, had hit that back door, and busted glass.

Statues says she does not have to retreat, she chose to, and this is one of her practiced plans of what to do if something comes up at her home.

She has battery lighting, including that light on the roof, again a practiced plan, she and trusted neighbors use to communicate, and these can be accessed in various areas of the house.

Some will ask about guns.
Yes, she CCWs, she can shoot very well, both handgun and long guns.

She chose to use some different tools in the toolbox, for this situation.

After doing all the right things,if she had to shoot, she would likely be far more able to deal with the aftereffects.

A woman after my own heart. Why should I go when others get paid (by me) to go for me? Of course a real person can't really rely on such things so you always have to be ready to go yourself....

The worst that could happen when done right is they can soften things up for you.

Good plan. Just because you don't have to retreat doesn't make it a bad tactic. The lady retreated to a more secure area. The bedroom is a place I'd retreat to too, because in my case it is where my guns are. And it's a lot easier to defend a room with only two points of entry than worry about the whole house...

sm,

I really appreciate the moral of your story. I have always taught CCW people that their moral obligation is to avoid an armed encounter if at all possible as long as they do not compromise the safety of others in so doing. This lady sounds like my kind of person.

Gramps.
