I am a pretty big revolver fan. Pretty much all I own. But, I am thinking it is time to get a semi-auto. I have had many in the past. I am considering the .45 adp round.

Right now the choices are:
Ruger P90. I had one once and it out shot my dad's Ed Brown. Dad made me sell it to him. Which was fine I was into IDPA and shooting Glock's 17 & 34.

Sprinfield XD/45. I do not know much about these. I heard they have a melonite finish Just like the S&W M&P? Is that true?

I keep hear jam-o-matic stoies about the S&W M&P. Not sure on getting one of these yet. Looking for this peice to be a self-defense conceal carry peice in winter under coat.

Sigs are great guns. But, I had a 228 rust and a 226 that had to be sent back to Exeter NH twice. Very frustrated with my expeience with sig.

I wish they made a 1911 that didn't jam. I use to own a kimber gold that I could not get to work well with any magazines. Do they have the magical non-jam magazines now? I heard if you get Wilson mags you can count on the gun? Besides every gun writer and self defense tactician seems to favor the 1911 style .45's. But, I think that is more a choice of the round.

Maybe the glock 21sf?

What do you think.

I will conceal carry this peice. But, most of the time it will sit in a car safe and be my range gun. Cleaning will be minimal after range sessions meaning no detailed stripping. This is why I am considering these choices:
Ruger P90
Springfeild XD/45
Glock 21 or 21sf.
I like the later choices. Especially Springfeild's new compact version. It seems you get 2 guns in one. But, not sure of their longevity???? any torture tests?

I'd say the ruger P-90. Most accurate .45 I've ever shot, and very reliable. Now that I've said that, I'll get out of the way for all the glock and xd fans.

I've owned 1911s, Glocks, H&Ks, CZ 97b, and and XD and they have all gone to the side line in favor of my Sig P220s. The P220 maintains a high level of accuracy which the polymer guns can't compete with, and reliability is on par with the best. If you are having trouble keeping the rust off your old Sigs, you need to work on your maintaining skills. I have carried Sigs on duty in the desert southwest, in the Montana winters, beach patrol on the coast, and now in the borderline rainforests of the Smoky Mountains. My Sigs still remain spotless from corrosion and/or rust. Sweat drips down on my sidearm often and gets in the action.....still no rust because I did my homework and found what works and what doesn't work to keep the rust off.

Try a Tuf-Cloth or some Tuf-Glide from Sentry Solutions. Its a dry lube that goes on wet and dries. There's a reason why Navy SEALs use this stuff on their hardware. It works, and it works well at lubercating and preventing rust while also preventing dust buildup.

That being said, I hope to try to get ahold of a M&P 45 and see how I like it. :)

My guess is that you outshot your dad, rather than your Ruger outshooting your dad's Ed Brown. ;)

By the way, there are plenty of 1911s that don't jam. The probability of jams is greatly reduced when it doesn't say "Kimber" on the gun.

you should look into the H&K USP 45

I Like Glock in 9mm Alot But When it Comes To Bigger Calibers I Like The Chambers To be A Bit More Supported.. And You Don't Get Better Support Than HK USP. Well XD comes Close.

If your going to carry get compact or sub compact.

I don't have any experience with Glock, XD, Sig, CZ or many other guns. I have a 90 year old 1911 that will shoot ball ammo all day long. Everytime I pick up my P90 I think it's too bulky and doesn't really fit me. But, when I shoot the P90 I'm reminded why I like it so much. It always works and with the Hogue grips it just settles into my hand like it belongs there. It's a great gun, especially for the money. It works and fits every bit as well as my Beretta 92.

My first .45 ACP was a Springfield Mil-Spec, and so far, so good. Factory ammo shot great right off the bat. I did have a little trouble when I started reloading for it, but I started casting bullets for it at the same time, so I expected some problems.

After I got all of the problems with the cast bullets and reloads addressed, it's been as reliable as the sunrise.

If I were you, I'd add it to the list of options.

I like the .45ACP, but the pistols are too big for pocket carry. My Kimber Ultra Carry and my Taurus MilPro PT-145 were nice pistols, and accurate, but TOO HEAVY. I'll wait for someone to make a 5-or 6 +1 DAO that weighs 15oz. (Is anyone from Kel-Tec listening?) to buy another .45ACP...

I will say this....if you buy a Springfield Armory 1911 and its a jam-o-matic, you can send it to them, they will work on it, ship it back to you, send a check for the cost of sending it to them, and it will NEVER jam again...even with factory magazines.

the exact reason i own 2 xds and i will buy many more sa products that includes 1911's in the future. they take care of the customer that is for sure.
sa has many 1911 options check out thier website
www.springfield-armory.com
check out the loaded models the operator and the TRP models they are all great 1911's that will serve you well.

the xd is a fine weapon i own 2 and love them mine are both 40 cal but the .45acp models are just as awesome.

i own a ruger p345 that is the most accuarte handgun that i have ever owned. you should check them out.

I know I'm gonna get called on this and possibly be crucified for the statement. I have a GI Colt made 1911 made in 1918 that has never jammed on me in 2,500 or so rounds, it's an Augusta Arsenal rebuild that is just sweet I won't mess with it. Can't say that for my Kimber, have had pretty good luck with Sistemas as well. If you shoot ball ammo out of a 1911 no problems some are a bit more finnicky with hollow point defense rounds. A good smith can fix the jam problems with a bit of polishing on the feedramp.

Another vote for the Ruger P90. A little bulky but with aftermarket grips it's very hard to beat (and much cheaper than most of the others mentioned).

A correctly dimensioned Government Model is no more subject to a failure than any other sidearm and in many cases very less likely to fail.

Thankyou for all the responses. I am learning a good deal here.

Glad to hear spingfeild stands behind their product.
Do the xd/45's have a special finish on the slide?

A good springfeild 1911.....hummmmm. That's an intriguing thought. Sounds like the Kimbers are notorious for their jamming? I do not have much experience with any other 1911's. But, it will be fed hollow points for a diet.

Doesn't mec-gar make 10 round magazines for the P90?

I did not out shoot my dad I outshot the ed brown as I was firing both. Off hand, no bench resting, at serveral distances. The P90 he has (I had) really is a tackdriver.

they have a melonite finish. i prefer the armory kote like i have on my xd service model but the melonite is better than the original finish that was on teh xds when they first came out.

no that is not the case at all i am just a loal sa fan they took care of me in the past and they stand behind thier products and thier customers. so i stay faitful to them as much as possible.

It's odd. You hear jam-o-matic stories about nearly every .45 ACP made, aside from revolvers. Does it have something to do with the taper of the round, since there seem to be fewer J.O.M. 9mms, or is it just perception? IOW, someone asks for a reliable 9mm. "Glock! CZ! FN! HK! Sig! Walther!" and many more.

Aside from the nostalgia of owning a 1911 (and the cartridge), I think the key value is the supposedly excellent way they fit your hand... I have heard that is the case for many people, doesn't seem to be the case for me. The 1911 may just not be a good fit your hand, for whatever reason: if you're outshooting a custom 1911 with a freakin' Ruger, you might be much better off with that Ruger. Or a Glock, since you seem to have some experience there.

Hand fit is a big thing for a carry gun. Takes less time to learn the gun if your hand fits it right, it points natural, and you can shoot it well. I think the XD has a similar grip profile to the 1911, so you'll probably want to shoot one before you buy one. As a matter of fact, you should have no trouble finding any of those guns at a rental range, where you'd have the opportunity of shooting each one to see how they work for you.

I have or have used extensively Ruger, Colt, Glock, SIG, H&K, and Taurus 45ACP semiautos. They are all good. You have to decide whether you want a SA, DA, or Glock type action and how much you want to spend. As long as you're buying a quality firearm spending more doesn't necessarily mean you're getting a better gun.

There are some people that just like to trash 1911s. 99.99% work flawlessly and hold up for 10's of thousands of rounds yet there is always the obligatory jamomatic posting followed by the me-tos. I suspect that half of the me-tos have never fired one. If you got the one in a thousand Kimber or Springer or Colt that doesn't work then get it fixed - its free. A 1911 isn't this weeks flavor of the month design and it doesn't take much to make them work perfectly. It's pretty much down to a science after nearly 100 years. Don't limp wrist it, feed it good ammo and use quality magazines and they just work.

I have 2 1911s and haven't had a failure to feed or any other malfunction in 20 years. I have 2 Wilson, over a dozen Chip McCormick and a Mec-Gar. All fine magazines. Generally I use the McCormicks.

BTW: They suck so bad that I'm buying a third next year for my birthday. ;)
