I share your observations regarding political discussion. In my teens and eary 20's I was a long haired, hippy freak (saw Hendrix, Beatles, etc. in concert) and was very active in the anti-war (Viet Nam) movement.
Then I grew up, married, had children and settled into a Corporate World that changed my perspective on a lot of things. Reality replaced idealism and I went along to get along...at first. My late 30's enabled a step back and view my version of the Big Picture..which consolidated many beliefs.
I was lucky enough to retire at 50 (wife as well) and find myself finally admitting to being an Independent. And it's great..as is intelligent political discussion! The ONLY difference, IMO, between Dems and 'Pubs is how they get your money!
