Hollow Point Controversy

....former representative gifford's appearance at the DNC convention this week was a very moving moment and also it was politically charged.

As you recall, she was shot once in the head with a 9mm by a gun-crazed madman..... and it is too bad she or others in the group had no way to defend themselves.

Anyway, it is a sad reminder that the caliber used in this terrible crime does have limitations.
A nuclear bomb has limitations.

I don't think she was tap dancing after she got shot either. anyway

Nine pages dancing around the basic truism that any pistol in a caliber you can practically gunfight with is going to generally be a subpar fight stopper. You can do yourself small favors or small harms by selecting better or worse bullets, but the real issue is having the mindset and skill to put them into a threat until that threat is neutralized. There is no such thing as a free lunch and with handguns/handgun caliber bullets there is no such thing as a guaranteed one-shot stop.

If any shooter who ever concerned themselves with whether their 175 grain Blastomatic Perp Hammer +P+ loads would get the job done spent all that navel gazing time instead at the range training they'd be much, much better off.

Caliber is open to interpretation how much more likely it is to stop the target. Penetration isn't*, and that's what the debate is here - how much penetration do you need on a handgun caliber to successfully stop a target.

*It is up to someone to determine what level of penetration is required, the FBI and a lot of folks say 12" minimum, the FBI and some others say 18" preferred. However, penetration has a much more tangible effect on "stopping power" (forgive the use of the term) than caliber. If it doesn't penetrate deep enough, it doesn't matter where you hit.
