Grab a Gun and run- what are you taking?

Evidently you missed the previous post this was referring to? It was about a minimum arsenal from 22luvr.

My son and I have discussed at-length what constitutes a basic home arsenal. Purpose? The possibility of civil unrest, anarchy, breakdown in the vital infrastructure (water, gas, electricity, food, etc)

Then from 2dogs
Alright, all of this talk about your arsenal is well and good if you are going to hole up- and if that is the case then you've got 1,000 different guns and 9 million rounds of ammo to defend the castle with.
Now you are flushed out, seconds only to grab one gun and some ammo and hit the road.
What do you take?

So, there's the scenario!

You know, this is just a pretend question anyway.

Flushed out of my apt due to a flood, I had already strapped on the Colt Combat Commander I CCW.

When flushed out of apt years later due to a tornado, again a 1911 was already on person.

Normal carry is a 1911 style--P-11 is BUG or primary on class days...therefore I'd have one or both...if flushed -again.

I see this as a being flushed by home invaders kinda thing. So I'd grab what sits next to the bed, a Rem 870 with 20" IC bore and a couple boxes of 00 Buck. I naturally forget to grab the loaded S&W 629 that's in the bag with the 00 Buck

My Oly Arms 20" A2 AR15. The only one I have shot enough to trust, I dont get to the range very often.

Firstthing out the door the 639 and all 4 mags go with me

If time allows the 2 boxes of federal 115 HP's in the nightstand go as well. If I have time to grab a long gun its a tossup between the shotgun. 10/22 and the marlin lever 357. ( I want a 9mm carbine for just this reason, as well as ammo compatability for plinking and general shooting as nines are mucho cheap to buy these days)

As for 1 gun for hunting small game or big? or birds?
Different gun for each
Birds: 12 gage double.
Big Game: Ruger # 1 in 45/70
Small Game: Remington 581 scoped

Hunting handguns:
Birds: Ruger mark I target
Big Game: T/C Contender in 375 JDJ caliber.
Small Game: T/C Contender with either .22 LR barrel or 410 barrel

I'd grab whatever was close at hand and ready.

Most of my longguns are kept in a storage unit away from home so I guess it would probably be my Marlin Model 60. I wouldn't have a problem w/ .22lr but I probably would prefer something quicker than the tube mag. I'll be bringing the SKS into the house as well and that w/ some stripper clips would be fine. In both cases I can think of others that may be more ideal but either would be more than fine.

For handguns, I guess whichever came to hand first or whichever I had set up for home defense at the time. Probably my S&W 65LS, 6" S&W 586, CZ 75B or Charles Daly 1911 (they alternate HD duties, though it is usually the 65LS). I'd probably take an extra moment to set up my Bersa Thunder to drop in my front pocket as backup. I'd be perfectly happy with any of them.

Then again, if I was in a hurry why would I pick and choose. How about taking the one set up for HD (one of the above) plus one of the two bags I always have ready (between the two they hold all my handguns except the blackpowder revolver and the 6" S&W 586 since one is not very usable for anything but recreation and the other is too big, the bags hold ammo for the guns in them, holsters, and cleaning supplies).

I understand that the scenario wants only one, but why would I want to take extra time to drop to one when it would take less time for me to grab a bag full of guns and supplies?

(I guess that means I'd go w/ the handguns over the long guns, unless the situation that caused me to run clearly called for a long gun)

I don't understand you people that are taking long guns. We do live in a civilized soceity and walking around with a full sized assult rifle and 20 mags of ammo just might not be the smartest thing to do. You will probably be stopped or arrested by the cops before you ever have to defend yourself.

Grab a pistol that you can conceal and then you can have it one you at all times. I doubt anyone would take a shotgun or an AR-15 into a gas station to ask directions or grab it everytime you leave the car.

Most likely, you all you have is a long gun, you won't have it in your hands when you really need it. If you keep it in the trunk, why bother even having it? I am just thinking about the situations that I can remember where a gun was needed, L.A. riots for example. If you were caught in the middle of that and pulled out of your car, you wouldn't have time to go to the trunk and grab your long guns. You would look like Reginald Denny and I would look like those Korean store owners that were busting caps and no one was messing with. :D I think they had hi cap 9mm also. Smart!

I'd take the gun I'm most familiar with and shoot most often: my 10/22 with its 30-round mag (I lost the 10-round mag a long time ago). I think it would serve me best because its the one gun I've been shooting for years and don't have to think about, it's trouble-free, and plenty accurate even when I'm being hasty. It will take down any game around here except bear, and will stop most people (if I can hit a running squirrel, I can make a head shot just as easily). Plus, it's quiet.

firestar- 2dogs never stated why we were being flushed out. Tamara has made a valiant effort in trying to find out though! I just assumed widespread public panic due to a natural disaster, power outage or attack. In that case, I'm bringing my long gun and going WAY out into the country.

The one closest to me at the time.

If this is a situation where I will be on my own for a while, I will use it to get whatever else I need.

2dogs, "Grab a gun and run-what are you taking."? If you ever see me running with guns, it's to late for you! You don't have any left.:D

Colt's M4.

Firestar, there is no law in Texas that prohibits me from openly carrying a loaded rifle down the sidewalk, even in downtown Houston.
