Do you like your .45 acp?

My two current .45 acp's are an XD and M&P. Love 'em both with no problems at all. I installed a set of TruGlo TFO's on the XD along with a hogue rubber grip and its my primary home defense pistol. Still waiting on Smith to release a bigger cap mag for the M&P .45 though:confused:

i thought i would hit this thread agin because i got another .45acp pistol today. a springfield mc operator and yes i like it i love it as a matter of fact.

I love my 5 inch XD in .45acp and at 13+1 it is a lotta fire power/fun
other .45 fave is my father's Sig P220 beautiful gun he has never had problems save with handloads.
and there is something very right about the 1911, John Moses would be proud to see how much it has devloped. I wanna SA 1911 someday.

The CZ-97B is my 1st choice for a 45 ACP but it's a bit heavy for carry. If you're already shooting Glocks then I think the Glock 21SF is an excellent choice. I also liked the Glock 36 I rented a lot, but I decided I prefer the CZ style guns C&Led and so I'm consolidating my automatics to that pattern.

I have a reliable 1911. But it's in 10mm and I've done extensive work to it myself to get it that way. I'd trust a gun that had been gone over by 1911Tuner, but I don't think he's in the biz anymore.

I am not bashing the 1911, just offering an opinion based on my experience. I have to say the 1911 platform is the most comfortable and ergonomic that I have ever shot. Once you learn the correct shooting technique, nothing else seems to fit quite as good.

I have only owned two, both Springfields and as much as I like them, they both are not reliable enough for me to carry. One I eventually sold after sending it to a reputable gunsmith twice for feed problems. The other went back to Springfield and while it is much better when they returned it, it still will not feed reliably.

Magazines - I've tried factory, mec-gar and chip McCormick.
Ammo - my own reloads and several varieties of factory ammo.
Shooter - granted the problem could be me, but I have no similar issues with any other semi-auto I own.

Do I think they could be made reliable? Absolutely. I have a problem with spending several hundred dollars for a quality hand gun only to have it 'tuned' to work as it should though.

My answer to that was the XD. I have a few XDs in .40 and recently added the XD compact in .45. The 1911 is still a more 'natural' feel to me, but the XD has proven super reliable.

love my 1911's. never had a problem feeding hollowpoints....but if you ask a glock fan I must be lying since no 1911 will feed hollowpoints

I own a SIG P220, SIG P245, XD45C, Ruger P97 and a Colt 1911.

Love the SIGs.

Love the XD45, one of the most versatile firearms I own.

Love the Ruger, although it is outclassed by the others but not by margin of price the others would have you believe.

The Colt is more of a nostalgic firearm for me. I like shooting it for fun every now and then but 1911s don't generally do it for me as far as any kind of defensive use goes. Just a personal opinion, not a dig against the design or those who prefer them.

I would personally go with the XD45C as it really offers the best of a lot of worlds for a fair price.....well "I" would go for a SIG P220 but "I" am a SIG guy but I digress.

My 1st. .45 ACP. was and still is a COLT officers enhanced stainless model that I bought in oakland CA. when I was stationed at N.A.S. Alameda CA. on board USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN CVN-72. It only failed to go into battery once the first time my wife shot it, not only did she limp wrist it, she almost dropped it:eek: I also have a SPRINGFEILD ARMORY Milspec,Micro-Copmact, & Trophy Match. none of these have ever jammed. All these guns were bought new. I also have a SIG/SAUER P-220 I bought used, and it has never jammed. I guess I'm just lucky.:)

I like the .45ACP, but the pistols are too big for pocket carry

I disagree to a point. Depends on the type of clothing you have on. If you are wearing loose/baggy pants - not a problem. Tight fitting clothes - you'll be painted. But this goes hand in hand with carrying anyhow - you have to find the clothes to fit the gun you decide to carry.

I carry mine as much as possible and have to vary my clothes towards my
PT145 and I've never had and issue.

Well, the .45ACP is an OK round. If it really has one major thing against it, it's that it's a large round that no longer fits any real gap between other rounds. One of the famous lines about the .40S&W is, "It has the accuracy of the 9mm and the stopping power of the .45ACP" while the 10mm Auto, which will fit in equal and even smaller magazines, is superior to the .45ACP in pretty much every way but has roughly the same kick.
Allot of people like the .45ACP just for it's style though. It IS a pretty nifty round.
The Ruger P-90 is actually a pretty decent gun. If you had one already, then no point in educating you about it unless you never fired it. The Springfield XD, I was a bit skeptical about this gun until I fired it. Now I can say that it's a good gun. Nothing terribly special, but it's a good gun. The same is true about every Springfield firearm I have ever fired.

I don't think there's many out there who thought of the .45ACP as an actual "Gap filler". More like the "standard by which others are judged maybe"

:)

I also will humbly disagree on recoil. The 10mm is roughly a bit more rough than the .45ACP. Ammo is also a little more expensive/less available isn't it? I'm asking because I don't own a 10mm and don't have to feed one on a regular basis.

I love my Glock 21, but that's because I own one. If I didn't own one, I'd have to go with my expierences. My cousin use to sell Glocks. He claims they are the best "out of the box" gun ever made. The range officer at my local range claims that "Glocks are not the prettiest gun, but the best gun for anyone who only plans on owning one gun." And then there are the shooting expierences. I've shot the Glock 21, 19, and 2 .45 Sigs (can't remember which ones). For some reason, the Sigs didn't like my hand...the fit was off. I had a real difficult time lining up with the target. From what I understand, the Sigs were "finer" quality guns than the Glocks, but hey, if they don't feel right, than they're not "finer" to me. The Glocks on the other hand feel good and get the job done every time (the 19 was a little small for my taste).

Anyway, the initial question was "Do you like your .45 ACP?" The answer, yes.

I think you should stay with the revolver , these 45acp's are evil and jam and do not shoot straight. Get a sp101 for carry.

Famine, I think your cousin owes you a commission after that post if he still sells them.

Ha:). No, he doesn't sell them anymore.

BTW, I've shot 2000+ rounds (I know it's not a lot, but I've only had the gun for a couple years) through my G21, ranging speeds from slow to fast to really fast, and I've never once had any jams or problems...and 1000+ rounds was Wolf ammo; you can't get any cheaper/crappy than that.

From what I know, people who buy Glocks buy them because they don't want to EVER worry about them. Heck, you don't even need to clean them. Toss it in the dish washer if you want.:D

Glock 21 is okay... Accuracy is good, but I find the grip angle to cause the bottom of my trigger finger to rub against the trigger well. Annoying. I'm selling mine.

I've got 2 1911's (Sig GSR Revolution and Charles Daly) and they truly are God's gift to man in the form of firearms, sent down from on high by his prophet, John Moses Browning. If you get one that is too "pimped out" (read: expensive and trendy) then they are not as reliable as a base model gun from one of the mainline manufacturers.

I've got an XD9, but not an XD45... the XD pattern doesn't have the glock trigger well bite that I dislike.

I've handled a Sig220 and didn't like it, since Sigs are notoriously not southpaw friendly. That dang de-cocker on the left side of the grip is a PITA for lefties. Were it on the opposite side (or were I right handed) it would be a good choice though. Felt good other than that.

Were I completely without a 45acp handgun and had to narrow down my choices to three different offerings, I would probably choose:
1. Springfield Mil-Spec (not GI, not Loaded... in between) 1911
2. Springfield XD45 compact
3. whatever else the gun shop had in 45acp, I don't really care. I'd favor some 1911 design under $800 first, then move to CZ, HK, Beretta, Glock, Sig, S&W, Ruger, Hi-point.

No experience here with CZ97's, HK's, EAA offerings, didn't like S&W autos at all, didn't like Ruger autos at all, Beretta offering, etc.

More correctly the 40S&W more or less fills a gap between the 9mm and the 45acp.

Courtesy DoubleTap Ammunition:
9mm - 147gr. +P Gold Dot JHP @ 1125fps; 14.00" penetration; .66" expanded diameter
40S&W - 180gr. Gold Dot JHP @ 1100fps; 14.75" penetration; .68" expanded diameter
10mm - 180gr Gold Dot JHP @ 1300fps; 15.25" penetration; .96" expanded diameter
45acp - 230gr Gold Dot JHP @ 1010fps; 15.25" penetration; .95" expanded diameter

while the 10mm Auto, which will fit in equal and even smaller magazines, is superior to the .45ACP in pretty much every way but has roughly the same kick.
I don't see a ton of 10mm superiority in humans. In fact it relies on expansion (never 100% reliable) to equal the 45acp. Don't get me wrong, I like 10mm. In fact I wouldn't mind owning a 10mm. It's a fine performer. With the proper bullet it's probably the best round in a normal size/weight autoloading pistol for dangerous 4 legged critters. But the numbers don't lie.

Another vote for the HK USPC 45. It has proven to be very reliable, easy to shoot and relatively easy to CCW. The P220 has been an equally good performer for me, but I find the HK easier to carry. I also carry a Colt Defender routinely but it can be a handful with +P loads.

I've had my p90 for 13 years. It's the only pistol I have that has never jammed in any way. I can't even say that about my glock19.

The p90 was my first pistol and it aint for sale!! It's the one I reach for when something goes bump in the night. My wife calls it her gun... I guess that means I need another..

Oh and as you know they shoot like target pistols.

I agree not of my 1911 are Jam a matics. I had a para that was but its not really a 1911. If their a problem Colt, Kimber, Springfield ,S&W, will fix it. Para tried to fix mine They got it better but still wasn't relieable as a carry gun. I traded for a Colt at a big loss.
