THE CHAIR IS AGAINST THE WALL
Just a couple of quick questions for everyone here.

Specifically, how did you find The High Road?

What was that first event that led you here, and why did you decide to stay?

I found THR after the hiatus of The Firing Line. I found that it filled the TFL void, and then some. Since then I come to THR often, TFL rarely.

Specifically, though, what draws you to THR over other forums? Why do prefer to spend time here vs. other places?

There are no wrong answers, I'm genuinely interested to find out what makes THR special.

I think it's because THR is better moderated than practically any other place I've been to. I've reached the age where I don't find flame wars or "urinating contests" very amusing, and I think the mods do a good job at keeping these to a minimum.

I ended up here after a google search for info on a marlin 39 looking for info before buying. Became a member of the 39 club (had some trouble with my NIB 39) and later of the 336 club.

Forums like this are not available in europe and they are a huge source of info.
Since I first became a member I search for info on every firearm I wanted to buy and I learned a lot about safety, stances, long range shooting (thanks Zack).
I truly enjoy the historic section to (beeing Belgian, you know)

Thanks for a great forum

Peter

Hi I'm docnyt. I'm from Alabama. I've been sober for...oops wrong intro.

Stumbled upon THR searching for gun websites. Also when researching individual firearms, this site kept popping up.

I've been online probably daily. I stayed because of the cleanly moderated forums, the excellent information and input from members.

found it when it was referenced in another forum stay because it makes me raise the level of my behavior.

Hello friends and neighbors // Google search lead me here.

I stay in hopes of increasing my knowledge and have yet to be disappointed.

On each topic there are knowledgable posts by certain members I tend to read first. There are also many surprise links and responses from infrequent posters making THR the great mixing pot it is.

I enjoy the sales area and have never had a problem with any purchase.

The S/T area seems to be the most contentious and rightly so as everyone has an opinion consernng "their" strategy.
It is harder to pick out the experienced posters here. Having credentials does not necessarily mean one has obtained experience. I try to stay open minded and pick up what I can.

Mostly I stay because very few folks complain about my spellin and grammer or poor quality pics.:D

I moved over when TFL closed, but was more active on Berettaforum & the ipsc global village. When political/ religious/ sexual attacks was banned/heavily moderated I saw that the signal to noise ratio in my area of interest (gun rights discussion) was vastly improved so I became a more regular visitor.
The vast majority of my postings are in the S&W DOB thread and in related threads in the firearms research sub forum. The majority of my personal reading / learning is in the legal and activism sub forums.
I guess I hang around because THR is heavily moderated and civil discourse is required. The service I offer in the DOB thread helps to draw new or occasional shooters into our wider community. The requirement for civil discourse means those new members don't get driven off. This suits me well.
Because it is a civil community, when I need to ask a question myself I can generally expect well thought out replies with a minimum of off topic replies, thread drift or personal insults.
I've seen upheaval at Glocktalk, TFL, Berettaforum, Canadiangunutz, Brian Enos forums & the Global Village when the basic requirement that people be civil to each other was ignored, often with senior posters being banned or quitting, to the detriment of all.
THR isn't perfect, but it does a pretty good job of maintaining 'the high road'. While it does and while I have something to contribute I will stick around.

I initially found THR through Google.

As I became more interested and active in gun-related stuff, I just signed up because I wanted a place to talk shop.

When Rich announced that he was closing TFL to concentrate on his business, there was this guy who said he was starting a sister forum called THR...

You asked.

Came upon THR while doing a Google search. I found the answers I needed and started to go through the rest of the forum and archives. (I was laid up for several months with an injury so I had a LOT of time.)

I liked the variety of subforums, the civility (sometimes enforced) on the forum, the humor in some of the replies and the incredible depth of knowledge and experience of the members and their generosity in sharing it. Aside from the Muzzleloading Forum, which has the same "feel" as THR, this has been the best of the gun forums. Also, I like being able to contribute when my limited experience can help.

Google brought me here. I was goolging something about CCW holsters for my M&P went looking and never left.

What keeps me here?
1. The depth and breadth of experience and expertise from the users on this site.

2. "THR way". The lack of BS, politics, etc that can plague a lot of boards. Don't get me wrong I am a member of a couple boards that allow it and I occasionally will partake in the political discussion but it is nice to have a refuge from it. The Mods may get crud about the way they do things but the end results are tough to argue with.

3. The people. In addition to #1 and #2, I find the guys and gals on here to be good folks. Most not having issues to repeat things for newer members who maybe are not as good at search or stuff like that. We also have a diversified list of opinions which can be annoying but also provides a great diversity in suggestions and feedback.

I found THR through Google while doing research on my first-ever gun purchase.

The community seemed to have a higher average quality of participant than many other forums, and was full of useful information from people who knew how to communicate.

Well, since you ask, it went something like this...

Google-welcome to THR
Google-welcome to THR
Google-welcome to THR
Google-welcome to THR

"Wait just one gosh darn second, i think i can eliminate a step in this process."

Then i found out that she had a good personality as well as a wealth of information, knew how to take care of herself, and provided me endless hours of entertainment and joy with only a little bit of mind-boggling frustration to counterbalance it.;)

How did I find it?

I Googled a couple of gun question and THR kept coming up with the best answers. (I never knew gun forums (forums period) existed)

Why did I stay?

THR was so polite and civil compared to other forums that came up, and it's about one of my two favorite subjects.

I came here, thanks to Google, because I was searching for input and perspective on a safe installation.

I've participated in quite a lot of forums over the years for a variety of hobbies I have. What I value in a forum is 1) volume of participation and 2) helpfulness of participants. I think THR is the best forum I've ever found in this regard. Additionally, I really enjoy some of the discussion topics that people throw out for the group. In addition to the normal, specific questions one finds like in all forums, I find a higher rate of people asking and bringing up more creative topics: "Shooting Related Name For A Puppy", "Specialist or Generalist", and "Aesthetics" come to mind as examples.

I have to say having a sticky titled "THR Courtesy" (or however it's titled) I found a bit intriguing when I first arrived. It made me wonder what I was getting into. But I definitely stick around and come back. The comments, insight and helpfulness are informative and entertaining.

I read an article in a sporting magazine about gun forums just prior to joining. My brother had mentioned that he visited some fishing forums and I should as well. The first forum I joined was (and is) an excellent Pennsylvania based outdoor forum. From there I heard about RFC, then THR and TFL and a few others followed over about a 6-month period.

Added: I much prefer the general gun and knife forums over the brand specific forums. I don't eat and sleep Colt, Smith & Wesson, or Ruger. I stay because I learn things here and sometimes I have something to share that might help or be of interest to someone. I tend to be a gun generalist with my primary focus being revolvers, rifles, and hunting in terms of the sub-forums. The forums help to relieve or satisfy the human social need in the area of firearms and firearm related topics in a world that became primarily urban for me with few outlets for discussion. I grew up in the country. I am intensely interested in politics, but have for the most part stopped political comments almost entirely. There are times when discussing crime related topics where socio-economic issues come up as well as what most people consider "politics".

The one topic that I have learned a lot about was EBRs. Honestly, I could never see the big attraction and why people buy more and more of them. EBR's are fascinating however as a group. With the EBR's, the 2A rights issue tends to come to the forefront and you have to decide which way you go with this issue. It is one thing to say something, but it is entirely another to actually believe it. The Jim Zumbo event was actually very positive for me in terms of learning and solidifying my views about these weapons.

I originally found this site by making google searches for firearm related questions. The THR kept popping up with the most direct answers. I veiwed forums as a guest and found it to be a great resource.

I joined the site after comparing it to some of the other sites on the interwebzs. The THR is full of folks that just enjoy shooting and hunting. Trolls are dealt with quickly and led away from the rest of us. The ratio of internet commandoes/SF operators to good ole boys is pretty realistic instead of sites like the snipers hide for instance.

All in all I have stayed around because I have learned a great deal of hopefully helped a few folks as well. I have dealt with some really great folks through buying and selling a few guns and various items. I don't always agree with the views of fellow members but hey who cares. I am sure some don't always agree with me. The mods can be heavy handed but do so for the greater good of this forum and it is appreaciated.

Googling around when I got into shooting. A lot of knowledgeable people here. I still frequent other forums more specific to the weapons I own.
