I have a '94 Chevy 4x4 stepside that I bought new. It has a 4" suspension lift and 33" tires, so that has to count towards the sterotype  It has 148,000 on the clock, but was retired as a daily driver in 2001 when I bought a used '95 Civic to get to work and back. Current DD is an '05 Civic that is getting 36+ MPG (or about 3 times better than the truck)

I'd love to get a new truck, but since I only use it to haul the camper in summer and get me around in the snow (less than 5,000 miles a year), I cannot justify the cost. $35,000 will buy lots of parts for a nearly 13 year old truck. Maybe I should put the money I would have spent on a truck payment towards more guns and ammo :D

Yeah, unfortunately, stereotype fits. I do own one ('82 F-150), but haven't driven it in about two years. It's just sitting out beside the garage, and rusting quietly to pieces. I drive an '01 Crown Vic, and also own an '82 Olds Cutlass w/ 403 and T-tops, for a summer toy.

Try a 76 Ford F-250 , thats pretty dented up with a 6 in well casing for a bumper . I used to love driving through Seattle with my AR-15 in the rack .. Talk about people making way for you ....;)

GOT TRUCK !!!!! and a firearm.
I thought everyone had a shotgun , rifle and a four wheel drive !!!! :D

but of course!

previously owned:

'91 Chevy S10, 2wd regular cab shortbed, 4.3 V6
'90 Chevy 454SS, no elaboration needed

currently own:

'92 Chevy Cheyenne, 2wd regular cab longbed, 4.3 V6
'05 Chevy Silverado, 2wd regular cab shortbed, 5.3 V8

love my chevy trucks, but I were to buy a 4wd, it would probably be a WRX STI

I don't think the pickup truck/gun stereotype in and of itself is something to get riled up about. What offends me is the stereotype some seem to have about those of us who do own pickups and/or guns; that is, that we're all a bunch of knuckle-dragging mouth-breathers who will shoot someone at the slightest provocation. And I think the people who would say something like that, or cast that stereotype...that testifies more to their own bigotry and insecurity than anything else.

I know what you mean. I was walking out of our lab one day with a coworker that knows me pretty well. When I started getting into my big [country bumpkin voice] ef-tiu-fity [/country bumpkin voice] ah em, I mean F-250 he said

"Man, that's your truck? :what: I thought that truck had to belonged to one of these rednecks around here."

:banghead: He even commented on it the next day. Oh well, guess people need to slam others into pre conceived molds whether they fit or not.

(On a side note, I am a true blooded Arkansan, so maybe there is something there.)

1984 Pontiac Fiero. Near impossible to carry more than one gun in legally. I suppose I could take the extra engine worth of spare parts from the trunk to make more space, but I might need that part or five.

I own a real pickup truck - 1972 Dodge 3\4 ton 400 V8. Has enough power to blast riceburners off the road. Of course then I drive a real car too - 1970 Plymouth Sport Fury. Never did like any of the newfangled crap they call cars. The cars of 60's & 70"s were built to last and I have living proof. I also am partial to cars from the 50"s too but maybe that is because I am a 1951 model myself. Happy Trails| :)

I drive a pickup. I've driven pickups for the last 22 years, but this will be the last one. My situation has changed and I no longer need a truck. Once my truck is worn out, I will replace it with a compact car.

I've had two Toyota trucks...the last one was a Toyota Tundra. Sold it to pay off bills. I drive a Toyota Camry now. I miss my truck especially since I live in the woods. I'm saving up to buy a used truck...I'm thinking of an diesel International...it will have enough power to pull the beasts. Friends of mine say the Tundra is kind of weak for pulling a horse. I really do like Toyotas though.

Pickup trucks and guns could both be considered utilitarian tools so I can see them going hand in hand, particularly in rural areas.

I drive an SUV myself so I voted no.

I'm not about to read through five pages of responses, so forgive me if someone already made these points.

Gun owners, atleast the ones I know, tend to be handy people. They have lots of tools on hand, including the best tool a man can own- a full size pickup truck.

I have one, too. A big '05 Silverado 2500HD, ext cab, 8 foot bed, 4X4. I need it for my livelihood, but I'd still have one if I didn't. Its power and versatility allow me to be less dependent on others, which is something that most gun-owner types value highly.

I have 3 pick-up's: A 1980 Power Wagon 4x4 with a 440/4 speed, a 1977 Power Wagon 4x4 with a wicked small block/4 speed and a 1951 Dodge 2wd 1/2 Ton with a 318/904.

My daily driver is a '99 Intrepid ES. Much better fuel economy and comfort The Power Wagons ride like bricks and get 5.5 and 7 MPG around town, respectively. The '51 is fun, but is no good in the snow and not much fun at highway speeds (75+).

Would love to have a new 1 ton 4x4 w/Cummins, but that's $40k I could spend on guns!

Mostly I tend towards more fuel efficient

I have a truck, it mostly sits waiting for me to need to pickup house fixings. I mostly drive old imported sporty cars that I get cheap and fix and a Buell anytime it's over 40 degrees outside. The current primary ride is a 94 Volvo 940 Turbo, the last a early eighties BMW 5 series. I can fit a pretty good, low profile selection of firepower in the cars not so much in the truck. Plus as an added benefit I get around 30mpg at 85mph in the cars and around 45 or 50 on the Buell.:)

dont own or drive a pickup... rather BMW M5, Lincoln continental, saturn station wagon :p :D :neener:
in the past, have owned grand nationals (3), grand prix's (2), Dodge Omni (loved that thing!), Olds Alero, BMW 525i... Would love to get my hands on a Crown Vic police interceptor @ local state auction in psring though! :p

Rifleman

Where are you racing at? I used to race a Superstock 3 shows a week in WISSOTA til I realized I couldn't actually afford it. Now I get my speed fix from the bike at trackdays every month or so. Much cheaper and almost as much fun. Unfortunately I can't even go watch at the local tracks without being twitchy for a week.

Yes, I have owned a pickup in the past but I currently ride a motorcycle as my main mode of transport. I occasionally drive my wife's car or my old van but I don't own a P/U currently.
