I have noticed that many people here seem to use Linux, read slashdot ext. Is this because gun people tend to like computers or this is just the gun/geek population of all the gun people? Because this is a web forum then it is more likly gun geeks would find it.

Side Note:
Running Slackware 9.1 with Enlightenment

More of a dork than a geek, myself. Don't read Slashdot and will never use Linux. :neener:

Just some random thoughts...

One, it's logical that we'd have a higher number of geeks here than non-geeks. This is a web forum after all. However, Internet/web access has become so prolific now vs 10 years ago that there's also a fairly high number of non-gun geeks.

What I have noticed is that the number of obvious geeks tend to run your Linux and BSD variants on this board. I'm not sure if this is because the "geekiness" of such people jumps out easier or if it's just becaue the freedom lovin' gun-toting geeks out there also love the "freedom" of Free Software. I'm certainly a member of that camp.

I'm also inclined to beleive that the geeks are gun friendly in general. Sure, you still have your sheeple, but in the workplace I've found that while many aren't pro-gun they're not anti-gun either.
Given that we're a high target for "thought crimes" there's a high level if disgust with the federal government and regulations in general. Highly Libertarian (compared to other demographics) simply because of this. Well, that and our natural inclination to "think outside the box" and draw our own conclusions. We work with systems all day where we create our own models and set our own parameters for how things are going to happen. It's natural that we think our government is malleable. To us, everything is malleable.

Regarding the "thought crimes": For those of you not up to speed on such things there are many cases of people being tossed into the courts for things that they've done with their fingers. I don't mean actively cracking security and getting into somebody else's network -- simply creating a tool to do such things for educational purposes will bring the same treatment. Publishing software to read a DVD is also very shakey ground. It's true. Everytime I pop a DVD I own into the computer that I own and actually watch it I'm using software that's considered illegal. You can be busted for opening your mouth and describing mechanisms one could use to break "encryption" algorithms.

It's no wonder we geeks want to be armed.

Yep, guns can be used to wreak havoc. Software can wreak "havoc" also. I think at some point a light goes off in a geeks head and they realize that just like software a gun is just a tool. How you use it is what makes it good or bad.

Besides, the skills we've honed online in the 'vi vs. Emacs' wars carry over quite well to the 9mm vs .45ACP discussions. :D

Edit: Posted with Mozilla Firebird on a Debian GNU/Linux machine :)

WOW....deep thoughts...

Patting yourself on the back a bit are you? LOL

I've met plenty of Linux-lovers that have an aversion to firearms. Many people that dislike government prosceutions for Napster are quite unconcered about people being put in jail for having a shotgun barrel half an inch too short.

I'll give you this, though, you folks generally aren't as obnoxious as the Mac people. :neener:

This is a web-based forum. I'd say that kinda raises the odds of members knowing at least something about computers.

Computer Geek - Gun Guy checking in.

My website is running on a linux mandrake box running Apache under the Black Box environment. It's sitting about a foot to my left.

On the right is my Windows box for games. It has the good monitor, so I surf with it too.

I work IT for a living. Well, as long as I can put up with stupid users and outsourcing to India that is... :(

edited to add: Oh, and PA Rules!

Compare the number of personal pro-gun activist websites with the number of antis.

:D

And a lot of the "personal anti sites" are so slickly produced, one can't help wonder if there's a big money source behind 'em...

"Our side" has also been on the net a lot longer...when I first started looking circa 1997/8, there wasn't squat in the way of grabber websites, not even HCI/MMM/etc let alone solo activists.

It's a completely self-compiled LFS w/ KDE system for me.

Used to read Slashdot and K5 and similar ilk, but have devloped an extreme aversion towards "tech culture" as of late.

Well when the SHTF and there is no electricity,

I'll still be running my barebones Colt SemiAuto45 v3.2 using the Mec-Gar & Metal-Form 8X high speed detachable media input devices.

It's a small single user wireless system but it really let's you reach out and touch someone.

I think having to turn over credit card info to an ISP keeps the tinfoil-hat types tucked safely in their 12x8 plywood shacks... :neener:

my partner is a MSCE -Windoze type, but I a run BSD - Mac OSX on a G4 that is
Gotta question for ya. How do you feel about having to pay for security updates to that OSX that us Windoze(sic) users get for free?

umm, any OSX security update has been free

any new issue of the OS costs ~129 bucks

unless yer a BitTorent surfer
;)

Besides that, last time i checked the mac OS was a bit more buttoned up than M$Xp

IMHO Panther rocks, the Quartz screen rendering engine makes the UI quite slick
and the protected multitasking means i can run a 10 minute process and post here while it is working.

Maybe i will install GIMP under X11 and crush pixels the hard way,
but that would be kinda like shooting snakeshot out of an Anschutz.

:D

Harry,
Thx. I'm (obviously) not a Mac person. We do have a few Macs that we support where I work. I'd been lead to believe (by other Mac users) that OS X had a number of security issues, which were adddressed en mass by upgrading the OS rather than via patches.

Besides that, last time i checked the mac OS was a bit more buttoned up than M$Xp
Apples to horses. If Mac had 90% of the market (or Linux or anyone else for that matter) the shoe would be on the other foot.

I'm rooting (so to speak) for Linux, but I've tried it fairly recently (Mandrake 9.1) and found it to be too much of a pain in the butt. Especially for video editing. There is more and better software available for mastering DVDs on the Windows platform. What software there is for Linux I just could not get to work, so I gave up. I'll likely try again in a year or so to see if things have gotten any easier.

I get to play with all sorts of tech at work, but at home I just want it to work with as little effort as possible. The less time I spend futzing with my computers, the more time I can spend at the range!

Currently running SuSE 9.0 Professional on my desktop with KDE and using Mozilla 1.5 for browsing, mail and web page writing. I also run a mail server on e-Smith SMES Linux 5.5. I started putzing around with Linux in 1998, using Slackware and Red Hat. I've been and off-and-on user of these distros ever since. I also ran FreeBSD 5.1 for a couple of months but my hardware is better supported by Linux, hence the move back to the Penguin.

While not all techies are gun people, a lot of them are, in my experience. My department at work has a bunch of gunnies in it.

All Mac OSX updates are free (and automatic, if you enable the Software Update function.) Major OS revisions are $129 - just like Windows.

The only real Mac vulnerabilities are MS Office VBA script exploits - and since they can't be used to 'own' a Mac they're annoying at worst, not catastrophic.

On the Windows machines we support we have the AV virus definitions updated daily; on the Macs monthly is more than adequate.

Some of us just choose to use what works best. For me, Slackware is to computing what the 1911 is to handguns. Been using Slackware since 1995. When I have to run Windows, I do it in vmware.
