Sorry, no pictures. My Remington 870 12g is a 1985 vintage blued 18" beaded with walnut furniture and sling. It has a 7 round extension and a 4 round sidesaddle loaded with OO Buck. For extra rounds I have a 50 round bandolier filled with OO Buck and 10 rounds of slug. Plenty of boxes of 12g on hand besides.

This is a 1977 manufacture 870 Police. It does not say police on it but Remington says it is a Police model from the serial #. Mt father-in-law purchased it new (it appears) in Miami in 1981 as they were cruising on a sailboat and piracy of cruising boats was becoming a routine occurance in the Caribbean, with little action by local authorities to stop it. The entire family practiced loading and firing at floating bottles. They had over 100 rounds or Remington 00 Buck on board.

The Police model seems to have changed from time to time. This one has a stock that is 12" long (wood) plus a 1" thick pad for a total of 13". The forend wood is 7.25" long or so - I don't know if that is typical of a standard or cut-down forend used on the newer police models.

The barrel is a 20" Improved Cylinder Remington with a bead front sight. It's marked for 2 3/4" shells. Could this shotgun fire 3" shells with a different barrel?

Modifications: none. It doesn't really need any. I'm going to get one of those Mossberg locking wall stands that go in a closet, and buy a left-hand safety trigger group as both my wife and I are left-handed.

For me, practical. 870 Super Mag (was on sale) with an 18" Remington police barrel, matching heatguard with ghostring sights, sling, buttstock shellholder, and a Streamlight M3.

And yes, the original wood stock. I like it, and I don't care to punch my own teeth out in a high-stress situation with a pistol grip.

All that stuff on Ringer's gun (pg. 1) sure makes it look mean........Wow!!!! They all look intimidating, though.

If you're used to a stock, and inadvertently bring a stockless shotgun up near the same position in a high-stress situation, where's it going to go with the recoil? I can count on my aim, but in that sort of situation, I'm not about to pretend that I might not slip into familiar habits.

Some people imagine themselves to be rehearsed action-movie stars. (which can be fatal, when the sh*t actually does hit the fan sometime and they learn that life isn't at all like that.) I don't. :D

Not just me, either. Searching for similar idea, "Guns" magazine, April 2005, article on HD shotguns:

"Put a stock on the shotgun and mount it to your shoulder and aim. The pistol grip things sans a shoulder stock are goofy. I have seen more than one guy bash his teeth out holding the stockless gun up near their face while shooting. Recoil, don't you know."

oh, ok sorry. You meant pistol grip ONLY shotguns. I was a little confused on how one knocks his teeth out with a shotgun with a pistol grip on a full stock.

Yeah, pistol-grip only, I ought to have been more specific. :)

For someone to whack themselves with a pistol grip on a full stock, um..well..yeah...that'd be a special kind of person. :D

Pcf,
How do you like your Bushmaster? That looks like the model I am currently looking at. Where did you buy it and how much, probably $950?

It's a great rifle, nary a problem in 3000 rounds, but if I could buy again (hindsight's 20/20) I'd buy the 16" superlight. The superlight barrel seems to have about the same balance as the M4 profile. You get an extra inch and half of barrel, and a removeable flash hider. The Izzy flash hider sucks, it's timed so that one of the three slots on it is vertical, not great for night shooting, and its pinned and welded in place. The 14.5 inch barrel looks cool but it really limits options.

Re: 870 mkI

Is there any way to take any of the "basic" Remington 870 models and modify them/add parts to reach the 870 mkI specification/feature list? Because that thing looks the hotness.

making due with what I have

i see many 870's but where are the moss 500's ?

Here's my setup:

1) I do not have a camera

2) I built this setup for multipurpose (hunting, trap, skeet, HD)

3) I had to sell it to cover bills while layed off (2 weeks ago) :(

4) The shop still had it so I put it back on layaway. :neener:

5) What it is: Mossy 500 "Special Hunter" combo sold by Dunham's Sports~~
Mossy 500 w/ parkerized finish and black synthetic furniture; 12 guage; 5-shot tube; 28" two-bead choked barrel; 24" cantilever rifled slug barrel; scope, sling, shims, etc. :)

6) What I added: a used 24" smoothbore slug barrel (camo parkerized finish) w/ basic rifle sights for $35.00 :D

7) Why this combo: a) deer hunting with scoped slug barrel & sabot slugs; b) if the shotgun gets bumped or dropped, I consider the scope out of zero and switch to the smoothbore slug barrel & forster slugs; c) the choked barrel will handle trap, skeet, small game, and turkey hunting ;)

8) HD setup: 12 guage Mossy 500 w/ 24" smoothbore slug barrel that will handle anything I load her with (birdshot, turkey loads, buckshot, slugs) :p

9) current primary and BUG when the shotty makes it home in a few months: S&W 642 w/ Hornady 125gr XTP JHP's

10) one platform + several variations = making due with what I have :scrutiny:

Later!
