MIAMI

The crew of a luxury cruise ship used a sonic weapon that blasts earsplitting noise in a directed beam while being attacked by a gang of pirates off Africa this weekend, the cruise line said Monday.

The Seabourn Spirit had a Long Range Acoustic Device, or LRAD, installed as a part of its defense systems, said Bruce Good, a spokesman for Miami-based Seabourn Cruise Line. The Spirit was about 100 miles off Somalia when pirates fired rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns as they tried to get onboard.

The subsidiary of Carnival Corp. was investigating whether the weapon was successful in warding off the pirates, he said. The ship's captain also changed its course, shifted into high speed and headed out into the open sea to elude the pirates, who were in two small boats, he said. He had no further details.

Device maker American Technology Corp. said earsplitting "bangs" were directed by trained security personnel toward the pirates. That, combined with ship maneuvers, caused the attackers to leave the area, the company said.

The LRAD is a so-called "non-lethal weapon" developed for the U.S. military after the 2000 attack on the USS Cole off Yemen as a way to keep operators of small boats from approaching U.S. warships.

The military version is a 45-pound, dish-shaped device that can direct a high-pitched, piercing tone with a tight beam. Neither the LRAD's operators or others in the immediate area are affected.

American Technology, based in San Diego, compares its shrill tone to that of smoke detectors, only much louder. It can be as loud as about 150 decibels, while smoke alarms are about 80 to 90 decibels.

The devices have been deployed on commercial and naval vessels worldwide since summer 2003, the company said.

Wasn't there an episode of The X-files where a device that produced ultra low frequency sounds were making people's heads explode?

PULL!!

Humm how do score a pirate? What about doubles?

First Pirate lost, second Pirate dead - Please repeat the Doubles.
Shooter Ready...?

I guess Crazy Pirate is like Crazy Quail. I suppose Flurries is the same...

I ain't ever shot a Target Shotgun off a really really big boat. I guess it is akin to Field Shotguns from a Johnboat tho'.

I bet I could figure this out right quick.
;)

Decibels are fun stuff - logarithmic, IIRC - such that 95 is double 90, 100 double 95 etc.

Rifle shot at 1 meter = roughly 130db (wikipedia)
Double that, then double again...

Major ouchie.

I think there is a good business idea here. Booking cruises to pirate areas. A large cruise ship with very well armed passengers. I'd pay a couple grand for a one week target shooting cruise.:D

Don't those ships usually have trap shooting onboard?Couple shots over the side into the inflatables.Throw out one rope and watch the "pirates" fight over it.

I AGREE... Then when they have all grabed ahold throw the other end over with the anchor attached.

Sounds like a heck of a deal to me! Where do I sign up for that one. As long as there is a casino, I won't have to even look for the wife;)

It's 2x the wattage for a +3db increase in sound.

Plus there's an addition if you've got multiple drivers...

Say, for instance, you had two 15" subwoofers under your 92" projection screen. Each of 'em by themselves is 91db efficient, but with two, you're up to 94db...

So, let's do some figuring...

94 1 watt
97 2
100 4
103 8
106 16
109 32
112 64
115 128
118 256
121 512 watts

Of course mine start to bottom out at about 119db... But I don't throw that much power at 'em.

Still, you're looking at a LOT of energy to produce that much sound. I'm guessing that they may have used a very special energy. Something that they don't want to let their possibly hopolophobic customer base know about.

The story I got off the radio today had the captain speeding up and swamping one of the two 20' fiberglass boats (size rules at sea). The crew wondered how such a small boat could get so far out with one load of fuel? Then the liner received a "distress signal" which turned out to be a trap, from a "ghost ship" about 18 miles from them (in the direction one of the small boats had headed). Neat stuff, huh? The liner headed to the Seychelles and a USN base for the expert removal of an unexploded grenade (RPG) from an interior wall. The other had hit the stern with no effect. Sort of like a pea-shooter on an elephant's butt I would think. One crew member was injured by shrapnel on the bridge where the pirates were directing their AK fire. No passengers were injured. Some passengers took pix until directed to the ship's lounge once the RPG's, etc. started getting fired. There was no mention of any "sonic weapon". I sure would like to take a "hunting trip" on a cruise liner. A little "cleanup on shipping lane 3!" I guess a big fear right now has pirates firing on and damaging a tanker at sea. I bet you start seeing (or hearing about) the "merchant mercenary" taking shape (not just a job, an adventure:D ). I wonder how many guys it would take to defend a tanker from this type of attack?

Okay. I'll be a little less obtuse.

I'll bet that the ship had a surprise or two, in a major caliber, and is using the "er... it was a sonic weapon" excuse to explain why there's such loud boom-boom going on so close to the passengers' tender ears...

OK, call me a crazy gun nut, really, I am a crazy gun nut, but shouldn't a cruise ship have a readily accessibly gun locker? In the age of terrorism, I think that it is an abrogation of the cruise lines responsibility not to outfit the crew with proper defensive gear and training.

If these pirates had ten cent ear plugs and a real sense of seamanship, they would have boarded the ship, and it would have gotten ugly. Passenger safety is just too important to trust to noise toys.

I think that was a bit of a surprise. Somali bandits are a known commodity in East Africa but now they're taking to the seas, which is something new for them. They must be getting more desperate. This effort was unsuccessful, so it shows they don't have skills yet.

There's a lot of pirating going on regularly in the South China Sea. Has been going on for decades and there are a lot of successes by pirates over there.

Err, the entire area around Indonesia is so infested with pirates that many slow ships expect to be stopped. It's even speculated that the pirates operate so profusely that they may be involved with the official militaries, something akin to a protection racket.

I don't know why, but my BS meter also pegs w-a-a-a-y off the scale with this one.

As for shotguns, none of the cruises I've been on had clay shooting any more, after some passengers complained about it being "inappropriate". :cuss:

The last ship we cruised on (one of the Holland America Line ships), the "Security Officer" was one very tough looking gentleman whose CV included many years as an officer in the Royal Marines. I simply cannot believe that there is not some sort of armoury on board cruise ships—if the crew could not offer even token armed resistance to a life-threatening situation, by the end of the following day the lawyers would be all over them like a seagull over a hot chip (French fry). :D

Strange, ALL of the ones I've been on have had it. My next booked cruise boasts an all-American crew. They'll probably all be packing.

On the dB side, I had a toy that could blast up to 140 or so dB.

Hi All-

We've been using old Slim Whitman recordings to defend against Martian attacks for years, so why not humans?

Ever hear of the Achille Lauro?

20 years ago that happened and still cruise ships sail unprotected.

At least here the Captain was able to outsail the little idiots.

Yes, certainly I've heard of the Achille Lauro. You obviously have some background here that we don't as regards ships still sailing unprotected. Would you care to share it?

Well, it's been the biggest disappointment of my cruises, but I'm glad it's not endemic. Mind me asking which lines you sail with? (I might need to try another cruise company :D )
