Family says man accused in mall shooting wanted to die
KINGSTON, N.Y. (AP) - According to his family, the 25-year-old man accused of shooting up an Ulster County shopping mall wanted to die but couldn't bring himself to take his own life.
Robert Bonelli Junior is charged with assault following the February 13th shooting spree inside Hudson Valley Mall, 55 miles south of Albany.
Police say Bonelli strode into the mall firing about 60 rounds, injuring two men and terrifying shoppers, before dropping his weapon and surrendering.
His father and uncle say he told them Sunday from jail that he had stood by the Hudson River hours before the incident and held the gun to his own head.
John Bonelli says his nephew didn't aim at any mall bystanders and expected to be shot dead by police, but they weren't there in time.
Robert Bonelli Senior says he feels "devastated" and guilty, that signs of his son's depression emerged when the boy was 12, he became overweight and withdrawn, counseling didn't produce results, and he needed serious intervention.
Says the father, quote-"I never could afford the help he needed."

Looks like it was a suicide by cops attempt...
