Cop to you..."drop your weapon"...how to drop?

Aikido works great for what it's intended for, but a sudden move of any kind when a scared cop has you covered is likely to result in your death as a result of 'Gun-Fu' as employed by the cop.
Biker:neener:

Sir, I'm pointing it at the robber, and the safety is off. I'm now going to put the safety on (click), place it on the floor (gently), and back away. What would you like me to do now?

I suspect the next thing you will hear (if not the boom of his service weapon) is: NO! DROP THE GUN! NOW! before you ever complete your conversation.

As long as the gun is in your hand and being manipulated, you are a threat. Personally, I don't want to be seen as that and I'm dropping it down immediately and my hands go up.

Simply drop it.

Sitting here typing my thoughts are that I wouldn't want to drop and damage one of my guns, much like I wouldn't want to drop a baby. But I suspect if a cop was hollering "DROP YOUR GUN!" at me I would be complying instantly.

Too much T.V.?

Are that many of you under the impression that police officers are that eager to shoot somebody? They deal with these types of situations on a frequent basis, and if anything err on the side of caution. Most officers would only return fire unless the situation called for disabling a suspect (that usually means the suspect is already identified as a violent felon and is fleeing or indangering others). For a group of gun bearing rights people, alot of people on here sure believe the liberal media and all their hype.

I wouldn't care to try out your theory there. "Err on the side of caution"? Their goal at the start of the day is to go home alive. Allowing bad guys (or suspected bad guys) to have the first shot is not the way to accomplish that.

As to "simply drop it", my primary worry isn't the damage to the gun...I could care less. It's that if it's cocked and chambered, that dropping it could result in a BANG that would either hit me or a bystander, or that the sound of the shot would make the cop open fire.

Just an observation...
I think I'd rather 'place' the gun gently on the ground. I don't care about scratches or damage; but on the off chance that 'dropping' the gun caused an inadvertent discharge, you would likely be on the receiving side of a Gold Dot shower, courtesy of a startled LEO.

Just remember that while you are holding the gun, you are a threat. Slowly putting it down gives you lots of time to shoot the officer.

Your call, I'm dropping it as my guns are supposedly safe during a drop. It's scary to drop a gun. I once dropped on at the top of the stairs and it did a perfect pinwheel down the stairs, bouncing on each. I thought I would have a heart attack as I watched it. Should have moved but I was stunned.

No bang.

Thus, I drop my gun.

The scariest drop I ever had was a 1911 that landed on the backstrap with the 10 mile wide barrel pointed straight at me. I'm shocked that I didn't go to "Code Brown".

Response from my Det. Sgt. Friend on the subject:

Re: What's your take on this q:

Plain and simple, drop it as fast as you can and raise your hands high in the air where they can be seen. If it is at all possible to decock, then of course you should. Most other weapons have multiple drop safeties anyway. If it's an old gun, THEN WHAT THE <edit> ARE YOU USING IT FOR SELF DEFENSE ANYWAY???
I train my officers about reaction time and the fact that even after being hit, an assailent can still fire at you. FBI specialist will come to court for departments, when asked, to testify that if the subject didn't instantly drop his wepaon when told to do so by police, then the police have every justification to fire on an armed subject whom they beleive to be a threat. Yes you take the chance of being hit by your own round if the dropped weapon goes off, but most cops will know you have dropped it and that is why. There's no easy answers, you just have to weigh the odds.

AND CARRY GOOD WEAPONS IN PREPARATION.

I would say that if the cop was in the wrong in telling you to drop the weapon that you drop it so the barrel is allways pointed at the cop. We have a lot of bad cops in this country as they have to have degrees to become one now and common sense is not a issue anymore. I get a kick out of people on line that try and tell us they are cops in real life. Anybody could say that and how are we to know if they are or not.
I never believe anything on line anymore.

You know, I don't remember hearing Ayoob ever say anything about cops being any different from regular people.

But I do remember that in LFI-1, he teaches people exactly how to drop a weapon if it needs to be done. And he spends a lot of time explaining how to work the circumstances to avoid having the cops come up on you while you've got the gun out.

Since this thread has come back up, it is worth bringing back this response/quote as well; LFI-1 will indeed teach you the best ways (and equipment) to deal with this.

Hint: it typically does not involve "telling the cop what you're going to do"...
